  • Chapter 1501
Chapter 1501 A man and a woman at the table, no matter their looks, temperament, and clothes at home, they all looked very luxurious and decent. The man looked a little haggard, and his face and lips had lost his normal blood color. At first sight, he was a chronically ill, or even dying person. But the woman next to him was very well maintained and very beautiful. Her appearance was seven points similar to Sara‟s, and she seemed to be in her 30s. Charlie recognized the two at a glance, they were Uncle Philip, whom he had known since childhood, and his wife, Aunt Lenan. Just when Charlie recognized the two of them, the two also recognized him! Philip‟s whole expression was extremely shocked. His face was already very thin. At this time, his eyes widened, trembling and trying to say something, but he seemed to be in his throat. Miss Lenan, who was on the side, was also dumbfounded. She stood up, pointing at Charlie with one finger and covering her mouth with one hand: “You…you…you are… ..You are Wade…Are you Charlie???” Charlie‟s nose was sour, and he sighed softly, and said with a trembling voice: “Aunt Lenan, I am Charlie…” After speaking, he looked at Philip who was trembling and unable to speak, and said in a trembling voice: “Uncle…Hello! And Aunt Lenan, how are you!” Philip looked at him and muttered, “Are you really Charlie?” Charlie nodded seriously and said, “Uncle, it‟s me, I‟m Charlie, do you still recognize me?” “Recognize…recognize…” Philip wiped away tears and said: “You are the same as your father when he was young, and you are similar to the photos of your grandfather when he was young… ….” With that, he stood up laboriously, and then walked towards Charlie.

This growth is largely the result of educational migration, positioning many Chinese in Japan as student- migrants. Based on 20 months’ ethnographic fieldwork in Ikebukuro, Tokyo’s unofficial Chinatown, this paper explores the ways in which the phenomenology of the city informs the desire for integration amongst young Chinese living in Japan.

“One Movie, Two Versions”: Post-1997 Hong Kong Cinema in Mainland China Hilary Hongjin HE – University of Western Sydney Abstract A large number of Hong Kong movies theatrically released in Mainland China are more or less variations of the original Hong Kong edition due to the market entry requirements and the censorship in PRC. This paper seeks to explore the interrelationship between the “one movie, two versions” phenomenon and the “one country, two systems” policy: to what extent is the long-existing multi-version practice influenced and scaled up by the unprecedented formula? And how does the phenomenon reflect the transitional nature of post-1997 Hong Kong cinema and affect its future direction? I will argue that “two-versioned” Hong Kong films are a result of economic collaboration and the ideological divergence between Hong Kong and PRC, the two ends under “two systems”. Moreover, with the illegal digital dissemination of the original movies by such means as pirate DVDs and Internet downloads, the control in PRC has become porous in the digital era which has further complicated the problem of the ideological confrontation of the “two systems”. In light of that, apart from elucidating the context, causes and impacts of the phenomenon, the interlocking relationship between market, censorship and piracy will be explored against the backdrop of the marketisation of the movie industry in China. Note: An earlier version of this article was first published in 2010 in the Working Paper Series, David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University. Introduction The “one movie, two versions” syndrome is the most attention-getting phenomenon or problem in post-1997 Hong Kong cinema’s exploration of the new-claimed Chinese mainland market.

The Cosmopolitan Dream Transnational Asian Masculinities Series Editors: Derek Hird (Lancaster University) and Geng Song (University of Hong Kong) The first book series in the world on this topic, Transnational Asian Masculinities explores the representations and lived realities of Asian masculinities in their transnational dimensions. Books in this series use interdisciplinary perspectives and interrogate diverse textual, visual, and ethnographic materials. They illumi- nate the specificities of Asian masculinities in global contexts and question some of the assumptions of Euro-American theorizing on masculinities. By approach- ing Asianness through ethnicity, nationality, and location—encompassing men’s, women’s, queer, and trans masculinities—this series unpacks the tangled assem- blages of local and transnational circulations of people, ideas, and objects that have shaped Asian masculinities in all eras. Lam Institute for East-West Studies (LEWI), a consortium with 28 member universities, to foster dialogue among scholars in the field of East-West studies. Globalisation has multiplied and accelerated inter-cultural, inter-ethnic, and inter-religious encounters, intentionally or not. In a world where time and place are increasingly compressed and interaction between East and West grows in density, numbers, and spread, East-West studies has gained a renewed mandate. LEWI’s Working Paper Series provides a forum for the speedy and informal exchange of ideas, as scholars and academic institutions attempt to grapple with issues of an inter-cultural and global nature. Circulation of this series is free of charge. Comments should be addressed directly to authors.
