Historians actively participated in them. The theme Sources and People for several years remains at the point of their opinion intersection. Since 1997 the collected articles based on the papers presented have been published. All the materials of the Scientific Readings testify that some certain traditions have been formed in the workgroup of historians: the variety of approaches, pluralism of opinions and tolerance to different points of view. Papers are peer-reviewed. • The Holy See
The Holy See APOSTOLIC LETTER SESCENTESIMA ANNIVERSARIA OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF JOHN PAUL II ON THE OCCASION OF THE SIXTH CENTENARY OF THE "BAPTISM" OF LITHUANIA To my Venerable Brother Liudas Povilonis Apostolic Administrator of Kaunas and Vilkaviskis President of the Lithuanian Episcopal Conference and to the other Bishops of Lithuania 1. THE SIX HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY of the "Baptism" of our Nation, which you are solemnly celebrating in this year of grace, is for you and your people an occasion for the deepening of faith, of prayer and of spiritual renewal, in which the whole Church is united with intense and fraternal participation. As I have recalled in various circumstances - and most recently in my homily at the Mass on 1 January last - the whole Church commemorates with you this very significant anniversary and with you gives thanks "to God for his inexpressible gift" (2 Cor 9:15). The Church in Rome and all the sister Churches throughout the world join you in the fervent prayer of thanksgiving that you are raising to the Lord for the inestimable grace of the "Baptism", for the welcome which it met among your people and for the benefits which it brought them, and for the strength and fervour with which your fathers preserved it and developed it amid the vicissitudes of a history six centuries long. The universal Church is aware of and grateful for the great spiritual wealth which the Lithuanian Catholic community has brought and still brings to the ecclesial communion and recognizes in its centuries-old witness of fidelity to Christ tire action of the Holy Spirit, who "by the power of the Gospel makes the Church grow, perpetually renews her, and leads her to perfect union with her Spouse ".(1) 2 As you know, in order to manifest this universal communion with you, on 28 June next, simultaneously with the national celebration in Vilnius, I shall preside at the tomb of the Apostle Peter at a solemn concelebration, during which I shall have the joy of beatifying a great son and Pastor of your people, Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis.

[email protected] Ekonomikos istorija Straipsnyje* pateikiama TSRS bandymø perimti Lietuvos bankui priklausantá auksà ir sàskaitas uþsienio ðalyse 1940–1941 m. istorija. Atskleidþiama, kurie bankai sutiko tai padaryti, o kurie grieþtai pasiprieðino okupantø këslams perimti Lietuvai priklausantá turtà. Pateikiama smulki aukso kiekio ir lëðø, buvusiø uþsienio bankuose, apskaita ir uþsienio bankø sàraðai. Pagrindiniai þodþiai: nacionalizacija; litas; valiuta; auksas; Lietuvos bankas; TSRS valstybinis bankas. 04_reviews 30/3 6/6/00 10:27 am Page 443 Reviews Nazik Saba Yared, Arab Travellers and Western Civilization, London, Saqi books, 1996; ISBN 0–86356–336–8; £45.00 East may be East and West West, but the scholarly interest in inter- actions between the two has been profound. The burden of such studies has, however, tended to be lopsided and one-way. Works on Western approaches to the East, including the Middle East, are now legion. Surveys of Arab travellers to the West have been much less common, particularly when produced by non-European scholars. Those that do exist have dealt mainly with the medieval period or with political and religious attitudes. Nazik Saba Yared reveals much new material relating to nineteenth — and early twentieth — century travellers who dealt with economic, social, literary, scientific and technological aspects of the West. She divides her study into three chronological sections, 1826–82, 1882–1918 and 1918–38, and charts an interesting dynamic of changing attitudes and instrumental responses during these eras. The approach is highly schematic, but some intriguing results emerge. In the first period, her travellers were generally highly westernized and were sometimes Christian converts. Their principal concerns were often related to the introduction of the concepts of the French Revolution to the Middle East, including the debate about the appropriateness of slavery to a modern society. Inevitably, questions of nationalism, law and notions of absolute and unjust rule were prominent in their thinking. They accepted the Western idea that the original powerful dynamic of the Arab world had ebbed away and they tried hard to reconcile ideas of progress with this alleged passivity.

Belarusian Political Science Review, Volume 2, 2012–2013 ISSN 2029-8684 (online) ISSN 2029-8676 INSTITUTIONS AND COMMUNITIES: HISTORICAL DIMENSION Alieh Dziarnovič LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE IN THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA: BETWEEN FUNCTION AND STATUS Introduction, or the Incident of 1529 At the very beginning of May 1529, on behalf of the High Court – “by or- der of His Majesty” – offi cials of the central and regional (Vilnius/Wilno/Viĺnia Voivodeship) administration of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania sent decki1 Vasiĺ Bialianin to the Eišiškės parish of Lida County (today in the Šalčininkai district of Vilnius County of the Republic of Lithuania). He was to interview witnesses on the spot over a disputed property case between a boyar of His Majesty Piotr Sumarok and Eišiškės subject Sieńka Ivaškavič. The judicial body, headed by the Marshal2 of His Majesty Maciej Vojciechavič Kločka, “ordered Sumarok and Sieńka Ivaškavič not to go to those witnesses beforehand, but join the decki”. Sumarok asked permission not to join the decki, but to stay in Vilnius. What a surprise it was for the decki when he met Sumarok on the road to Eišiškės “al- ready going back from witnesses”. The court offi cial asked the plaintiff : «“Sumarok, where are the witnesses?”, – and he pointed out the witnesses in a birchwood. Then, when the witnesses stood in front of me and wanted to confess, Sumarok started talking to them in Lithuanian (emphasis mine. – A.Dz.) and asked them: “For God’s sake do not betray me, and what I promised I will give you, and will not betray you”».

Lietuvių katalikų mokslo akademijos metraštis. T. 30. Vilnius, 2007. Archivum Historicum Societatis Iesu vol. lxxxix, fasc. 177 (2020-I) Book Reviews Thomas M. McCoog, ed., With Eyes and Ears Open: The Role of Visitors in the Society of Jesus. Leiden-Boston: Brill, 2019. 315 pp. $179.00. ISBN 978-90-04-39484-1. This edited volume investigates an office of utmost importance in the Society of Jesus, which only recently became of interest for scholars: visitors (visitatores). As the volume’s editor Thomas M. McCoog SJ rightly observes, a particularly important stimulus to the field is Liam Brockey’s study of the life and works of André Palmeiro (1569—1635), one of the first and most influential visitors of Asia (The Visitor: Andre Palmeiro and the Jesuits in Asia (Cambridge, MA, 2014). This volume is different in that, rather than focusing on one individual, it considers several visitors throughout the history of the Society of Jesus, paying particular attention to the office itself from a theoretical and practical point of view. In 12 chapters, the authors (6 Jesuits and 6 lay scholars) follow the lives and work of different visitors and the historical figures closely related to them, from the early modern age until the twentieth century. In his thorough Introduction, McCoog points out how other religious orders employed visitors, but only in the Society of Jesus they became so important, and mainly for two reasons: “the centralized government of the Society, and its rapid expansion” (p. 1). Visitors were directly appointed by the superior general, “for difficult situations where a resolution has proved elusive” (p. 2). The “powers and nature” of their role were “defined according to the circumstances”, as Wiktor Gramatowski SJ explained in Glossario Gesuitico (p.

Peace and Security beyond Military Power: The League of Nations and the Polish-Lithuanian Dispute (1920-1923) Chiara Tessaris Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Chiara Tessaris All rights reserved ABSTRACT Peace and Security beyond Military Power: The League of Nations and the Polish- Lithuanian Dispute Chiara Tessaris Based on the case study of the mediation of the Polish-Lithuanian dispute from 1920 to 1923, this dissertation explores the League of Nations’ emergence as an agency of modern territorial and ethnic conflict resolution. It argues that in many respects, this organization departed from prewar traditional diplomacy to establish a new, broader concept of security. At first the league tried simply to contain the Polish-Lithuanian conflict by appointing a Military Commission to assist these nations in fixing a final border. But the occupation of Vilna by Polish troops in October 1920 exacerbated Polish-Lithuanian relations, turning the initial border dispute into an ideological conflict over the ethnically mixed region of Vilna, claimed by the Poles on ethnic grounds while the Lithuanians considered it the historical capital of the modern Lithuanian state. The occupation spurred the league to greater involvement via administration of a plebiscite to decide the fate of the disputed territories. When this strategy failed, Geneva resorted to negotiating the so-called Hymans Plan, which aimed to create a Lithuanian federal state and establish political and economic cooperation between Poland and Lithuania. This analysis of the league’s mediation of this dispute walks the reader through the league’s organization of the first international peacekeeping operation, its handling of the challenges of open diplomacy, and its efforts to fulfill its ambitious mandate not just to prevent war but also to uproot its socioeconomic and ethnic causes.
