While these are too numerous to list (or even remember for that matter) in this instance, I would nonetheless like to acknowledge and thank everyone who has traversed my life path over the years, for without them I would not be who I am today. There are, however, a number of people who deserve singling out for special mention. Firstly I would like to thank Dr Malcolm Cathcart. It was Malcolm who suggested I embark on doctoral study and introduced me to the Professional Studies Program at the University of Southern Queensland. It was also Malcolm’s encouragement that “sold” me on my ability to undertake doctoral work.

With music festivals in particular, there is an additional emphasis on the chance to experience live music by often idolised musicians within a temporary community of shared musical interests. However, whilst a music festival may attract visitors through advertising an attractive and appealing line-up of popular acts, this far from guarantees a happy customer. There are many other elements that contribute to and impact upon the experience of the festival-goer (Morgan, 2008: 83). If these elements are managed well, this can result in benefits for both the consumer, through positive emotional and cognitive experiences, and for the organisation through repeat custom, recommendations and increased sales.

  • Thesis Mosh Pits and Mental Health: Metal Communities
THESIS MOSH PITS AND MENTAL HEALTH: METAL COMMUNITIES AND EMERGING ADULTS’ WELL-BEING Submitted by Evan Polzer Department of Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2017 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Jeff Snodgrass Katherine E. Browne Patrick Mahoney Copyright by Evan Polzer 2017 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT MOSH PITS AND MENTAL HEALTH: EMERGING ADULT WELL-BEING IN METAL COMMUNITIES In this thesis I will examine relationships between metal music and community participation and the mental well-being of so-called “emerging adults” within these communities. Building upon previous research on these relationships, I examine how emerging adult mental well-being is affected – both positively and negatively – by engagement and involvement in metal music communities. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, I employ ethnographic fieldwork, person-centered interviews, and survey methods to describe how not just metal music but other “ritual” activities of metal music culture enact euphoric and also sometimes potentially detrimental effects on the mental health of emerging adults within these communities. Through these methods, I aim to detail how in a paradoxical sense the chaos and aggression inherent in metal music can confer therapeutic calm to individuals through identification with the music, the group, and the performances conducted within these metal music communities. The introductory Chapter One will first serve to provide an overview of what is exactly meant when describing heavy metal music communities, as ambiguities exist not only in the common understanding of the subculture, but also in the academic literature. In addition to this, a brief history of metal music communities will be discussed, detailing public perceptions, stigmas, and moral panics associated with the music and its fans.

The event features many genres of music, including rock, indie, hip hop and electronic music as well as large sculptural art. The event has several stages-tents that have been constructed throughout the grounds, with each playing live music continuously for the duration of the festival. The main stages are: Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent, and the Sahara Tent (2006 and 2011 also saw the addition of a smaller Oasis Dome). The project Coachella organisers sought an access control solution that would prevent the re-sale of tickets, drastically reduce pass-backs and give event managers greater control over the admission of their guests. ID&C collaborated with RFID system provider Intellitix to offer Coachella a contactless access solution based around RFID-enabled wristbands. The wristbands contained microchips which linked to a database of ticket information, validating fans upon entry and replacing the need for paper-based tickets. The custom wristbands, coupled with an RFID SmartCard gave organisers with a robust solution which provided the desired level of admis- sion control, completely eradicated touting and dramatically reduced pass- backs. The product ID&C created a bespoke RFID tag that integrated with its popular festival RFID SmartCard wristband, creating the now commonly seen RFID cloth wristbands.

Seasoned Exodus The Exile Mosaic of Psyculture Feature Article Graham St John University of Queensland (Australia) Abstract Psychedelic trance music and culture (psyculture) is explored as a culture of exodus rooted in the seasonal dance party culture evolving in Goa, India, over the 1970s/1980s, and revealing a heterogeneous exile sensibility shaping Goa trance and psyculture from the 1990s/2000s. That is, diverse transgressive and transcendent expatriations would shape the music and aesthetics of Goa/psytrance. Thus, resisting circumscription under singular heuristic formulas, Goa trance and its progeny are shown to be internally diverse. This freak mosaic was seasoned by expatriates and bohemians in exile from many countries, experienced in world cosmopolitan conurbations, with the seasonal DJ-led trance dance culture of Goa absorbing innovations in EDM productions, performance and aesthetics throughout the 1980s before the Goa sound and subsequent festival culture emerged in the mid-1990s. Rooted in an experimental freak community host to the conscious realisation and ecstatic abandonment of the self, psyculture is heir to this diverse exile experience. Keywords: Goa trance, psytrance, psyculture, exodus, cultural exile, counterculture, festival Graham St John is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland. His book forthcoming with Equinox in 2012 is Global Tribe: Spirituality, Technology and Psytrance. Other recent books include Technomad: Global Raving Countercultures
