New combinations for invalid names in Prosthechea (Orchidaceae) CÁSSIO VAN DEN BERG Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana, Departamento de Ciências Biológicas, Av. Transnordestina s.n., 44036-900, Feira de San- tana, Bahia, Brazil; e-mail: [email protected] Prosthechea Knowles & Westcott (1838: 111) is the third largest genus of Laeliinae Bentham (1881: 287) with 117 species (Chase et al. 2015). The group of species corresponding to Prosthechea is widespread in the Neotropics, especially in Mexico, Central America and Brazil, and has been treated since the 60’s as distinct from Epidendrum Linnaeus (1763: 1347) but with contradictory generic placement. For example, Dressler & Pollard (1971, 1976) included most species in Encyclia subgenus Osmophytum (Lindley 1841: 81) Dressler & Pollard (1971: 433), but dealt only with Mexican species. Pabst & Dungs (1975, 1977) followed Dressler and treated the Brazilian species also in Encyclia Hooker (1828: t. 2831). Brieger (1960) considered them part of Hormidium (Lindley 1841: 81) Heynhold (1841: 880) and later Pabst et al. (1981) transferred most Brazilian species to Anacheilium Hoffmannsegg (1842: 229). Molecular phylogenetic analyses of plastid and nuclear data confirmed that the whole group was monophyletic (van den Berg et al. 2000, 2009, Higgins et al., 2003). After an extensive discussion on the generic names by Higgins (1997), he established that the oldest name for the whole clade was Prosthechea and proposed most of the new combinations for species previously included in Epidendrum, Encyclia, Anacheilium and Hormidium.

Email: [email protected] Received September 30th, 2012; revised November 11th, 2012; accepted November 24th, 2012 ABSTRACT Prosthechea is a neotropical genus, belonging to the family Orchidaceae. The Brazil recorded 32 species of the genus of which nine occur in the state of Bahia, including P. silvana and P. moojenii. The first, P. silvana is epiphytic, endemic Atlantic Forest areas of South and Southeast of the Bahia and morphologically similar to P. moojenii, rupicolous spe- cies considered endemic to the Chapada Diamantina. There are doubts whether these two species are really distinct, because they differ only as to the way of life and aspects related to the size of the inflorescence and floral structure. Thus the anatomical study of these two species, emerges as a tool that aims to investigate the delimitation of these taxa. For this study, the sheet was cut freehand with a razor blade to obtain cross sections and treated by chemical means to obtain paradermic sections, all the material was stained with safranine/Astra blue (safrablau) and safranin, respectively, and the sections were then mounted between a semipermanent and cover slipped slides.

The new nothospecies is most similar to P. cochleata but the petals are proportionally broader and the mucro of the labellum is subapical, as observed in P. radi ata . Additionally, the perianth segments are neither as strongly reflexed as they are inP. cochleata nor patent as in P. radi ata . A table of diagnostic characters for the new hybrid and its putative parents, a comparative figure, and a map showing their geographical distributions are also provided.

©Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, download unter www.biologiezentrum.at Ann. Naturhist. Mus. A bstract Auguste R. Endres botanized in Costa Rica between the end of 1866 and the first months of 1874, spending a short time in Panama. In these seven years he devoted his main attention to the still unrevealed richness of Costa Rican Orchidaceae. The results of his activity have still to be properly evaluated, but his contributions to the botany of Costa Rica are extraordinary in quantity and quality. Notwithstanding his immense labor, only a very small portion of the orchid plants he collected, studied and illustrated were published as new to the science. He co-authored eleven species with Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, who himself described another 22 species based on his collections.

A NOTE ON PROSTHECHEA (ORCHIDACEAE: LAELIINAE), WITH A NEW SPECIES FRANCO PUPULIN Jardin Botanico Lankester, Universidad de Costa Rica, and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Mailing address: P.O. Box 1031-7050 Cartago, Costa Rica, A.c. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Current views about the phylogeny of Laeliinae (Orchidaceae) and the systematic position of Prosthechea and related genera are discussed. Morphologic characters used to circumscribe genera in the Prosthechea clade are reviewed. A new species from Costa Rica, P. barbozaei, is described and illustrated. Prosthechea barbozaei is closely related to P. glauca and P. ortizii, from which it may be distinguished by the ligulate sepals and oblong petals, the elliptic-oblong lateral lobes and the suborbicular, retuse midlobe of the lip, the shape of the callus and the androclinium, and the vegetative habit, with suborbicular, strongly ancipituous pseudobulbs, respectively. After the publication of the most recent and comprehensive treatment of the Orchidaceae in the Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica, new species continue being discovered in the country on a regular basis. Novelties in Acianthera, Epidendrum, Lepanthes, Masdevallia, Pleurothallis, and Specklinia are discussed. We present eight new records including the reconsideration of Epidendrum concavilabium (as different from E.
