Collection Description Biographical Note Linus Parker was born on a farm near Vienna in Oneida County, New York on April 23, 1829. During the year of 1845 Linus Parker worked with an older brother at a store in New Orleans, and in 1846 left to serve as a soldier in the Mexican War. After that, he began to study law, but was convinced to join the Methodist ministry. In March of 1849 he supplied the church on Algiers Street, and in May was licensed to preach. He joined the Louisiana conference and moved up through the ranks to become an elder in 1853. That same year he married Sallie F. Sale who died of yellow fever three months later. After five years he married a second time, Ellen K. Burruss. They had three sons, one of whom later became Dean of the Candler School of Theology, Franklin N. Parker. Manuscript Collection No. 091 Parker held many different appointments within the Methodist church, all in Louisiana: Lake Providence (1849), Shreveport (1850-51), Felicity Street, New Orleans (1852-54), Carondelet Street, New Orleans (1855-57), New Orleans District (1858), Felicity Street, New Orleans (1859-61), Shreveport (1862-63), Caldo Circuit (1864-65), and Felicity Street, New Orleans (1866-69). Parker was editor of the Christian Advocate from 1870-81. He also was a delegate to General Conferences; in the years 1866, 1874, 1878, and 1882. In 1882 he was elevated to the episcopacy and then gave episcopal supervision to the Texas, Missouri, North Carolina Mississippi, and Maryland conferences. Parker died of an apparent cerebral hemorrhage on March 5, 1885 in New Orleans. Scope and Content Note This collection is composed of two series. Series I, which makes up the bulk of the collection, contains sermons. This Series is further divided into unbound sermons and bound sermons. The unbound sermons Parker wrote and delivered from the years 1853 to 1884. There is a gap during the years 1862 to 1869, and 1880-1884. The five volumes of bound sermons cover the years 1852-1853; 1857; 1858-1859; and [1863]. The second and final series is Miscellaneous, and it contains a letter from Franklyn N. Parker to his mother, Ellen K. Buress Parker, lists of pastors and their districts, minutes of two conference meetings and receipts. Young: Secession as a Moral Imperative: White Southerners and Evangelical Theology (Under the direction of William L. Barney) This dissertation explores the ways in which white Southerners used evangelical theology to rationalize secession as a moral imperative. The secession of eleven states from the Union in 1860 and 1861 ripped asunder its political bond between the federal government and the individual state legislatures. Yet the rhetoric of evangelical Christianity present in the political documents of secession begs the question of how white Southerners connected a political choice with their religious sensibilities. Even if politicians appropriated religious language for their own purposes, they did so because they spoke to an audience that engaged with the world on religious terms. This dissertation eXamines five specific aspects of Southern evangelical theology as each was used in the context of secession. Evangelical Christians did not always agree on a common rationale (or even on theological matters), but the aggregate of their debates reflect the depth of the Southern sense of sectionalism and the eXtent to which religious fervor spilled into the political sphere. Firstly, Southerners viewed their region as an eXample to the world of an ideal Christian society, a testimony brought into sharper relief with secession.

Clinton Fields Written for Home-Coming Day The Nineteenth of August, 1984 COOL SPRINGS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH PREFACE This privilege to bring together in a short time - the history of Cool Springs Methodist Church - has been a glorifying experience. It seemed unsurrnountable, but with the help of many local church members, and others, the task has been gratifying. The actual problems in putting together a historical sketch has been well-expressed by Rev. John Kline, pastor of the Carthage Methodist Church (1945-49) who did a historical sketch for the Carthage Methodist Church in celebration of its one-hundred years in 1952: The history of a local Methodist church should be easy to trace and write, but, ..as a mater of fact, such is not the case. John Wesley kept records of many matters. He urged his Methodist Societies to keep careful records. The Methodist law-book, the Descipline, still gives explicit instructions for the writing of reports and keeping books - on the levels of the General Conference, the Jurisdictional Conference, the Annual Conference, the District Conference, the Quarterly Conference, have been made, with varying degrees of skill and completeness. But the great flaw in this system has been the failure to designate, at least with respect to the Quarterly Conference and the Local Church Conference, a definite place where the record-books shall be deposited and kept, for future use of those who need them. True, the Recording Steward is directed to keep the Quarterly Conference Record-Book, and the Secretary of the Church Conference is designated as the custodian of the records of that Conference.

Crown, Jr. Description and Notes A-JAC-MS-E01 JAC-MS-E01 JAC-MS-E01 The Jackson provisional markings The 3-cent provisional marking is known revalued for the 5-cent and 10-cent Confederate rates. Therefore, it has been assumed the 3-cent marking was also used as a provisional before 1 June 1861. There is no recorded “Paid 5” stampless marking for Jackson. This and the large number of 5- cent provisionals indicates the provisional marking may have been used to mark both mail paid at time of mailing (stampless) and to mark provisional envelopes This dual use of the 5-cent provisional marking is reinforced by the marking’s use on a folded letter and a cover with “charge box” docketing.
