Collection Description Biographical Note Linus Parker was born on a farm near Vienna in Oneida County, New York on April 23, 1829. During the year of 1845 Linus Parker worked with an older brother at a store in New Orleans, and in 1846 left to serve as a soldier in the Mexican War. After that, he began to study law, but was convinced to join the Methodist ministry. In March of 1849 he supplied the church on Algiers Street, and in May was licensed to preach. He joined the Louisiana conference and moved up through the ranks to become an elder in 1853. That same year he married Sallie F. Sale who died of yellow fever three months later. After five years he married a second time, Ellen K. Burruss. They had three sons, one of whom later became Dean of the Candler School of Theology, Franklin N. Parker. Manuscript Collection No. 091 Parker held many different appointments within the Methodist church, all in Louisiana: Lake Providence (1849), Shreveport (1850-51), Felicity Street, New Orleans (1852-54), Carondelet Street, New Orleans (1855-57), New Orleans District (1858), Felicity Street, New Orleans (1859-61), Shreveport (1862-63), Caldo Circuit (1864-65), and Felicity Street, New Orleans (1866-69). Parker was editor of the Christian Advocate from 1870-81. He also was a delegate to General Conferences; in the years 1866, 1874, 1878, and 1882. In 1882 he was elevated to the episcopacy and then gave episcopal supervision to the Texas, Missouri, North Carolina Mississippi, and Maryland conferences. Parker died of an apparent cerebral hemorrhage on March 5, 1885 in New Orleans. Scope and Content Note This collection is composed of two series. Series I, which makes up the bulk of the collection, contains sermons. This Series is further divided into unbound sermons and bound sermons. The unbound sermons Parker wrote and delivered from the years 1853 to 1884. There is a gap during the years 1862 to 1869, and 1880-1884. The five volumes of bound sermons cover the years 1852-1853; 1857; 1858-1859; and [1863]. The second and final series is Miscellaneous, and it contains a letter from Franklyn N. Parker to his mother, Ellen K. Buress Parker, lists of pastors and their districts, minutes of two conference meetings and receipts.
