Emergency Action Plan for Women's Rowing Emergency Action Plan for Women’s Rowing Year: 2019-20 Location: P. Sue Beckwith, MD Boathouse Terrill Mill Park 1201 N. Dubuque Street Iowa City, IA 52242 Emergency EquiPment Available: • AED (BBH Main Lobby); • First Aid Kits (Coaches’ launches); • Personal Flotation Device (Coaches’ launches); • Sphygmomanometer, stethoscoPe, thermometers (BBH Athletic Training Room) In the event of an emergency: 1. A coach will notify the Staff Athletic Trainer by either two-way radio or mobile phone. Each coach has both a two-way radio and mobile telePhone in his/her launch and the Staff Athletic Trainer has a two-way radio, a mobile telePhone, and a land line in the training room. 2. The nature of the emergency will be exPlained to the Staff Athletic Trainer and s/he will determine what level of response required. 3. If the emergency is deemed by the Staff Athletic Trainer to not require an ambulance, s/he will determine a resPonse Plan and meeting site (see enclosed maP). 4. If Emergency Medical Services are deemed necessary, the Staff Athletic Trainer will activate the EMS system by calling 9-1-1 and will provide the following information: Ø the nature of the emergency; Ø location of the accident, illness or injury; Ø method of transPortation needed; Ø level of resPonse needed. A coach also has the oPtion of calling 9-1-1 directly if the emergency warrants. After doing so, s/he will notify the Staff Athletic Trainer. 5. If an ambulance is going to resPond to an emergency call, the location of their resPonse will be determined by where the rowing team is located on the river at the time of the emergency. There are three sites where a boat can reach shore and be accessed (see enclosed maP): Ø Ashton House If an injury/illness/accident occurs between PumP House turn and the uPstream terminus at The Heartland Inn. Ø Beckwith Boathouse If an injury/illness/accident occurs between Hancher Footbridge and the PumP House. Ø Iowa Memorial Union If an injury/illness/accident occurs between the Iowa Avenue Bridge and the Hancher Footbridge. The rower(s) will be taken to shore at the aPProPriate site in either the rowing shell or the coach’s launch. The Staff Athletic Trainer will meet the injured or ill student at the apProPriate site to assist in medical care and transportation. 6. A qualified emergency rescuer will provide emergency care until EMS personnel arrive. The rescuer will then Provide pertinent information (cause of injury, vital signs, treatment rendered, medical history) to EMS personnel and assist with emergency care as required. In the event of a susPected/confirmed concussion or spine injury, the Staff Athletic Trainer is in charge and will direct EMS as aPProPriate. 7. If a student is involved, the Staff Athletic Trainer, or his/her designee, will accomPany the student to the hosPital and direct the ER Providers to contact the team Physician. 8. If a student is involved, the Staff Athletic Trainer will contact the following Parties with information that is consistent with the student’s consent: Ø Director of Athletic Training Ø Associate Director of Athletic Training Ø Head Coach Ø parents/guardians/family 9. If a student is involved, the Staff Athletic Trainer will comPlete a SIMS injury rePort and, if apProPriate, notify the Sport Administrator within 24 hours of the incident. Annual and more periodic training will occur in the form of staff grouP sessions. Further, Student Athletic Trainers will receive EAP training via their individual sPort orientation at the beginning of each assignment. Any modifications of Procedures, rePort of malfunctioning equiPment, or changes in equiPment locations will be immediately reported to the Associate Director and reviewed with the rest of the staff. Annual or designated review of this EAP by University officials will take Place through the Director. Madison St. Incident Zone Landing Area Ashton House Beckwith Boathouse (BBH) Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) Emergency Action Plan for Carver Hawkeye Arena Location: Main Arena Floor at 1 Elliott Drive, Iowa City IA 52242 Year: 2019-2020 (Annual and Periodic Training dates are kept with Associate Director) Medical Supplies Available: Medical Kit and Fluids on site; in S181 AED (Taping Cabinet; on home water cart during events), stretcher, vacuum splints, stiff collar, O2, ambu bag, airways (all Storage Room Rehab), epinephrine, IV, Ringer’s, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, oral thermometers (all MD Exam Room), cool tub (Wet Room) 1. Staff or designee (Caller) calls 911 (on cell or 9-911 on land line) to activate EMS. (ambulance is present when competition crowd size is 5,000 or greater) This person will instruct EMS to report to room S181 or other location by room number or court via the North Loading Dock off of Newton Rd. preferred or the West entrance on the concourse level (4th floor) and use the elevator to the 1st (court level)or other floor. 2. The Caller has responsibility of flagging down EMS at the garage door entrance at the North Dock receiving area or the Main West entrance by the ticket office. Other staffs have responsibility to clear bystanders from the victim. On competition where Ambulance is present, AT will contact UI athletics event management to radio the paramedics to proper area. 3. A qualified emergency rescuer provides emergency care until EMS personnel arrive. The rescuer then provides pertinent information to EMS (cause if injury, vital signs, treatment rendered, medical history) and assists with emergency care as needed. When a concussion or spine injury is involved, The AT in charge and if present will direct EMS as appropriate. 4. If an athlete is involved, staff AT or a designee will accompany the athlete to the hospital and direct the ER providers to contact the team physician and keep the Sport supervisor informed. 5. If an athlete is involved, rescuer will contact the Associate Director of Athletic Training, Director of Athletic Training, Head Coach, and parents/guardians/family within hours to provide appropriate information and status. 6. If an athlete is involved, Staff AT will complete a SIMS injury report and notify the sport administrator within 24 hours of the incident. 7. Annual and more periodic training will occur by staff group sessions and by individual sport orientation to student assignments at the beginning of each assignment. Any modifications of procedures, report of malfunctioning equipment or changes in location will be immediately reported to the Associate Director and reviewed with the rest of the staff. Annual or designated review of this EAP by University officials will take place through the Director.
