BY ALLISON HATA narrow metal platform approximately 764 feet above ground offers the perfect vantage point for taking in the contrasting environs of Macau. A To the left are the high-rise hotels and casinos that light up like beacons on the skyline; to the right, there’s a wide expanse of sea that reminds visitors of the island locale. It’s a perspective that showcases the juxtaposition in this special administrative region of China—opulence building upon decades of Macau’s his- tory as a fisherman’s trading port. This observation deck is part of the “new” Macau, opening just two years after the former Portuguese colony was returned to China in 1999. Housing the world’s highest commercial bungee jump and skywalk, Macau Tower has become an iconic landmark and serves as a symbol of the glittering developments trans- forming the area into a luxury travel destination. Discussions of Macau today often elicit Las Vegas comparisons, a point emphasized by the number of United States-based companies staking claim on the islands and peninsula comprising the region. Debuting in 2004, the Sands Macao opened doors for more international operators. In the subsequent decade, Wynn and MGM built properties in the historic center of Macau’s peninsula; on the island side, familiar names like Crown Towers, Four Seasons, Grand Hyatt, Hard Rock, The Plaza, Sheraton and Venetian popped up along the Cotai Strip. There’s seemingly no end in sight for development: In 2015 alone, the JW Marriott and The Ritz-Carlton opened within the Galaxy compound on the Cotai Strip, and the St. Regis is expected to debut in December in the nearby Sands complex. Highly anticipated arrivals the following year are an MGM Cotai resort and The Parisian. As this small sliver of land becomes saturated with big names, now is the time to book a trip to Macau and be among the first to experience how major U.S. companies are translating American luxury in the region. Turn the page for a visual guide to Asia’s most exciting up-and-coming destination. 50 BESPOKE CONCIERGE FALL 2015 51 CITY OF DREAMS Down the street from the Sands complex on the strip, the City of Dreams is hailed as a world-class entertainment hub—and it’s more than deserving of the title with activi- ties for every personality. In addition to bungee jumping and a sky- walk around the outer perimeter of the tower, travelers can experience an adrenaline rush during the 17-second SkyJump—a one-way vertical drop that offers a softer landing than a bungee swan dive. • Macau's Urban Image Production
The 4 th International Conference of the International Forum on Urbanism (IFoU) 2009 Amsterdam/Delft The New Urban Question – Urbanism beyond Neo-Liberalism MACAU’S URBAN IMAGE PRODUCTION BEFORE AND AFTER THE CREDIT CRUNCH Hendrik Tieben* *School of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Wong Foo Yuan Building, Hong Kong, China, Email:[email protected] ABSTRACT: Macau is one example of a rapidly transforming city in Asia. In competition with other cities in the region, it capitalizes on its role as the only place in China where casino gambling is legalised. Since the handover of the former Portuguese enclave to the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Macau has experienced various deregulations ranging from the end of its gambling monopoly, and the liberalisation of planning regulations, to the easing of travel restrictions. These liberalisation s were followed by an inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI) and visitors, and eventually led to a significant change of Macau’s urban landscape. Macau’s urban image construction can be discussed in the context of neo-liberalism under consideration of its specific characteristics as a free port, offshore haven and “free market” which however is manipulated by casino corporations, a small local elite, and the Chinese government in Beijing. The paper investigates how changes of Macau’s urban image are related to these characteristics and if the urban development after the credit crunch can have a more sustainable direction. KEYWORDS: Neo-liberalism, urban image, urban transformation, offshore-urbanism, Macau, China. 2020 3rd International Conference on Economic Management and Green Development (ICEMGD 2020) Study on the Sustainable Development of Macau’s Tourism Industry Zhixuan Li1,a,* 1Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Macau University of Science and Technology, Avenida Wai Long, Taipa, Macau, China a. [email protected] *corresponding author Keywords: culture heritage tourism, gambling tourism, sustainable development, SWOT Abstract: Macau, which is rich in tourism resources and has a single industrial structure, is paid more attention by local governments and local people. This paper introduces the present situation of the development of the four pillar industries of Macau tourism industry, studies it by using SWOT analysis method, and finally puts forward strategies in order to provide implications for the diversified and sustainable development of Macau tourism industry. 1. Introduction Located on the west coast of the Pearl River Delta, Macau is a small but crucial port in the economy and tourism. In recent years, with the strong support and promotion of the central government and the government of Macau Special Administrative Region, gaming tourism of Macau has developed well and occupies a paramount position in the economy of Macau. However, it cannot be ignored that with the continuous and vast expansion of gaming tourism in Macau, its negative impacts on Macau society are increasingly obvious. At the same time, gambling has been held or planned in neighboring countries and regions, especially Hainan, China, which means that mainland Chinese tourists will not need to apply for visas to experience gambling games. It will pose a great threat to the single- structured Macau economy.
