BLESSED MARY, OUR QUEEN AND MOTHER – REFLECTION BY DEACON STEVE August sure is a busy month liturgically. The Church calendar is filled with all kinds of celebrations: On top of a slew of optional memorials we have a solemnity (the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), three feast days (the Transfiguration of the Lord, St. Lawrence, deacon and martyr and St. Bartholomew, apostle) as well as ten obligatory memorials (Saints Alphonsus Liguori, John Vianney, Dominic, Clare, Maximilian Kolbe, Bernard, Pius X, Monica and Augustine) with all these celebrations being capped off with the Passion of St. John the Baptist. But there’s one day this month that is special to all our hearts and that is the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary coming up on Saturday, August 22nd. How fortunate we are to belong to a parish family that honors our mother Mary as royalty. Mary’s title as queen is rooted biblically in the A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman Book of Revelation where she appears in a mysterious vision to St. John clothed with the sun, with the moon under her as “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. on her head a crown of twelve stars.” A worldly perspective, too, adds Revelation 12:1 to the validation of Mary’s title. Since Jesus is a king, and since He was conceived in the womb of Mary, and since in ancient Israel the mother of a king was always His queen, Mary becomes a queen. It is not royal blood, however, but her motherly relationship to our Lord that makes Mary a monarch in the Kingdom of God both here on earth as well as in heaven. Thus, it is important to understand that Mary’s title of “queen” is not meant to show power over others, but rather to underscore her relationship to Christ. In 1954, in establishing the feast day of the Queenship of Mary, Pope Pius XII affirmed this relational tradition in his encyclical when he wrote, “According to ancient tradition and the sacred liturgy the main principle on which the royal dignity of Mary rests is without doubt her Divine Motherhood.” The Pope further explains that Mary also merits the honor of the title because she played such an important role in bringing Christ the Redeemer into the world. “Certainly, in the full and strict meaning of the term, only Jesus Christ, the God-Man, is King; but Mary, too, as Mother of the divine Christ, as His associate in the redemption, in His struggle with His enemies and His final victory over them, has a share, though in a limited and analogous way, in His royal dignity.” So, how blessed we are! Since Mary was the instrument through which God entered our world, she is also the instrument through which all graces flow. In other words, Mary’s selfless act of loving involvement in the Incarnation was not just some historical event that took place two-thousand years ago. Rather, her motherhood along with her related queenship are continuous and eternal gifts to all the faithful. God certainly is the source of grace, but Mary is the instrument. As members of a community dedicated to Mary as queen/mother, it is our privilege and call to acknowledge her role in the Kingdom as glorious and essential and to accept in our hearts her standing as our Queen and our Mother. Along with our Holy Mother Mary, may God always be in the midst of your heart! Deacon Steve

BAPTISM CLASSES The Diocese of Cleveland requires that parents of children to be baptized receive instruction regarding the nature of the Sacrament and what role they, as first instructors in the faith for their children, will play in their child’s faith formation. Normally our parish offers quarterly in- person classroom instructions to meet this requirement. Due to the meeting restrictions that we’re following, these classes have been temporarily halted. If you are planning to have your child baptized between now and the end of the year and have not attended one of the instruction classes in the past five years please contact Deacon Steve at [email protected] or the parish office [email protected] to make other arrangements. Thank you, Deacon Steve.

NOVENA FOR OUR NATION: A BATTLE FOR THE SOUL OF OUR NATION AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH August 15 to October 7, 2020 The Novena will begin on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and will end on October 7th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. We will have two intentions: to pray for the restoration of the faith in the United States, and to pray for the universal Church as the Amazon Synod approaches. In the United States, we continue to live in peace-less times with laws and court rulings in conflict with God’s laws; especially the disregard for the rights of the unborn, elderly and weak in our society and the attacks on marriage and family values. We now need to implore graces from Almighty God, to lead the Pope and the Bishops to follow sound doctrine and tradition, and firmly reject modernist interpretations of the priesthood, religion, and inculturation. For more information goto: https:// rosarycoasttocoast.com/54-day-rosary-novena.
