UEFA launches Together #WePlayStrong

UEFA has launched a ground-breaking initiative, aimed at transforming perceptions of women's football and encouraging girls to take up and continue playing the game.

This new initiative will see UEFA working closely with its 55 member associations in order to ensure that football is the number one sport for women across Europe by 2020.

Geared primarily towards girls between the ages of 13 and 17, the campaign is founded upon the results of research conducted by the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, which has investigated the psychological, physical and emotional benefits for girls playing football.

This research showed that playing football can significantly boost confidence, happiness and self-image – helping young girls make friends and learn vital life skills.

The majority of girls who took part in the research felt that being part of a team made them stronger, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing together. Whatever the outcome of their matches, it was the shared experience that they valued, rather than winning.

A crucial aim of Together #WePlayStrong is to make teenage girls aware that football is also a game for girls, while highlighting the benefits to them of playing the sport, and pointing the way to grassroots opportunities in their area. The initiative is backed by UEFA's 55 member associations, as well as a number of celebrity supporters from the worlds of sport, entertainment and music.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin hailed the initiative. "Increasing the participation and the role of women in football has been one of my main objectives, both before and after I became UEFA President," he said.

"We need to change attitudes about women's football, and give women of all ages more encouragement and opportunities to play. The women's game has so much potential, and I believe the Together #WePlayStrong movement can be a driving force across our 55 national associations to achieve this."

The initiative was also heralded by UEFA women's football advisor Nadine Kessler, 2014 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year and UEFA Best Women's Player in Europe: "Whether you are playing at the UEFA Women's EURO or in the park with friends," she said, "football has the potential to give you so many positive things in life. It teaches you about being part of a team and the need to show respect to both your team-mates and your opponents.

"The Together #WePlayStrong campaign can change perceptions and make it cool for teenage girls to play football. If we manage to achieve this, we will be on our way to reaching our goal of making football the number one sport for girls around Europe."

The campaign also has the backing of the European Commission, with commissioner for sport Tibor Navracsics adding that it will give a welcome boost to women's football. "Football is so much more than a game," he said. "It promotes social inclusion and has the ability to transcend race, religion and gender.

"UEFA and the European Commission share a number of common objectives and I am delighted that European football's governing body has embarked on Together #WePlayStrong, which is touching on an area that has been neglected for too long. I hope this will encourage more girls and women to #BeActive!"

EURO 2013: Group stage EURO best: Semi-finals (2009) How they qualified: Automatically as hosts Coach: One to watch: (forward, Arsenal)

What to watch out for: Having made their breakthrough as the steely defensive side that reached the EURO semi- finals on debut under Vera Pauw, the Netherlands have become a team more in the classic Dutch mould under first Roger Reijners, Arjan van der Laan, and since December Sarina Wiegman. With Reijners still in charge, they earned a FIFA Women's World Cup bow in 2015, narrowly losing to eventual runners-up Japan in the last 16.

With no qualification duties this time, they have kept themselves busy with 11 friendlies in 2017 alone. The retirement of forward Manon Melis has put the spotlight even more firmly on Miedema, whose goals – with the youngster fresh from winning the 2014 WU19 EURO – propelled the Netherlands to the World Cup.

What to watch out for: In men's football they talk of Germany as a 'tournament team' but in the female game Norway have a claim to that title. They have exceeded expectations at the last three EUROs, getting to two finals and the 2009 last four, despite not possessing a squad to match their 1995 world champions or 2000 Olympic gold medallists.

Just like four years ago, they have qualified only to then change coach – this time Roger Finjord departed, the assistant to up until summer 2015 citing the commute to Oslo from his home in northern Norway as the cause. Martin Sjögren, fresh from leading Linköping to the Swedish title, inherited an exciting forward line including UEFA Best Women's Player in Europe 2015/16 Hegerberg and .

What to watch out for: Their run to the 2013 semi-finals – beating France on penalties before falling to Norway by the same method – ended a long period of disappointments at big tournaments for Denmark (even if they did not win any of their five games in 90 minutes and needed the drawing of lots to pip Russia to the last eight as a best third- placed team). They also began 2017 qualifying slowly but were to come good, culminating in an impressive scalp of . Having beaten Portugal 6-0, Russia 6-1 and 5-0 this year, a team with the attacking resources of Pernille Harder, Nadia Nadim and cannot be underestimated, with their hero goalkeeper of 2013 Stina Petersen still going strong.

What to watch out for: A gradual improvement since Ives Serneels took over in 2011 has resulted in a maiden qualification for Belgium. In 2013 qualifying, they were just two points behind second-placed Iceland (and four off Norway), losing only one of their four games against that pair.

A similarly promising showing in 2015 World Cup qualifying boosted their seeding for this tournament, and they comfortably made it through behind , whom they held away from home. Foreign club experience for the likes of Justien Odeurs, Lorca Van de Putte, and all-time top scorer Tessa Wullaert has certainly enhanced their credentials.

EURO 2013: Semi-finals EURO best: Winners (1984) How they qualified: Group 4 winners, W7 D0 L1 F22 A3 Pts21 Coach: One to watch: (forward, Rosengård) What to watch out for: The Swedes are often polar opposites to Norway, tipped heavily before a tournament only to fall short (hence surprise losses to their neighbours in the 2005 semis and 2009 quarters). But following a 2011 World Cup bronze, they have found a new toughness since Sundhage returned from the United States to take charge prior to the 2013 finals on home soil.

Only an epic 1-0 semi-final defeat by Germany denied them a dream decider against Norway, and Sweden took a further step forward when they ground down both the US and Brazil to make the 2016 Olympic final. Though Germany took gold, Sweden had shown their ability to steer a knockout course, though losing their last qualifier in Denmark cost them top seeding in the EURO draw.

EURO 2013: Quarter-finals EURO best: Runners-up (1993, 1997) How they qualified: Group 6 runners-up, W6 D0 L2 F26 A8 Pts18 Coach: One to watch: (forward, Verona)

What to watch out for: Only Norway can match Italy's record of qualifying for 11 final tournaments and the Azzurre have never gone out before the last eight of any EURO – but they will not travel to the Netherlands among the favourites. While the Italians lost narrowly to Germany in the 2009 and 2013 quarter-finals, a qualifying campaign in which they were beaten home and away by Switzerland is more representative of their actual form – especially since long-standing forward switched to coaching the men's Under-16s. That is not to undervalue a team with , and Melania Gabbiadini (sister of Napoli's Manolo), and despite worrying form in some friendlies they did beat Russia 3-0 in Brazil in December.

EURO 2013: Group stage EURO best: Group stage (1997, 2001, 2009, 2013) How they qualified: Group 5 runners-up, W4 D2 L2 F14 A9 Pts14 Coach: Elena Fomina One to watch: Elena Danilova (midfielder, Ryazan)

What to watch out for: Russia have tended to falter in the group stage as reliably as they have qualified, though they were unfortunate in 2013 to miss out on the quarter-finals via a drawing of lots with Denmark. This time round, only a 5-0 victory in their last qualifier against Croatia ensured the Russians avoided a play-off by virtue of goals scored, ahead of fellow runner-up Romania, and recent results have not been promising.

The base of the team is formed by the talents that won the 2005 UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship, including Anna Kozhnikova in defence, plus Elena Morozova and the prolific but injury-plagued Elena Danilova further forward. Elena Fomina took over as coach in 2015 having often been the hero on the pitch.

EURO 2013: Quarter-finals EURO best: Quarter-finals (2009, 2013) How they qualified: Group 3 winners, W8 D0 L0 F27 A0 Pts24 Coach: One to watch: Wendie Renard (defender, Lyon)

What to watch out for: In terms of raw talent, France perhaps ought to have been the dominant nation in Europe in recent years, rather than having suffered a series of quarter-final near-misses, at global level as well as in the past two EUROs. The UEFA Women's Champions League supremacy of Lyon, with a very similar squad to Les Bleues, is proof of that.

But it has not happened and three years after replacing Bruno Bini as coach, Philippe Bergeroo has himself made way for Olivier Echouafni. Can he help France turn their habitual superiority in big matches into goals? That is the key for the team who, on paper, should be Germany's strongest challengers.

EURO 2013: Quarter-final EURO best: Quarter-finals (2013) How they qualified: Group 1 winners, W7 D0 L1 F34 A2 Pts21 Coach: Feryr Alexandersson One to watch: Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir (midfielder, Wolfsburg) What to watch out for: Long before Iceland's heroics at UEFA EURO 2016, the women had established themselves at the top level, qualifying in 2009 and getting through their group four years later. They achieved qualification this time with relative ease, only dropping points in a last-match defeat by Scotland with a finals place already secure.

Iceland suffered a serious pre-tournament blow with the loss to injury of Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir, whose goals have been a key reason for their rise in status over the last decade. Also out with the same cruciate ligament rupture is her sister Elísa and Dóra María Lárusdóttir. Still, they do boast ten-goal joint qualifying top scorer Harpa Thorsteinsdóttir as well as talented midfielders Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir, Gunnarsdóttir, Dagný Brynjarsdóttir and Fanndís Fridriksdóttir.

EURO 2013: Play-offs EURO best: First qualification How they qualified: Group 8 runners-up, W5 D2 L1 F18 A4 Pts17 Coach: One to watch: (forward, Sand)

What to watch out for: Austria will be making their major tournament debut in the Netherlands, but the fact they were seeded second in their group (a ranking they justified handsomely) shows that this has been coming for a while. They reached the 2013 play-offs, having been pipped to automatic qualification on goal difference, and were second behind France in their 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying group.

Indeed, from their April 2014 World Cup qualifying loss to France to a 1-0 home defeat by Norway some two years and a day later, Austria went 18 games unbeaten – holding the likes of Spain and Italy and seeing off teams such as Australia during one nine-match winning run.

EURO 2013: Fourth in qualifying group EURO best: First qualification How they qualified: Group 6 winners, W8 D0 L0 F34 A3 Pts24 Coach: Martina Voss-Tecklenburg One to watch: (forward, Chelsea) What to watch out for: Switzerland have begun to turn youth-finals potency into senior success. Their major step forward came with reaching the last World Cup, comfortably seeing off Iceland and Denmark to book a debut final tournament, where a 10-1 thrashing of Ecuador took them into the last 16.

They were even more convincing in qualifying for their first European finals, with Italy (and everyone else, in fact) beaten home and away. Former Germany player Voss-Tecklenburg has enabled a team with a talented attack including Bachmann, and Ana-Maria Crnogorčević to realise their potential.

EURO 2013: Group stage EURO best: Runners-up (1984, 2009) How they qualified: Group 7 winners, W7 D1 L0 F32 A1 Pts22 Coach: One to watch: (defender, Manchester City)

What to watch out for: The early 2013 exit, which included a 3-2 loss to Spain, sparked a change in management and young Welshman Mark Sampson led England to 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup bronze, the best European finish in Canada. Sampson opted to name his squad on 3 Apriil, more than three months before the deadline, and a group of players not too dissimilar to the World Cup selection have looked good in the four friendlies since, including wins against Austria, Switzerland and Denmark, with looking on excellent form up front having, like fellow forward , returned from long-term injury.

EURO 2013: Play-offs EURO best: First qualification How they qualified: Group 1 runners-up, W7 D0 L1 F30 A7 Pts21 Coach: Anna Signeul One to watch: Jane Ross (forward, Manchester City)

What to watch out for: In 2009 they were pipped in the play-offs by Russia on away goals, and four years later they conceded twice deep into extra time in Spain to be foiled at the last. Yet after those near-misses, Scotland are now in their first final tournament, dropping points in qualifying only at home to Iceland.

The longest-serving coach at the finals, Anna Signeul will end her 12-year Scotland reign by leading them in their first- ever major tournament. However, their preparations have been marred by injuries to Kim Little and Jennifer Beattie, two crucial players. While Jane Ross was a ten-goal qualifying joint-top scorer and the likes of , , Ifeoma Dieke and the promising Erin Cuthbert mean Scotland still have a strong squad, they would have loved to have England-based Little and Beattie for the keenly-awaited opener against their neighbours..

EURO 2013: Quarter-finals EURO best: Semi-finals (1997) How they qualified: Group 2 winners, W8 D0 L0 F39 A2 Pts24 Coach: One to watch: Jenni Hermoso (forward, Paris Saint-Germain) What to watch out for: In 2017 Spain have won the , beaten Belgium 4-1 away and 7-0 at hone, also defeated Canada and lost only 2-1 to Brazil. Therefore it is no surprise that many feel this could be the time for Spain to start to match their success at women's youth level in the senior competition, not least as several of those junior titles were under Jorge Vilda. Verónica Boquete was a surprise absence from the squad but recent Paris signing Hermoso, her new club-mate and Barcelona's are among a host of players well capable of performing at the highest level.

EURO 2013: Fourth in qualifying group EURO best: First qualification How they qualified: Group 2 runners-up, W4 D1 L3 F15 A11 Pts13, won play-off v Romania (agg: 1-1, Portugal won on away goals) Coach: One to watch: Cláudia Neto (midfielder, Linköping) What to watch out for: All the other finals debutants commenced qualifying in the second tier of seeds, but Portugal were drawn from Pot 4 and ranked 25th of the 40 competing countries. Even so, they overhauled both the Republic of Ireland and Finland to earn a play-off, beating the latter in a memorable comeback from two goals down, Cláudia Neto hitting a hat-trick in a 3-2 triumph.

It was the third time they had been one two-legged tie away from the finals and, despite being held 0-0 at home by Romania, the return fixture ended 1-1 after extra time, a strike from debutant securing Portugal a surprise EURO place on away goals. While they have experience of facing the elite sides from hosting the annual Algarve Cup each March, this is a huge step up for the Portuguese, even with a squad containing players with foreign know-how like Neto, and .
