The bureau is responsible for protecting cultural heritage, giving guidance on aesthetic appreciation, supporting community organisations, nurturing talent in arts and culture, developing local cultural industries, as well as organising cultural entertainment programmes, such as concerts, exhibitions, seminars, music classes, dance, drama courses, Macao International Parade, Macao International Music Festival, Macao Arts Festival, Macao City Fringe Festival, China Cultural Heritage Day, Macao Youth Music Competition and Macao Annual Visual Arts Exhibition. It also provides subsidies for different cultural and art programmes as well as scholarships to support the publication of research and advanced studies about arts.

The historical buildings have been eroded in varying degrees by urban development and construction with the development of economic and commercial society, as a result of which, the overall style of the historic district has been destroyed. Historical building is the witness of human development trace, which reflects the regional culture to a certain extent. Therefore, the protection of historical buildings also means the protection of the regional culture. The Macao SAR government has accumulated a lot of experience in the protection of historical buildings. The historical building resources of Macao were sorted in this article, to analyze the cultural characteristics of historical buildings, and the experience of the Macao SAR government in protecting historical buildings was summarized, with the hope to bring some inspiration for the protection of domestic historical buildings. 1 Introduction The Macao Peninsula was an important channel for the Maritime Silk Road in the sixteenth century and also the earliest missionary center in the Far East. The culture of Macao was rooted in the Chinese society, and in 1557, the Portuguese brought the Portuguese culture after they entered Macao. Then the missionaries carried out the activities of Western learning spreading to the East, and Macao acted as the intermediary role of Chinese and Western culture.

    The Marriage of East and West in St. Anthony’s Parish Let’s experience a special romance in this lovely multicultural vicinity where you’ll see beautiful urban space with charming Portuguese and Chinese buildings and their enchanting stories. Attractions to explore: 1. Ruins of St. Paul’s After the completion of St. Paul’s Church, it caught fires in 1595 and 1601 respectively. Afterwards, the Jesuits re- constructed the Church in 1602 and was completed in 1644. The re-constructed Church was massive in scale, with a grand façade full of design details. From the bottom the façade has five tiers. A Catholic saint is engraved in each of four tabernacles between columns of the second tier. The walls are covered with bas-reliefs in various patterns, such as chrysanthemum and peony, moon, sun as well as Chinese inscriptions. The whole façade has been acknowledged as a perfect fusion of western and eastern cultures. In 1835, the Church was destroyed by fire. The façade which was left after the fire becomes the world famous monument – the Ruins of St. Paul’s. At the back of the façade is the Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt. Opening hours: Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt 09:00 – 18:00, last admission at 17:30, closed on Tuesdays after 14:00, open during public holidays. Admission: Free 2 Section of Old City Wall This surviving segment of the city’s defence structures is a remnant of an early Portuguese defensive wall system around their port settlements. The construction of the Wall was strictly forbidden in the early Ming Dynasty and thus it was built and then demolished for a couple of times.

When Cirque du Soleil performed in Hong Kong at the end of last year, there weren’t too many doddery old Chinese ladies in fading blouses and US$1 slippers in the audience. Such ladies are regular fi xtures at Macau’s casinos, and you’ll often spot them hobbling up to the cashier to buy US$25,000 worth of chips. Somehow, the gambling grannies never seem to get mugged on their way home. When you’ve got a proven market, providing the best offering can prove profi table. It’s no surprise that the Las Vegas-style Sands Macau has proved a hit since opening in May 2004. Its 50-foot ceilings and plush interiors offered a more comfortable gambling environment than those of the erstwhile monopoly casino operator, Stanley Ho’s STDM. In this issue of Inside Asian Gaming, Stanley Ho’s right-hand man, Ambrose So, admits that his company’s fl agship Casino Lisboa, which was built in the 60s, obviously falls behind in terms of “hardware.” STDM’s gaming subsidiary, SJM, is busy carrying out renovations and building new facilities to keep up with Macau’s new foreign casino operators.
