Maggie Lena Walker Family Papers – vii Maggie Lena Walker Family Papers – 1 INTRODUCTION The Maggie Lena Walker Family Papers is an archival collection that was found at the Walker family home, 110 ½ East Leigh Street, Richmond, Virginia. The home was purchased by the National Park Service in 1979 and is now the Maggie Lena Walker National Historic Site (MAWA). These papers, along with the records of the Independent Order of Saint Luke, Right Worthy Grand Council of Virginia, the organization which Walker led, form the core of the Site’s historic archives. In late spring of 1998, Jennifer Quinn, a Museum Technician for the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities working through a cooperative agreement with the Northeast Museum Services Center (NMSC), processed the bulk (20.5 linear feet) of the family papers. The papers were organized according to family members with further subdivisions such as diaries and correspondence. The collection was then rehoused in acid-free folders and archives boxes with metal fasteners were removed. Particularly acidic materials were separated from other materials in a folder with acid-free paper, and oversize items were flattened and removed to oversize archival boxes with separation sheets indicating the original location. Staff members at the Site subsequently identified approximately three linear feet of Maggie Walker Family papers not processed in the original project. In addition, staff had identified the subjects of the over five hundred unprocessed photographs. In late 2015 and early 2016, NMSC Archivist Margaret Welch cataloged the remaining papers and updated the corresponding catalog records in the National Park Service’s collection management system to include the photographs and other new items. MAWA Curator Ethan Bullard contributed the text for the updated biographical information and photographic descriptions. This finding aid updates the original and retains the three parts and one appendix as follows: - Part 1: Collection Description: - a scope and content note (or brief synopsis of the collection), - an outline showing the organization of the collection, and - descriptions of the various subcollections and series into which the collection is organized. - Part 2: Biographical Notes: - brief biographical summaries for each of the members of the Walker family members represented in the collection. - Part 3: Collection Listing: - a box, folder, and item listing of the collection and of the items removed from the collection due to size. Items are listed with their archival inventory numbers as assigned by park staff. “---” in place of an archives inventory number indicates that the item was not given an archives number. - Appendix A: Index by Archival Number: - An index of each item included in this collection according to the park’s initial archival item numbering system. Includes a 2 – Maggie Lena Walker Family Papers short description of each item, the subcollection it is arranged under, and the box and folder number where it can be found. Unnumbered items are at the end. - Appendix B: Photographs Subcollection. - List of the individual photographs including location, title, creator, date, individual MAWA catalog

  • The Claudia Quintet September
HotThe Box Critics John McDonough John Corbett Jim Macnie Paul de Barros René Marie I Wanna Be Evil Swing Fever ½ ½ Grand Masters Of Jazz The Claudia Quintet September Randy Brecker ½ ½ Brecker Brothers Band Reunion Critics’ Comments René Marie, I Wanna Be Evil: With Love To Eartha Kitt Swinging, soulful vocalist René Marie has great control and range but has had difficulty defining her territory. Oddly, this tribute album to Eartha Kitt has sparked some originality. Her clever, funky arrangement (in three) of “Let’s Do It,” a sexy “Santa Baby” and her daringly transgressive original “Weekend” add punch. The earnest Marie is more seduced by Kitt’s theatrical “earthiness” than by her winking kitsch. —Paul de Barros The Eartha Kitt songbook gives this excellent singer a superb array of material (from Dave Frishberg to Cole Porter) in which to show her winking, sinewy stuff. The East Side cleverness and sophistication tilt toward cabaret, but Wycliffe Gordon bridges the gap with humor and a few strange sounds. —John McDonough Successful transfusion of Eartha Kitt’s red-blooded, raw sex and exotica, purred and snarled as a steely story of determination and triumph. Marie throws a few of her own curves into the mix, but plays it rather close to the source. —John Corbett Swing Fever, Grand Masters Of Jazz Obviously prepared with love and admiration for the swing-pins. Memorable flashes from Clark Terry and Jackie Ryan, and DeFranco’s got such a huge presence, but much of the disc and two freebie DVDs falls short of being extraordinary. —John Corbett Love the idea of the locals hosting the heroes, especially when the locals kick it with so much verve.

  • NEW YORK VOICES March 2007
NEW YORK VOICES March 2007 New York Voices is the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. Like the great groups that have come before, such as Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Singers Unlimited, Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, they have learned from the best and taken the art form to new levels. Their interests are rooted in jazz, but often Brazilian, R and B, classical, and pop influences are included with equal creativity and authenticity. The group was formed in 1987 by Darmon Meader, Peter Eldridge, Kim Nazarian, Caprice Fox and Sara Krieger. By way of explanation, Darmon, Peter, Kim and Caprice attended Ithaca College in NY and were part of an invitational alumni group formed to tour the European Jazz Festivals in the summer of '86. As a result of this exciting experience, the idea of forming a professional group was born. In 1989 they would sign their first record deal with GRP Records and release their self titled debut album, New York Voices. The group received rave notices and quickly received domestic and international recognition in the Jazz World. From '89 to '94, they released four total CDs on the GRP Label, Hearts of Fire, What's Inside, and The Collection. While recording for GRP, they underwent personnel changes. In 1992, Sara Krieger retired her chair, and after auditioning over 60 vocalists from all over the U.S., the group found Lauren Kinhan. There was an immediate chemistry in fit and sound, allowing the group to make a quick transition and become the "new" New York Voices.

  • December 2015 Paquito D'rivera Defies Categorization. the Winner
December 2015 Paquito D'Rivera defies categorization. The winner of fouteen GRAMMY Awards, he is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. Born in Havana, Cuba, he performed at age 10 with the National Theater Orchestra, studied at the Havana Conservatory of Music and, at 17, became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony. As a founding member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, he directed that group for two years, while at the same time playing both the clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. He eventually went on to premier several works by notable Cuban composers with the same orchestra. Additionally, he was a founding member and co-director of the innovative musical ensemble Irakere. With its explosive mixture of jazz, rock, classical and traditional Cuban music never before heard, Irakere toured extensively throughout America and Europe, won several GRAMMY nominations (1979, 1980) and a GRAMMY (1979). His numerous recordings include more than 30 solo albums. In 1988, he was a founding member of the United Nation Orchestra, a 15-piece ensemble organized by Dizzy Gillespie to showcase the fusion of Latin and Caribbean influences with jazz. D’Rivera continues to appear as guest conductor. A GRAMMY was awarded the United Nation Orchestra in 1991, the same year D’Rivera received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Carnegie Hall for his contributions to Latin music. Additionally, D’Rivera’s highly acclaimed ensembles- the Chamber Jazz Ensemble, the Paquito D'Rivera Big Band, and the Paquito D’Rivera Quintet are in great demand world wide.

Whether you plan to attend a single event or several this weekend, we’re excited to welcome you to a music-filled festival in which you can hear 28 compositions by 25 composers. This year’s festival marks the 30th anniversary of the Forum, a milestone we don’t take for granted. When the ICF was founded in the spring of 1987, many state-based composers organizations existed. In 2017, that number has shrunk to a handful. Some organizations folded, while others consolidated. Miraculously, the ICF has flourished, producing 86 concerts of music featuring 257 composers, ranging from emeriti faculty to elementary school-aged students. We produce a fall concert tour and a winter/spring festival each year. We commission several young composers to write new works each year. We jointly commission a work with the Iowa Music Teachers Association, and annually award a choral composition prize in conjunction with the Iowa Choral Directors Association. This year, we began a two-year cycle of new commissions with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony.
