Lublin 2016 (language of publication: Polish, paperback, 174 pages) Ekomodernizmy [Ecomodernisms] is the second volume of the Green Literary History series. The volume editors claim that the series has been inspired both by green cultural studies that originated in the United States and by the tradi- tion of nature writing. The ecological turn of the 1970s led to the development of ecocritical humanities, and this volume of articles illustrates the necessity of practising these humanities also on the ground of Polish literature and in the literary periods previous to the presentday one. Izabela Poniatowska studies Polish literary history and criticism in the latter half of the nineteenth century and discovers that interdisciplinary research leads to extending the range of ecocritical issues that are worth discussing. She argues that this results in more objectivity in studying culture. When reading texts written in the nineteenth century, she realises that literary history has come full circle as the topics analysed these days were already present in criticism over a century ago. Agata Zawiszewska characterises the work of the Society for Animal Care in its Warsaw branch in the last decade of the nineteenth century. She emphasises the modern dimension of postulating that animal rights should be observed and elaborates on the priorities of the Society. She places the emancipation activist Paulina KuczalskaReinschmit in the centre of her attention, since Kuczalska- ‑Reinschmit was also an important activist who participated in the activities of the Society for Animal Care. -

A WRITER’S CALENDAR Compiled by J. L. Herrera for my mother and with special thanks to Rose Brown, Peter Jones, Eve Masterman, Yvonne Stadler, Marie-France Sagot, Jo Cauffman, Tom Errey and Gianni Ferrara INTRODUCTION I began the original calendar simply as a present for my mother, thinking it would be an easy matter to fill up 365 spaces. Instead it turned into an ongoing habit. Every time I did some tidying up out would flutter more grubby little notes to myself, written on the backs of envelopes, bank withdrawal forms, anything, and containing yet more names and dates. It seemed, then, a small step from filling in blank squares to letting myself run wild with the myriad little interesting snippets picked up in my hunting and adding the occasional opinion or memory. The beginning and the end were obvious enough. The trouble was the middle; the book was like a concertina — infinitely expandable. And I found, so much fun had the exercise become, that I was reluctant to say to myself, no more. Understandably, I’ve been dependent on other people’s memories and record- keeping and have learnt that even the weightiest of tomes do not always agree on such basic ‘facts’ as people’s birthdays. The Discreet Horror of the Holocaust in Ida Fink's Stories
CLEaR , 2016, 3(1), ISSN 2453 - 7128 DOI: 10.1515/clear - 2016 - 0003 The Discreet H orror of the Holocaust in Ida Fink’s S tories Ja nusz Waligóra Pedagogical University in Cracow, Poland [email protected] Abstract The topic of the article is writings by Ida Fi nk. It analyses stories of the author of Wiosna 194 1 ( The Spring 1941 ) which refer to the Holocaust. The analysis also draws attention to the poetics of “discreet horror” in which Ida Fink’s stories are embedded. In her records the author does not underline the cruelty, but shows the terror of the situation by subtle narrative and compositional manoeuvres. The picture of death is de - emphasised by the psychology of characters, and the main focus are complicated human relationships in which the author with a great delicacy presents various emotional states of people who, despite being sentenced to death, still try to survive the war. Ida Fink’s stories are different from the majority of Holocaust literature which exposes the severity and brutality of mass death. These storie s stand out as an exceptional phenomenon among works by such authors as Tadeusz Borowski, Zofia Nałkowska, Leon Buczkowski, Henryk Grynberg or Bogdan Wojdowski. On the Polish-Hebrew Literary Bilingualism in Israel (Reconnaissance)* Keywords: bilingualism, Polish-Hebrew bilingual writers, Polish literature in Israel. The phenomenon of the Polish literary milieu in Israel was created by immi- grants who came to Eretz Israel between the interwar period and the March Aliyah, as well as later [see: Famulska-Ciesielska, Żurek]. Both writers leav- ing Poland with some achievements, as well as those who only started their literary work after many years in Israel, repeatedly faced the dilemma of what language to write in: Polish, which was the first language of assimilated Jews or those who strongly identified themselves as Jews, but who did not know any of the Jewish languages, or in Hebrew, which was often only learnt in the New Country?1 At the time the Israeli statehood was being formed, Hebrew was the third official language of Palestine alongside Arabic and English, and since 1948 the official language of the State of Israel [Medinat Israel, see: Krauze, Zieliński, * Polish original: (2016) „Bejn polanit le’iwrit”. Thus a new directorship was elected for the year 2003 consisting of members of first generation survivors and of the continuing generations. Committees made up of members of the directorship and other members, as needed, will carry out the current work. Finances In the past few years the Association’s income has decreased. There have been significantly fewer donations. Furthermore, several years ago, the Association stopped charging members for fees for events. Meanwhile, the Association’s expenses have increased. A considerable amount of resources are needed for the many cultural activities and the various commemorative events that take place in order to preserve the memory of the Krakow community. Each cultural event that we arrange costs about N IS 1,500 (this includes invitations, printing, and postage for about 600 members). -
