From grows a garden of the soul

J. M. Golding

From destruction grows a garden of the soul addresses the theme of loss and renewal. Having lived in the East Bay for nearly 30 years, walking and photographing often in its magnificent outdoor spaces, I was deeply affected as loss and renewal were played out on the region’s highest mountain, an intimately familiar landscape.

In September 2013, the Morgan Fire ravaged over 3,000 acres of Mt. Diablo. Walking through this charred terrain brought back the loss of an important relationship several years earlier that, in a startling synchronicity, had coincided with a fire in the foothills. That loss had come with a prediction that the land would heal, which that had been difficult to believe on an emotional level. Photographs of the burn area show the bleakness and devastation that remained after the Morgan Fire, a landscape of loss. There are subtle signs of hope, easy to miss, and perhaps requiring more interpretation than is justified.

Seemingly against all odds, spring 2014 brought special wildflowers to the area. Known as

“fire followers,” they only grow in the aftermath of an unusually hot fire, perhaps once or twice in a person’s lifetime. I discovered experientially that the land did heal – and this process seemed to me to reflect internal changes that I had experienced since the earlier fire, through the blossoming of new connection that had once seemed impossible. Where there had been desolation, there was now deep connectedness – mirrored in the unique, if ephemeral, beauty of these rare wildflowers that could only come into existence because of destruction.

I am proposing to show ten artworks from this series. While this will not fill the 42.75 feet of gallery space, with about 12 inches between pieces (and possibly an additional small panel containing a statement and perhaps a bio) these ten artworks would be appropriate for a joint show in a space that size.
