Chalong Police Deputy Superintendent Lt Col Narong Laksanawimon told the Gazette that more than 20 officers from Rawai Municipality and local residents are joining police efforts in patrolling the streets, reporting any suspicious activities they see directly to officers on patrol at the time. A “neighborhood watch center” has also been set up in the Khok Tanode community in Chalong. The center, located near Ladthiwanaram Temple (Wat Tai), has 10 volunteers, supervised by police. “We will ask for more officers from Chalong Munici- pality to join the campaign,” Lt Col Narong said. “After just two weeks, it already seems as if the number of robberies in the area is decreasing. So far the center’s efforts have led to arrests in five cases,” he added. The move to enlist civilian help aims to curb rising crime in the area. One recent incident involved a couple being robbed in Soi Sammakee 2, in Rawai, on June 29 by a man wielding a machete. “The man was robbed last Friday near Lion Muay Thai by a guy and a girl who approached him on a motorbike. However, the board’s reexamination of the issue reveals the aforementioned strategy can be elevated to be policy-level strategy, the process of which includes setting up the clear strategic targets and public services, as well as considering the differences between service areas. It has also been suggested that personnel in those areas should be the ones coming up with action plans, to successfully reach the ultimate outcome1. Having studied the fundamental patterns of Thai Maternal and Child Health Network’s project management according to national context, the board has established an expansion model, which foresees the project expanding into various other areas, being carried out in a direction towards the expected outcome. Establishing a strategy map in each area begins with strengthening work forces in the provincial level. Since the public health system is directed by Office of Provincial Chief Medical Officer, which provides management and supports to community and district health promotion hospitals, not the general and regional hospitals. Thus, if there is to be an integration of both health promotion and treatment, an operational conference is essential. The conference would allow idea sharing and discussion between the multidisciplinary involved, namely obstetricians, pediatricians, general practitioners, registered nurses (from prenatal clinics, delivery rooms, emergency rooms, neonatal intensive care unit, neonatal wards and follow-up clinics, etc.), as well as public health technical officers, social medicine officers from community hospitals, general hospitals and regional hospitals.

    Chapter 3 Thai Traditional and Alternative Medical Services Systems Chapter The systems of Thai traditional medicine (TTM) and indigenous medicine 3 (IM) services have been fundamental in the popular or civil sector’s health system for a long time with Buddhist temples (or wat) being the centres of TTM instruction or teaching/learning as well as treatment of illnesses. The story about TTM was first evidenced in the directory of feudal status, or sakdina, enacted by King Trailokanat in 1455 for civil servants in various departments such as Departments of Medical Services (Krom Phaettaya), Pharmacy (Krom Phaettaya Rongphra-osot), Internal Medicine (Krom Moh Ya), Massage Therapy (Krom Moh Nuad). Such systems had been continually conserved until the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) when a medical school was established in 1900; and both TTM and modern medicine disciplines were taught during the first phase of the school’s operations. Later on during the reign of King Rama VI, the TTM teaching and learning at the medical school was discontinued in 1915. However, some TTM practitioners assembled and got many TTM associations established for teaching or training in TTM, using an individual teacher-student, or mentor-apprentice, approach and providing TTM services for patients in all regions of the country.
