The US’s opinion of a lessening of the Indochina war’s side effects on Thailand is evident in our government’s decision to cut military troops stationed there, while Burma’s troubles are apparently just beginning, as communist insurgents plague the countryside. At the end of March, the US government announced a cutback of 10.000 soldiers and a reduction in its B-S2s. The move, to be completed by the end of the year, indicates faith in North Viet Nam’s Hrsm promise not to carry out a major offensive in Thailand. This leaves 27.000 Americans in the country as a standby force. The action also presages an attempt by Thais and Americans to reduce the US’s huge profile in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, Thailand is trying to 'REALLY! I THOUGHT WE WERE ABOVE ALL THAT!' ameliorate relations with People’s China, and the Pentagon is reducing its overseas spending. Myers, professor of chemical engineering at UCSB, and C.O. Bennett, has just been published by McGraw-Hill. The book deals with the principles and applications of fluid mechanics, thermal energy transfer, and diffusion of matter. "Although the applications are found primarily in the chemical-process industries," Myers said, "they extend to many other fields, such as power generation, pollution control, meteorology and the behavior of living syste m s." Myers came to UCSB in 1966 from Purdue University as the first chairman of UCSB's department of chemical and nuclear engineering.
