I wanted to focus about crucial issues of our time: social media, commerce and online world, that is perfectly mirrored in the real one. Virtual and real world are not two separate things anymore, but they come together and influence one another. Chinese social media landscape could seem mysterious to those who are not experts of the field and don’t know Chinese language. My paper wants to investigate the broad context of Chinese social media, pointing out differences and similarities with Western ones. This essay is split into three chapters. In the first chapter, I pursued a parallelism between most trendy Western social media and the respective ones in China. In the first instance, we found that that even though the presence of censorship in China, Chinese internet doesn’t represent a “desert” at all, but, on the contrary, its paradigm owns much higher numbers than the ones we are used to: many more social media, websites and millions users daily active online through their favourite instrument: smartphone. In the following paragraphs, we see that “our”: Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram are replaced by: QQ, Weibo, WeChat, Douyin and the broad Chinese e- commerce system that provides on its platforms, both a social media part and an e- commerce one. Users can: exchange opinions, read reviews, post pictures and, at the same time, complete purchase processes. The second chapter aims to analyze social media usage within interpersonal relationships and, especially, how Chinese traditional values have been reshaped and changed, with the rise of modernity and the opening to the world. The last paragraph starts to outline the characteristics of business oriented social media usage and how companies can benefit by using them in their strategies, being aware of potential risks and failure that wrong strategies could lead. 6 In the last two subparagraphs, I take on two examples of social media marketing strategy undertaken by luxury brands. It follows that, the American brand Coach, thanks to an adequate and designed strategy, that involved the use of valid instruments such as: promotion trough blogger and influencer, respecting the target market and launching prices and contests, successfully entered Chinese market. The strategy undertaken by Dolce&Gabbana in November 2018, was a total failure: ignoring cultural distance barriers, absence of sensitivity and superficiality in thinking that they could operate in Chinese market without a precise strategy, led big troubles to the brand company. In the third chapter, I describe the figure of influencer, better known in China as KOL, key opinion leader. The natural habitat of this personalities is social media and they are people who, with the rise of blogs, started to set up personal accounts on which they used to discuss about their daily lives and/or about certain topics, trough the use of: articles, videos and photos. Since the very beginning, they started to catch other users’ attention, increasing their fame day by day, until the point of becoming actual online celebrities. The figure of KOL in China is not something peripheral, but it is fundamental within brands’ marketing strategies, that want to break into the market, raise products’ awareness and increase sales, even more if it is brand’s first entrance in Chinese market. Successful KOLs are people who managed to establish a powerful community, based on reciprocal trust. KOL’s trustworthiness has to be the base of his/her job, and, in fact, he/she should deal partnerships only with brands that share his/her same values and promote products that he/she would buy firsthand. Chinese most glaring KOLs’ figures in fashion field, as described in the last paragraphs of chapter 3, are, for example: Becky Li, Gogoboi, Mr. Bags. They are famous for their highly active and responsive community and their fame became international, thanks to some unbelievable episodes. For instance, Becky Li, during a partnership with the car brand MINI, launched through her WeChat channel, sell all the pieces available out within 5 minutes. 7 Mr. Bags is Chinese most famous luxury bags’ advisor, he reached incredible success on his WeChat e-commerce, launching exclusive limited-editions bags, in partnership with renowned brands, such as Givenchy, Tod’s, Longchamp. KOLs’ area of expertise can be multiple, that’s why, in the last paragraph I dwelled on some specific areas, like: beauty, wine art and country life. Peculiar figure in the field of beauty is Li Jiaqi, a young guy, who became famous for his live streams, in which he tests and promotes lipsticks, he reached huge followings in less than a year. During a funny challenge with the founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, in which they were challenging each other for managing to sell the major number of lipsticks, Jack Ma failed by selling only 10 lipsticks, while Li Jiaqi managed to sell thousands of them. Lady Penguin is leader in wine area of expertise, because its usage is still new to Chinese dining tables, her work is fundamental for teaching techniques and correct combinations of wine with food different categories’. She acts as a link for wine companies that want to export their products to China. Li Ziqi is an antithetical figure, compared to all the above, she is a blogger that conquered her fans’ attention for her videos set in Sichuan’s remote country, during which she works in the fields and shows all ancient techniques of planting, harvesting, making noodles etc. Her videos provide soft background music and she never speaks during them, they show an actual throwback to origins and to ancient Chinese traditions. Her videos have such a broad audience because they generate a state of relaxation on who’s watching, letting the viewer take a break from the frenetic pace of busy city life. Her fame reached Western world as well, in fact, her YouTube channel counts 8 million subscribers. Li Ziqi also owns an e-commerce, in which she sells her vintage style T-shirts, that she wears during videos and some tools she uses to work in the fields.

THE RURAL VIDEO INFLUENCERS IN CHINA: ON THE NEW EDGE OF URBANIZATION A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Xinwen Zhang May 2020 © 2020 Xinwen Zhang ABSTRACT On the new media platforms in China, especially the video platforms, some rural content has become quite influential, which is, to some extent, inconsistent with people's impression of the vulnerable position of rural areas the urban-rural inequality. This thesis studied some of the most popular the rural content producers with the close reading of their videos, explaining how they frame themselves and their artworks and what kind of "rurality" is performed to the audiences. While the audience might assign them as rural figures, these people were on the edge of the urban and the rural as they had a shared history as some people who were from the rural areas, spent a period of their lives as migrant workers, and finally became video influencers performing some kind of rural lifestyle. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Xinwen Zhang was born in Shenyang, China, and spent the first 18 years of her life there. Then, she went to Sun Yat-sen University and entered Boya college, which sets no determined major and emphasizes on text close reading to explore potential for students. She finally chose anthropology as the major and researched the breakfast stalls in New Phoenix Village. She went to the village and had close contact with the migrant workers running breakfast stalls and people at breakfast, mainly focusing on the population identification, identity cognition, and community construction of the migrant population as well as their dilemma.

  • Here Has Been a Substantial Re-Engagement with Ibsen Due to Social Progress in China
2019 IFTR CONFERENCE SCHEDULE DAY 1 MONDAY JULY 8 WG 1 DAY 1 MONDAY July 8 9:00-10:30 WG1 SAMUEL BECKETT WORKING GROUP ROOM 204 Chair: Trish McTighe, University of Birmingham 9:00-10:00 General discussion 10:00-11:00 Yoshiko Takebe, Shujitsu University Translating Beckett in Japanese Urbanism and Landscape This paper aims to analyze how Beckett’s drama especially Happy Days is translated within the context of Japanese urbanism and landscape. According to Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies, “shifts are seen as required, indispensable changes at specific semiotic levels, with regard to specific aspects of the source text” (Baker 270) and “changes at a certain semiotic level with respect to a certain aspect of the source text benefit the invariance at other levels and with respect to other aspects” (ibid.). This paper challenges to disclose the concept of urbanism and ruralism that lies in Beckett‘s original text through the lens of site-specific art demonstrated in contemporary Japan. Translating Samuel Beckett’s drama in a different environment and landscape hinges on the effectiveness of the relationship between the movable and the unmovable. The shift from Act I into Act II in Beckett’s Happy Days gives shape to the heroine’s urbanism and ruralism. In other words, Winnie, who is accustomed to being surrounded by urban materialism in Act I, is embedded up to her neck and overpowered by the rural area in Act II. This symbolical shift experienced by Winnie in the play is aesthetically translated both at an urban theatre and at a cave-like theatre in Japan.

These digital productions, despite a wide range of filming techniques and production quality, employ sophisticated narrative strategies and visual languages. This article examines the cultural politics behind the production, circulation, and consumption of these videos and the sociospatial dynamics reflected in the rediscovering and repackaging of rural life on Chinese social media. This article contends that these videos, rather than bridging the urban–rural gap, as they seem to, in fact reveal the predicaments of China’s urbanization process and suggest further (though subtle) urban–rural discrepancies. Keywords: microcelebrity, social media, short video, rurality, gentrification Following the 2016 breakout of microcelebrities (Senft, 2008) such as Papi Jiang, short videos, and the livestreaming industry in China (Iresearch, 2017; A. Department of Informatics and Media Master’s Programme in Social Sciences, Digital Media and Society specialization Two-year Master’s Thesis Pastoral Nostalgia and Digital Media: A Case Study Exploring Nostalgia Communication in Li Ziqi’s Online Short Videos Student: Jinpei Deng Supervisor: Helga Sadowski August 2020 Abstract The primary goal of this study is to observe how the meaning of nostalgia is negotiated and remediated in Li Ziqi’s short videos, and understand the construction and expression of pastoral images in the video, by examining its social modality of the audiencing site and the compositional and social modalities of the image site through a Critical Visual Approach(CVA). Except for CVA, Remix as a thinking tool helps to frame data selection, mixed methods and theories throughout. To be specific, the aim of this study is to examine Li Ziqi’s communication of nostalgia online via short videos, showcases how the pastoral characteristics are evoked in the videos and the relationship between nostalgia of pastoral life and short videos. Moreover, it is of interest to think about what nostalgia communication on short videos say about society. When it comes to the two sites, firstly, an ethnographic method of thick descriptions is used to study media text and selected comments on the audiencing site. Secondly, on the image site, compositional analysis on selected visual materials is used to examine its compositions and then signs and meanings embedded in them are analyzed through semiotic analysis and interpreted by thick descriptions. As for theories, nostalgia and media, the logic of social acceleration, remediation and new media, and simulacra and simulation are applied to facilitate discussion.
