By Lucas Tappan, Director of Liturgy and Music Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Topeka, KS My otherwise phenomenal professors in graduate school did me a grave injustice by failing to mention that as a professional church musician I would not only need to be a serviceable organist, conductor and vocal coach, but additionally, I would have to possess all of the knowledge and traits of the best sports psychologists, teachers, parents, communicators, disciplinarians, financial officers and... FUNDRAISERS! It is possible that I would rather have labored my life away on a Roman galley ship than to have been placed in charge of fundraising for any institution. However, the Lord is full of surprises. In May of 2014, the Foundation for the Sacred Arts and Music invited our choristers (Most Pure Heart of Mary Schola Cantorum) to go on pilgrimage to Rome. Not one to be bothered by details, I readily accepted the invitation before giving a thought to how the choir would pay for it. By the Grace of God we made it happen. I still don't qualify as a specialist in the field, nevertheless, I offer the following suggestions to my fellow musicians in hopes that someone, somewhere, toiling and struggling to raise more money than his house is worth, might find in them a ray of hope. Prayer: However cliche it might sound for the Catholic musician to give a perfunctory nod to the necessity of prayer, I cannot stress enough how important prayer is to your cause. I was faced with the task of getting 43 choristers to Rome, most of whom needed serious financial help, and for a year-and- a-half my daily Rosary intention was for the success of raising the necessary funds. -

Prayers of Consecration 6-19-20
Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us, humbly prostrate before your altar. We are yours and yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united with You, behold each one of us freely consecrates our self to your Most Sacred Heart. Many, indeed, have never known you, many too, despising your precepts, have rejected you. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to your Sacred Heart. Be You King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken you, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned you; grant that they may quickly return to their father’s house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger. Be You King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbour of truth and unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd. Be You King of all those who are still involved in the darkness of idolatry, and refuse not to draw them into the light and kingdom of God. Grant, O Lord, to your Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give peace and order to all nations, and make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to it be glory and honour forever. Amen. - Adapted from the Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Pope Leo XIII (cf. -
Sacred Heart – Immaculate Heart”
FATHER MARK SCHULTE HOMILY Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) June 13, 2021 “Sacred Heart – Immaculate Heart” In recent days, the Church has celebrated two very important Feast days, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We know that the heart is the seat of love. When you give someone your heart you give them your love, you give them the most intimate and sacred part of you. For Jesus, his greatest act of love was His passion and death for us. As He hung on the cross, the soldier’s lance pierced His side and into His heart and out flowed blood and water. The water to cleanse us of sin in baptism and His blood to nourish us sacramentally. For these and other reasons, the church and the faithful venerate the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the very heart of God (CCC 478, 694, 1225) (Jn 19:34). Closely associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the Immaculate Heart of His Mother Mary. The flesh of the heart of Jesus comes from her flesh. The suffering of Mary is intimately related to the suffering of Jesus. The prophecy of Simeon is fulfilled in her suffering. He said: “A sword will pierce your heart”. Her sword of suffering is her sorrow, in witnessing the suffering of her son Jesus. She contemplated from early on that the life of her son would consist in suffering for His people (Lk 2:22-39, 51). Mary united her intense suffering with the suffering of her Son Jesus. -
I ABSTRACT FOLLOWING OUR RABBI: DISCOVERING AN
i ABSTRACT FOLLOWING OUR RABBI: DISCOVERING AN APPRENTICE MODEL OF DISCIPLESHIP by Judith L. Ransbottom-Stallons What happens when we forget how to follow our Rabbi? We lose our direction and look for something or someone else to follow: a charismatic leader, the latest trend, the most popular text. When none of it works, we are left scratching our heads and wordlessly wondering what it is we are doing wrong. It is the quandary of the 21st century church, and for the purposes of this paper, The United Methodist Church in the Kentucky Annual Conference. Some churches grow no matter what. Some churches close no matter what. Yet, the possibilities for substantive growth may have measurable potential if every church restored what it means to follow our Rabbi. In the case of Christendom, our Rabbi is Jesus the Christ. We keep reading more books and attending more seminars, yet it does not seem to catch fire the way we imagined it would. Church membership dwindles, baptisms and professions of faith are sometimes rare occurrences, so we are missing something. Through the distribution of surveys to pastors within the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church who have utilized either Spiritual Leadership Inc. or 3DM as their top choice for renewing church vitality and what it means to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world,” this dissertation seeks to rediscover what it looks like to follow our Rabbi Jesus and what we ii are missing that keeps us from fully realizing our mission statement and our Commission from Christ. -

It is a consequence of that boundless love of Jesus for His most Holy Mother, which leads him to share with her all the riches and honours, so far as they can be communicated to a person. • St. Luke wrote: “But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.” “And His mother kept all these words in her heart.” (Luke 2, 19, 51) •Towards the end of XI century, indications of a regular devo- tion to the Heart of Mary are perceived in a sermon by St. -
Justice Loreto Schools Australia
Justice Loreto Schools Australia Seek truth ... do justice. Loreto is committed to a shared mission to transform the Church and the world particularly by empowering women to seek truth and do justice. LORETO SISTERS AUSTRALIA & SOUTH EAST ASIA MISSION STATEMENT INTRODUCTION Across this week our land and Church are marking the tenth anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, Chinese New Year, Tet and the beginning of Lent. Major investigations are underway into the banks and the wealth of the Catholic Church in Australia. Pancakes are being sold in schools, Project Compassion boxes are being distributed and the week ends with a webinar introducing the IBVM/CJ international family to the workings of Mary Ward people at the United Nations as we attempt to address the Sustainable Development Goals platform. In a nutshell, the week holds out to us the many challenges facing our land and Church at this time. Our Loreto schools are gifted with a framework and tools for educating for justice in our desire to follow Jesus, the signposts provided by Mary Ward and her followers across the centuries, Principles of Catholic Social Teaching, Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statements, the Calls of the 2014 General Congregation, the Compass produced by the 2017 Loreto Education Conference in South Africa, Towards Global Citizenship material from the IBVM desk at the UN and invitations from Mary Ward International Australia to work in solidarity with women and men in our region seeking justice for their children and their communities. This small Resource Booklet is a simple springboard into some reflection on this Mary Ward virtue; a virtue that is unsettling, multivalent and challenging. -
Dominican Devotion to the Sacred Heart
DOMINICAN DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART LOUIS EVERY, O.P. HE HEART of Christ is the living and expressive symbol of divine and human love for all mankind. This Heart was closed before the Passion, because it was unknown, but after the Passion it was opened so that holy souls might see that all the prophecies were fulfilled. It is true that in the Middle Ages great stress was placed upon the devotion to the Wounds of the Sav iour without specific reference to His Sacred Heart, yet there were many devout persons in the Order of Preachers who penetrated more deeply into those Wounds and discovered in the Pierced Heart, the emblem of love and the door that opens to eternal salvation. GERMANY The earliest account of devotion to the Sacred Heart in the Do minican Order is found in The Light of Divinity, a small book, con taining the visions of a pious woman, Mechtilde ( + 1250), written at the request of her spiritual director, a Dominican friar from the con vent of Magdeburg. She relates that on one occasion Our Lord ap peared to her and said : "In the Order of Preachers there are two things, i.e., the cult shown and the great fruit derived which I esteem so highly that I always smile from the depths of My Sacred Heart; for both men and women with all the power at their command zeal ously preach the glory of My Majesty."1 Mechtilde always prayed that the Dominicans by their labors would continue to make repara tion for the insults directed against the Sacred Heart. -
