Sep 18, Sesana rated it it was ok Shelves: comicssuperhumans. A collection of Squirrel Girl's early appearances! Except that most of these issues are actually pretty dire. But hey, Squirrel Girl's first appearance is here, and that's really good, and parts of the summer special issue are good, too. Oct 20, Ma'Belle rated it liked it Shelves: marvelcomics-graphic-novelssuperheroes. Vastly darker and more disturbing, less upbeat and feminist than the more recent Squirrel Girl books so many of us know and love. SG often serves as an opening 4th wall-breaking narrator who offers trigger warnings, since the Great Lakes team largely deals with themes of death, suicide, depression, alcoholism, and abuse and body-shaming and queer-shaming - none of which are handled all that terrifically. I'm still giving it 3 stars because there were enough enjoyable and redeeming qualities to th Vastly darker and more disturbing, less upbeat and feminist than the more recent Squirrel Girl books so many of us know and love. I'm still giving it 3 stars because there were enough enjoyable and redeeming qualities to the stories. The team is meant to stand out in stark contrast to the well-known characters of the Marvel universe: failure, inaction, and being unremarkable or unmemorable are their defining characteristics. And yet they have a certain charm, and some of their members have quite endearing character arcs. SG fans will love getting to see how her reputation builds upon being able to single-handedly defeat the biggest, most powerful baddies, all of which is directly made into a point to rub in the faces of whiny fanboys. From memory, she beats Dr. Uatu, the Watcher shows up after she's incapacitated Thanos right after MODOK, all on the same trip to the store for toilet paper and egg nog just to verify for the canon that the Thanos seen beaten is the real deal. Still - do not consider this essential reading as part of Squirrel Girl's collected comics. View 1 comment. Mar 22, Cyndi rated it really liked it. Squirrel Girl is so cool! She is funny and takes some of the serious out of the Marvel Universe. Lots of fun! I don't even know where to begin! Aside from Ashley Crawford being one of the answers I always miss on that Sporcle quiz. That being said, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl & the Great Lakes Avengers were surprisingly interesting. They're a team of reject superheroes that tried to carve a space for themselves in the Great Lakes region and even that didn't work out. Hawkeye and Mockingbird were a part of them for a bit? I guess? Unless that was a joke as well. Let me say I k I don't even know where to begin! Let me say I know for a fact the humor in this book won't work for everyone. I don't mean that in a douchey "If you're not laughing, you're not smart enough to get the joke" kind of way. I The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl & the Great Lakes Avengers that in a "some sketches The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl & the Great Lakes Avengers aren't for everyone" kind of way. Let that sink in. Quite a bit of it was darkly humorous. Some of it was just "Why is this happening? Squirrel Girl is a one of a kind character but one that I genuinely think of to be happy and cheerful. So imagine my surprise when she's in a book that dives quickly into a tale about a superhero that keeps trying to commit suicide? There's quite a bit on the Great Lakes Avengers. I feel like everyone got sufficient development. We're introduced to Mr Immortal first. Everyone in his life keeps dying and he's doomed to live forever. That story was funny and then really sad. Like, I actually felt bad for him and Dinah and I wasn't expecting that. I don't know how to feel about Big Bertha. I don't even know if they were really trying to make a statement about body image with her because I personally can't appreciate anyone joking about eating disorders. It's a personal thing but yeah Dehmarr had my favorite Christmas feature. The story about his dad was relatable and interesting. It was full of dark humor as well. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl & the Great Lakes Avengers #1 - TPB (Issue) Her first appearance was in Marvel Super-Heroes vol. Her ability to communicate with squirrels is surprisingly effective and has allowed her to defeat major supervillains. In her solo series, the character splits her time between studying computer science at Empire State Universityand fighting crime both solo and as a member of the Avengers. Murray desired to write a lighthearted superhero story as opposed to the often heavily dramatic tales that were the norm in mainstream comics at the time, which gave rise to his creation of Squirrel Girl. Squirrel Girl" in Marvel Super-Heroes vol. The story also introduces her squirrel sidekick, Monkey Joe. Actually I created Squirrel Girl in script form without any artist input. Tom Morgan was originally going to draw it, but when he dropped out, I requested Ditko and got him. Ditko did a great job in bringing my baby to life. He invented that knuckle spike. I based Squirrel Girl ironically enough on a long—ago girlfriend who read comics and was into "critters"— wild animals of all types. Coincidentally, she was a big Ditko fan. I think I got the idea because I had a bunch of squirrels running around my roof and sometimes coming in through my open bedroom window and inspiration struck.

But maybe the world is finally ready for… A super villain mob led by the nasty Nain Rouge is terrorizing Detroit, and Councilman Dick Snerd isn’t lifting a finger to stop them. The Great Lakes Avengers tried to take on Nain Rouge at his bar, but busted up the place and got arrested instead. Now Flatman, Big Bertha, Doorman and their newest recruit Good Boy are banned from super-heroics--but that didn’t stop them from finding out that Nain Rouge IS Councilman Dick Snerd, and it also didn’t stop Good Boy from kind of accidentally almost killing him a little bit. • Substandard Superheroes
SUBSTANDAR D SUPERHEROES Copyright 2021 Shane Rogers Entertainment Midnight Facts for Insomniacs Podcast Transcript (Note: transcript consists of episode outline) Ok, so we could spend this entire episode making fun of superheroes that were created intentionally as jokes. Many of which were hideously offensive. Like Marvel’s big Bertha, a supermodel with the ability to conjure fat from amother dimension and transform from a thin, beautiful woman into into an obese giant. When she wanted to return to her model form, Bertha would vomit out the extra weight. Yup, a bulimic superhero. Or the Marvel villain “leather boy,” the BDSM enthusiast with assless chaps and zero super powers who had replied to a classified ad, hoping to join the Great Lakes Avengers because he thought it was an S&M fetish group. He also famously killed Monkey Joe, one of squirrel girl’s favorite squirrel sidekicks. Did I mention squirrel girl? Or “fat man the human flying saucer.” You get the idea. There’s a lot of nonsense and silliness, so we’re going to focus on superheroes who were intended to be badass and just misfired. Except for one. Any comic book nerd worth his spandex will be deeply annoyed if I don’t bring up perhaps the most famously bizarre superhero ever committed to paper. Arm Fall Off Boy was an actual DC superhero whose superpower was the ability to rip off one of his own limbs and use it to bludgeon enemies. And again I’m going to mention the caveat that, while he WAS an actual superhero and did appear in a comic, he was clearly not a serious attempt at a real superhero.

Burch Laura Johnsen State University of New York at Oswego Binghamton University, State University of New York We examined the visualization of male and female superheroes, paying attention to physical dimensions and costuming that accentuated hyper-masculine or hyper- feminine features such as shoulder-to-waist ratio, jawlines, upper body muscularity, waist-to-hip ratio, and breast morphology. Body mass index (BMI) data were collected for 3,752 Marvel comic characters. Males were on average “obese” whereas females averaged at the low end of normal weight. The male higher body mass was caused by extreme upper body muscularity, with male shoulder-to-waist ratios far above human limits. This is in stark contrast to low weight female superhero bodies with far lower waist-to-hip ratios than average humans. The endocrine markers that are exaggerated in these depictions create supernormal sexual stimuli for each sex. Public Significance Statement An examination of over 3,000 comic book characters and hundreds of drawings found that male characters were huge and well beyond the normal range for shoulder-to-waist ratio, resembling and exaggerating the Captain Dorito meme (the concept that Captain America, as played by Chris Evans, has the shoulder-to-waist ratio of a triangular Dorito corn chip).
