Bands like The Grateful Dead, Big Brother And The Holding Component Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Mother Earth, The Steve Miller Reviews Band, The Electric Flag and Moby Group adopted the freewheeling spirit of Editorial the Beatnik culture and its folk-based structures. Additionally, the various Reader Feedback roots backgrounds and musical genres were intermingled in the evolving Best of the Year scene. At the Fillmore, it was not unusual to see a jazz great like Miles Davis sharing a bill with The Grateful Dead. In 1967 The Monterey Pop Festival connected San Francisco rock to the larger national culture. One of the bands at the festival was Jefferson Airplane. Formed in the mid 1960’s, the core members Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen merged their blues and folk backgrounds into a psychedelic rock sound. Their first release, The Jefferson Airplane Takes Off (1966) included songs like “It’s No Secret” and “Coming Up The Years” which expanded their local fan base. In 1967, there was a confluence of events that lifted the Jefferson Airplane to stardom. Bill Graham became the group’s manager. They appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival and singer Grace Slick (Great Society) became a member. She brought two songs “Somebody To Love” and “White Rabbit” that appeared on the breakthrough album, “Surrealistic Pillow” (1967). In 1969, The Airplane hit a cultural zenith with appearances at Woodstock and Altamont. Later that year, Volunteers was released. RELATED POSTS In Volunteers, the band found a collective voice, especially in the volatile JENNIFER political landscape that tore the country apart in 1968 and 1969. Kaukonen NIELSEN: shines on lead vocals, acoustic and effect-laden (wah-wah) electric guitar. Symphony No. The backup vocals are uncanny, a slight delay call and response with 5; Symphony attention to counterpoint. No. 6 … In another change of pace, “The Farm” embraces another countercultural $ March 23, theme, back to nature. Grace Slick demonstrates impressive suppleness in 2015 embracing country vocals and the affirmative chorus (“…Oh so good, livin’ on the farm…”). POPULAR POSTS The gentle rhythm basks in the fluent, organic vocal dialogue between Balin and Slick. The atmospherics are complemented by the searing BRAHMS: Piano tonality of Kaukonen’s electric guitar. Grace executes some sustained vocal Concerto No. 2; notes that add to the ambiance. On “Eskimo Blue Day” the band exhibits Piano some edgy folk/jazz elements with interesting timing. Jack Casady’s bass Sonata … sustains the driving force and Hopkins’ piano adds a muscular prominence. This is a fuller studio aesthetic. Publisher: Eric Olsen REVIEW Music Review: Jefferson Starship - Jefferson's Tree Of Liberty Written by David Bowling Published August 31, 2008 Life is good as founding member Paul Kantner remains in control of The Jefferson Starship. Long time cohort David Freiberg is still around as is guitarist Mark Aguilar. Cathy Richardson is now the lead female vocalist. She starred in the off Broadway production about Janis Joplin’s life. Richardson’s voice is powerful and pure but is closer to a Grace Slick sound than Joplin’s, which should come as no surprise. Even Marty Balin joins the Starship for a couple of tunes. Jefferson’s Tree Of Liberty finds the Starship traveling in a new and unique musical direction. Succinctly put, this is a folk album. Songs such as “Pastures Of Plenty” by Woody Guthrie, “Chimes Of Freedom” by Bob Dylan, and “I Ain’t Marching Anymore” by Phil Ochs are all presented in classic vocal form. Kantner and The Jefferson Starship can’t quite escape their rock ‘n’ roll roots as the instrumental background veers from the classic folk formula. Think the Weavers in rock mode. The first track sets the tone for most of the album. The old Weavers tune, “Wasn’t That A Time,” features the voices of Kantner, Freiberg, and Richardson. Richardson provides a wonderful balance on most of the harmonies contained on the album.
