ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM For the Year ended 30th June, 1970 To His Excellency The Governor: The Trustees of The Australian Museum have the honour to submit their !16th Report for the year ended 30th June, 1970. Mr W. H. Maze, M.Sc., was elected President of the Board of Trustees at the Annual Meeting. 9ose co-operation with Taronga Zoo, the National Parks and Wildlife Service Macquarie UruveCSlty, and the N.S.W. State Fisheries has continued. ' The strong s~ppo~ by. th~ Gove_rnment •. which has enabled the Museum to become a sound research and educational. mstttut10n of mternat10nal standing has continued during the year and the Tr~stees thank the. P.remter and ~reasurer , the Deputy Premier and the Minister for Education and Sctence, and the M1ruster for Pubbc Works for their help. The Public Service Board has continued to support the Museum in staff matters. INTRODUCTION MUSEUMS AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FRANK HAMILTON T ALBOT, Director There is at present an upsurge of interest in museums, the reasons for which are not quite clear. The Australian Museum will pass through its displays some 500,000 people this year, some 25 per cent of the population of Sydney. The number of visitors is increasing faster than the population increase. The same has occurred in Great Britain. During a recent exhibition over 1,200 children a day came to the Australian Museum in classes during school time. We now have 5 teachers who give formal classes to some 30,000-40,000 children a year and about 100,000 children visit the museum with their own teachers. If we look at the total picture in Australia, with nine State museums of technology and of natural science, we see a system handling the equivalent of 30 per cent of the population each year. It is quite clear we have an educational force of real potential. In addition in all the museums there is direct contact with hundreds of thousands of citizens through inquiries-one of the Australian Museum departments alone has 4,000 inquiries a year.

  • Chinese Public Diplomacy: the Rise of the Confucius Institute / Falk Hartig
    Chinese Public Diplomacy This book presents the first comprehensive analysis of Confucius Institutes (CIs), situating them as a tool of public diplomacy in the broader context of China’s foreign affairs. The study establishes the concept of public diplomacy as the theoretical framework for analysing CIs. By applying this frame to in- depth case studies of CIs in Europe and Oceania, it provides in-depth knowledge of the structure and organisation of CIs, their activities and audiences, as well as problems, chal- lenges and potentials. In addition to examining CIs as the most prominent and most controversial tool of China’s charm offensive, this book also explains what the structural configuration of these Institutes can tell us about China’s under- standing of and approaches towards public diplomacy. The study demonstrates that, in contrast to their international counterparts, CIs are normally organised as joint ventures between international and Chinese partners in the field of educa- tion or cultural exchange. From this unique setting a more fundamental observa- tion can be made, namely China’s willingness to engage and cooperate with foreigners in the context of public diplomacy. Overall, the author argues that by utilising the current global fascination with Chinese language and culture, the Chinese government has found interested and willing international partners to co- finance the CIs and thus partially fund China’s international charm offensive. This book will be of much interest to students of public diplomacy, Chinese politics, foreign policy and international relations in general. Falk Hartig is a post-doctoral researcher at Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany, and has a PhD in Media & Communication from Queensland Univer- sity of Technology, Australia.

Box 1015, Armidale N.S.W. 2350 Summary The plumages, age criteria and moult of the Little Eagle Hieraaetus morphnoides were investigated from museum skins, captive birds and field studies in north-east New South Wales. Characteristics of juveniles, second-year birds and adults of both morphs are discussed: these relate mainly to the colour of the head and underparts (juveniles more rufous than adults of their respective morphs); the amount of black streaking on the crown, crest and underparts (heaviest in adults); the colour and contrast of the median upper-wing coverts and scapulars (paler and more prominent in adults); the presence of a uniform translucent trailing edge to the wings and tail in juveniles; and the colour of soft parts (irides changing from dark brown to reddish brown or orange-brown; cere, gape and feet tending to fade from cream or pale yellow to off-white). First-year birds show no wing or tail moult until c. 12 months old. Older birds show descendent, interrupted, symmetrical primary moult and convergent, symmetrical retrix moult, or jumbled and sometimes asymmetrical primary and rectrix moult. A rare, previously undescribed rufous morph in adults is a 'red' version of the dark morph but with the under­ wing pattern of the light morph. The proportion of dark and light birds varies geographically, with the highest proportion of dark birds on the humid east coast of Australia.

Box 84, Lyneham, A.C.T., 2602, and JEFF JOLLY, 3 Puckridge Place, Port Lincoln, South Australia, 5606 Introduction Interspecific conflict was observed on a number of occasions during an investigation into the breeding biology and diet of the Peregrine Falcon in parts of S.A. and N.S. W. These anecdotes and some similar obser­ vations on other Australian falcons are discussed. Interspecific Conflict in the Peregrine Falcon 1. Conflict with Congeners: Peregrines commonly interact aggresively with medium and large-sized falcons in other areas of the world. Cade (1960) for example, noted that 'Next to eagles, peregrines are most ready to attack gyrfalcons' (p. 200) . Ogden (1972) and Nelson (1969) describe Peregrines in aerial combat with Prairie Falcons Falco mexicanus at nest sites. Only one example of conflict with congeners was observed in our study areas during breeding. A pair of nesting Brown Falcons F. berigora repeatedly attacked a female Peregrine near Port Lincoln, South Austra­ li a, and eventually drove it away. However Brown Falcons nested at th e base of one Peregrine nest site and were frequently seen near other sites but no conflict was observed in our presence. Walsh (1978) did see Pere­ grines attack Brown Falcons although they were not consistent in their attacks. Although the terrorists' motives remain obscure, reactions worldwide tragically demonstrate that millions deeply resent what they perceive as disrespect. I hope this article illustrates how thoroughly the demand for respect suffuses intergroup relations and how urgently we need to understand and address thatpowerful emotion. I. WHY Do THE NATIONS So FURIOUSLY RAGE TOGETHER? Early in 1996 an unusual conflict convulsed Israel. The antagonists were neither Jews and Arabs, nor religious and secular. Instead, the division was racial. An estimated 10,000 Ethiopian Jews protested violently against government rejection of their blood donations because the risk of AIDS was 50 times higher than it was in the general population. Demanding the Health Minister's resignation, demonstrators carried banners declaring "Our blood is as red as yours and we are just as Jewish as you are" and "Apartheid! The 2nd Holocaust! Genoceid! in the Holy-Land."' The director of an Ethiopian community health project expostulated: "What connects us?2 It is blood.

    Canberra bird notes Vol.2 No. 1 January 1972 Price 25c. Hoping that members are still generous with their money after the Christmas spending spree, I would like to commend to them a worthy cause. This is the K.A. Hindwood Memorial Fund, which was set up in Sydney in memory of the late Keith Hindwood. Keith was a C.O.G. member, and many of us knew him personally. It is hoped that enough money will be raised to establish a Bird Studies Centre, with library, record material and similar facilities for ornithologists, particularly amateurs. The response has so far been good, but more support is needed. Vol. 2, No.1 -2- January 1972 THE BIRDS AT PULLETOP Val Jenkins Peter Gowland Tony Stokes Pulletop Nature Reserve, formerly part of the property "Acres" at Yenda, lies 15 miles from Rankin Springs on the Griffith/Rankin Springs road. From 1953 onwards, Dr H.J. Frith carried out studies of the Mallee Fowl in the area. Progressive land-clearing led to about 350 acres being 'reserved from sale’ on December 23, 1960 for the 'preservation of fauna(Mallee Fowl)'. The reserve itself was dedicated in the N.S.W. Government Gazette No.5 of January 18, 1963 as 'The Pulletop Faunal Reserve No.22', the area being described as: 'Land District - Narrandera; Shire - Carrathool; County Cooper; Parish Pulletop, being portion 46 of 358 acres and 2 roods.’ On September 4 1967, in accordance with the National Parks Wildlife Act, the reserve was renamed 'Pulletop Nature Reserve.’ There have been no additions to the original 358 acres, and it is difficult to see how there could be as the surrounding countryside is given over to pasture and wheat.

  • The Pidgeons of Cullompton
    The PIDGEONs of Cullompton It is probable (but not proven) that John Pidgeon was born at Cotleigh in 1723, the son of Richard Pidgeon (see The Pidgeons of Cotleigh family tree). At least five generations of John PIDGEONs were millers in Cullompton, Devon . The first John PIDGEON married Joan, the daughter of Thomas and Mary BOWERS. Seven of their nine children survived and married. Their three daughters married into the ELLICOTT , RICE and FACEY families. Two sons were married to the same woman (presumably, the second marrying her after the first had died), while a third son travelled north to Cheshire and sired the PIDGEONs of Stockport . Apart from those of Stockport and the descendants of one great-grandson (including the CANN family) who all emigrated to the USA, most of John & Joan’s descendants remained in Devon, although no Pidgeons remain there, today.
