It is to the great credit of the national leadership over the years that no attempt has been made to destroy this national heritage. The goal has been instead to preserve its integrity and dignity while building on this strong foundation a lasting super-structure of national language and culture. The present book is one of many design- ed for this purpose. It recognizes the ped- agogical importance of dividing literacy and second-language learning into two steps -- literacy being the first. When a student has learned to read the language he under- stands best, the resulting satisfaction in his accomplishment gives the drive and con- fidence he needs to learn the national lang- uage. His ability to read, furthermore, is the indispensable tool for the study this program will require. The Ministry of Education and Culture of the Philippines is proud to present this latest volume in a nationwide series designed to teach the national language through lit- eracy in the vernaculars. So we count it a privelege to be able to live with the Bontoc Igorota, to learn their language, to eat their food, and to have in aome way their way of life. We are especially grateful to the people of barrio Tokokan, who have welcomed us into their midat, invited ue to eat in their homes, patiently taught ua aome of their language and culture, praised us when we have done right, and scolded ua when we have done wrong. For thia atory of hia experiences during the war we muat thank our good friend Lucio Manglen, a Bontoc man who has married a Tokokan woman. We truat that thia book will be enJoyed by those who read it, and will help MEC teachers in their worthy task of educating Bontoc children. Then they would return inside the Japanese garrison. They were hungry, because the Japanese did not feed them. The Americans who were being forced to work were a pitiful sight. We went every night to steal the Japanese supplies. The Japanese were fed up. One night, when only two of us went they found out.
