The fire spotted into the community but was quickly extinguished by crews in place to provide structure defense. The presence of these fire crews along with air support kept the fire on the east side of the Hwy. USDA Forest Service officials on the San Bernardino National Forest have confirmed the death of a firefighter on the El Dorado Fire. The incident took place on Thursday, September 17, 2020. The name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time. More details will be made available as they are confirmed. The fire continues to impact the communities of Angelus Oaks, Mountain Home Village, Forest Falls, and threatens the areas of Glen Martin School, San Bernardino Peak, Anderson Peak, Pinezanita, Horse Flats, Barton Flats, Anderson Peak, and Heart Bar. -

Smoke from the blaze, dubbed the El Dorado Fire, could be seen across the desert. Evacuation orders were issued for some residents in the communities of Oak Glen, Forest Falls and Mountain Home Village — a trio of towns clustered near the base of San Gorgonio Mountain. Some residents in eastern Yucaipa, a city about 20 miles southeast of San Bernardino, also were ordered to evacuate, while others remained under evacuation warning. By Saturday night, some evacuation orders were lifted Oak Glen residents who live east of Pine Bench Road are allowed to return home, according to Cal Fire. About 30 homes, primarily located in Oak Glen, were threatened Saturday, but San Bernardino County Fire Chief Dan Munsey said only one outbuilding was destroyed. Cal Fire San Bernardino Chief Shane Littlefield said 450 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was 5% contained as of 9 p.m. Saturday. -

Fires affect animals mainly through effects on their habitat. Fires often cause short-term increases in wildlife foods that contribute to increases in populations of some animals. These increases are moderated by the animals’ ability to thrive in the altered, often simplified, structure of the postfire environment. The extent of fire effects on animal communities generally depends on the extent of change in habitat structure and species composition caused by fire. Stand-replacement fires usually cause greater changes in the faunal communities of forests than in those of grasslands. Within forests, stand- replacement fires usually alter the animal community more dramatically than understory fires. Animal species are adapted to survive the pattern of fire frequency, season, size, severity, and uniformity that characterized their habitat in presettlement times. When fire frequency increases or decreases substantially or fire severity changes from presettlement patterns, habitat for many animal species declines. A wildfire is an uncontrolled fire spreading through vegetative fuel often consuming structures and wildlife in its path. Wildland fires often begin unnoticed, spread quickly, and are usually sighted by dense smoke. Scientists estimate that before the colonization of North America, wildfires burned 10 times the land that is consumed today.2 They help to maintain a healthy eco- system and have been a natural and fundamental part of the world’s forests and grasslands for millions of years. Fires cleanse and regenerate forests, giving new life to the soil and encouraging biodiversity. They are responsible for the evolution of many of the grasses, brushes, and tree species found in Utah. Wildfires are classified as Wildland and Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). Wildland fires occur in areas where development is- es sentially nonexistent except for roads, railroads, or power lines. WUI fires materialize in a geographical area where structures and other human development adjoins wildlands. -
