Amy Sherald (https://www.artnews.com/t/amy-sherald/): A Midsummer Afternoon Dream, 2020, oil on canvas, 106 by 101 inches. Tyler Mitchell and Amy Sherald—two Atlanta-born, New York–based artists—both capture everyday joy in their images of Black Americans. Recurring motifs in Mitchell’s photographs, installations, and videos include outdoor space and fashionable friends. Sherald, a painter, shares similar motifs: her colorful paintings with pastel palettes show Black people enjoying American moments, their skin painted in grayscale, the backgrounds and outfits flat. Both are best known for high-profile portrait commissions: in 2018 Mitchell became the first Black photographer to have a work grace the cover of Vogue. That shot of Beyoncé was followed, more recently, by a portrait of Kamala Harris for the same publication. Michelle Obama commissioned Amy Sherald to paint her portrait, and last year Vanity Fair asked Sherald to paint Breonna Taylor for a cover too. Below, the artists discuss the influence of the South on their work, and how they navigate art versus commercial projects. —Eds. Town & Country April, 2011 The Culture: Art Shows of the Season Rachel Wolf Who'll claim contemporary art supremacy this month: L.A. or New York? California's newest art impresario, Los Angeles's Museum of Contemporary Art director Jeffrey Deitch, is finally making waves in his new home. Along with a team of graffiti gurus, he'll launch the country's first full-scale museum survey of street art. "ART IN THE STREETS" (April 17-Aug. 8 at the Geffen Contemporary) traces the movement from its roots-with works by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat to contemporary practitioners like Banksy and Shepard Fairey. It's already deliciously controversial: In December, Deitch was accused of censorship when he painted over a MoCA-commissioned mural by the street artist Blu meant to promote the April exhibition. (Deitch thought residents would be offended by the antiwar work, which depicted coffins shrouded in $1 bills.) And contentiousness won't be in short supply on the East Coast either, thanks to KARA WALKER, the New York artist best known for her raunchy silhouettes and stop-motion animations about race and womanhood. On April 23, Walker mounts her largest exhibition of new work since 2008, a two-venue show at Chelsea's Sikkema Jenkins gallery and Lehmann Maupin's Lower East Side locale (through June 4). Of particular interest is a new video that builds on the scenic work Walker did for Lincoln Center's recent production On the Levee, a drama about the worst river flood, pre-Katrina, in U.S. history. . -

EXHIBIT H Page 1 of 2 DIVISION OF MEDICAL ASSISTANCE AND HEALTH SERVICES (DMAHS) MEDICAL ASSISTANCE DISBURSEMENT SERVICES RFP 2012 Destruction Requirements for State Records, Canceled Checks & Electronic Images The NJ Department of State’s Division of Archives and Record Management (NJDARM) is responsible for insuring that all public records are managed, preserved and destroyed in accordance with public law. Destruction of Canceled Checks The bank must destroy all public documents in accordance with state regulations and the retention schedule promulgated by NJDARM in consultation with the appropriate State agency and approved by the State Records Committee (SRC). The records retention schedule for the purposes of this bid is S820300-002-0048-0000: Canceled Checks. Image methodology and system quality control at the bank’s operations are the determinant factor when the SRC establishes the retention period, for the paper checks post imaging, and shall be determined after the awarding of this contact during the imaging certification process, which may include site inspections of both the imaging and destruction facility. The bank should be prepared for the possibility of storing checks for a period of three (3) to nine (9) months. Physical Destruction of Checks, Logs, and Reports Physical destruction of state records must comply with the existing (applicable) state standards as described in State Contract T-0387: Records Removal and Destruction Services. These standards will apply to any sub-contracted vendors the bank may utilize for destruction services. Specifically relating to the destruction of canceled checks; 1. The bank or sub-contractor shall only destroy public records that have been authorized for destruction by the NJDARM through a completed and processed “Request and Authorization for Records Disposal” form. -

With this assessment in mind, it argues that Iran is not likely transfer chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons to terrorist groups for several reasons. First, providing terrorists with such unconventional Downloaded By: [Georgetown University] At: 15:20 19 March 2008 weapons offers Iran few tactical advantages as these groups are able to operate effectively with existing methods and weapons. Second, Iran has become more cautious in its backing of terrorists in recent years. And third, Tehran is highly aware that any major escalation in its support for terrorism would incur U.S. wrath and international condemnation. The article concludes by offering recommendations for decreasing Iran’s support for terrorism. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran has been one of the world’s most active sponsors of terrorism. Tehran has armed, trained, financed, inspired, organized, and otherwise supported dozens of violent groups over the years.1 Iran has backed not only groups in its Persian Gulf neighborhood, but also terrorists and radicals in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Bosnia, the Philippines, and elsewhere.2 This support remains strong even today: the U.S. -
Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case. -

That same year, the beginnings of Callen- Lorde started when two physicians opened the St. Mark’s Health Clinic to provide free healthcare services to the ‘hippies, freaks, and queers’ in the East Village. Today, that little clinic is Callen-Lorde Community Health Center - a network of health centers soon to be in three boroughs of New York City and improving LGBTQ health worldwide. What has not changed in 50 years is our commitment to serving people regardless of ability to pay, our passion for health equity and justice for our diverse LGBTQ communities and people living with HIV, and our belief that access to healthcare is a human right and not a privilege. -

HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Dan Colen's first solo exhibition in Denmark: Psychic Slayer. “Death works with us in the world; it is a power that humanizes nature, that raises existence to being, and it is within each one of us as our most human quality…. As long as I live, I am a mortal man, but when I die, by ceasing to be man I also cease to be mortal, I am no longer capable of dying, and my impending death horrifies me because I see it as it is: no longer death, but the impossibility of dying.” ― Maurice Blanchot, Literature and the Right to Death At the core of this exhibition is an idea of a space that barely exists and is even harder to grasp and engage with: the space that bridges life and death. A bridge between two states of being – partly existential and reflective due to the promise of an impending demise, but also magical in the sense that this is a space where virtually anything is possible, making promises of being the moment of ultimate potentiality according to Martin Heidegger. In this regard the exhibition becomes a walk through what is normally regarded as an impossible space, where the architecture and remnants of a life’s choices lay displayed before the audience, beckoning interpretation, new choices, new directions. It is a space that fluctuates between different states of material and projected representations. Psychic Slayer begins with a hat that flies through an airy, light and almost empty room, caught on a gust of wind, its owner nowhere to be seen. -

The Destruction of Cultural Heritage: a Crime Against Property Or a Crime Against People?
THE JOHN MARSHALL REVIEW OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW THE DESTRUCTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: A CRIME AGAINST PROPERTY OR A CRIME AGAINST PEOPLE? PATTY GERSTENBLITH ABSTRACT The destruction of cultural heritage has played a prominent role in the ongoing conflicts in Syria and Iraq and in the recent conflict in Mali. This destruction has displayed the failure of international law to effectively deter these actions. This article reviews existing international law in light of this destruction and the challenges posed by the issues of non-international armed conflict, non-state actors and the military necessity exception. By examining recent developments in applicable international law, the article proposes that customary international law has evolved to interpret existing legal instruments and doctrines concerning cultural heritage in light of the principles of proportionality and distinction and a definition of intentionality that includes extreme negligence and willful disregard. As a result, international law may more effectively foster the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.
