Coalition Senators' Dissenting Report 1.1 As a nation we are increasingly reliant on efficient, inexpensive and convenient aviation services. This is hardly surprising when you consider that our population is spread over such a vast land mass. 1.2 Aviation is a dynamic industry that has faced many challenges over the past decades since the introduction of the QSA in 1992. In Australia the market is highly competitive and presently capacity is saturated which has resulted in lower yields and affected the profitability of our carriers. 1.3 From a passenger’s perspective, the competitive tension between Qantas and Virgin Australia has resulted in a high quality product being delivered at a lower price with increased destinations and often with more convenient schedules. 1.4 Both Virgin Australia and Qantas are clearly excellent Australian airlines which contribute significantly to the economy, regional communities and tourism and have both shown a willingness to assist Australians in times of crisis. 1.5 Airlines also operate in an environment of increasing higher fuel costs, a relatively high Australian dollar compared to previous decades and significant capital expenditure requirements in an effort to operate the most modern and fuel efficient aircraft fleets. 1.6 Additionally, the carbon tax has added significantly to the costs of operating Australian domestic airlines. In the 2013-14 financial year the carbon tax drove up operating expenses at Qantas by $106 million and $48 million at Virgin Australia. It also cost Regional Express (Rex) $2.4 million. 1.7 The cumulative effect of all of these factors has led to an environment where both Australia’s major domestic carriers have announced first half losses; Qantas of $252 million and Virgin Australia of $84 million. -

Buresala Training School, Fiji From Journal of Pacific Adventist History. Buresala Training School, Fiji RAYMOND WILKINSON Raymond Wilkinson, Ed.D. (Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA) was born to missionary parents and grew up in Fiji. He was educated at Longburn College, Massey University New Zealand, and Avondale College Australia. With wife Ruth, his Church service involved teaching and educational administration in the South Pacific Islands. He retired 1994 but since then has enjoyed volunteer service in the islands. Now married to Lola, Raymond has four adult children and eight grandchildren. Buresala Training School was the first educational institution designed to train workers that the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church operated in Fiji (and, in fact, the South Pacific Islands region). From its opening in February 1905 until the transfer of its programs, in 1940, to what became Fulton College, it prepared a steady stream of ministers, teachers, workers’ spouses, and dedicated church laypeople. In that way, it supported the advancement of the church in Fiji and also in areas of Polynesia and Melanesia, including New Guinea. Early Plans John I. Tay and his wife, Hannah, Americans, were the first Seventh-day Adventist missionaries to Fiji. They arrived by the first voyage of the SDA missionary ship Pitcairn in 1891. Sadly, Tay died on January 8, 1892, after only five months in Fiji.1 In 1894 Americans John Cole and his wife arrived, and they were joined in May 1896 by the American John Fulton and his family.2 John Cole returned to America in 1897 because of ill health, and Fulton was then joined, in 1898, by the American Calvin Parker and his wife.3 Fulton and Parker began visiting Suvavou (New Suva), a village across the harbor from Suva, and one of their first converts was Pauliasi Bunoa, who had been a teacher, an ordained minister, and a missionary to Papua New Guinea for the Wesleyan church. -

NEWS RELEASE Introducing oneworld connect — a New Way for Airlines to Link to the World’s Premier Alliance 6/3/2018 Fiji Airways to be rst oneworld connect partner; talks progressing with other carriers from around the world SYDNEY — oneworld is launching a new platform for linking up with the world’s premier airline alliance, enabling customers to enjoy more services and benets across an even more extensive global network. The rst airline to join in the new capacity as a oneworld connect partner will be Fiji Airways. A date will be announced at a later time for when Fiji Airways will start oering oneworld connect services and benets (see below). In the meantime, it is business as usual. oneworld connect is the rst new membership platform unveiled by oneworld since the alliance was originally announced 20 years ago. oneworld is in discussion with other carriers interested in participating in the program, from various parts of the world, including the Americas, Asia-Pacic and Europe. Each oneworld connect partner will need to have a minimum of three oneworld members as its sponsors to be initiated into the program. The initial oneworld sponsors of Fiji Airways will be all four of oneworld’s founding members – American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacic and Qantas.
