In Language and Linguistics Compass 7.1:39-57 (2013) Survey of Chinese Historical Syntax Part I: Pre-Archaic and Archaic Chinese Edith Aldridge, University of Washington Abstract This is the first of two articles presenting a brief overview of Chinese historical syntax from the Pre-Archaic period to Middle Chinese. The phenomena under examination in the two papers are primarily aspects of pre-medieval grammar which differ markedly from modern Chinese varieties, specifically fronting of object NPs to preverbal position, the asymmetry between subject and object relative clause formation, and the encoding of argument structure alternations like active and passive. I relate each of these characteristics to morphological distinctions on nouns, verbs, or pronouns which are either overtly represented in the logographic writing system in Archaic Chinese or have been reconstructed for (Pre-)Archaic Chinese. In the second part of this series, I discuss the changes in the Archaic Chinese grammatical features and correlate these innovations with the loss of the (Pre-)Archaic Chinese morphology. The main goal of these articles is to highlight a common denominator, i.e. the morphology, which enables a systemic view of pre-medieval Chinese and the changes which have resulted in the striking differences observed in Middle Chinese and beyond. 1. Introduction This paper is the first in a two-part series on grammatical features of Chinese from the earliest attested records over a millennium before the Common Era (BCE) to Middle Chinese of approximately the 5th century of the Common Era (CE). The first installment introduces characteristics of Pre-Archaic and Archaic Chinese which distinguish it from both Middle Chinese and modern Chinese varieties, in particular Standard Mandarin. -

Abstract: For more than two decades, indigenous autonomy has been one of the main demands of Taiwan’s indigenous rights movement. Indigenous autonomy was incorporated into Chen Shui-bian’s campaign promises in 1999, and subsequently adopted as a policy goal in the 2000 DPP White Paper on Indigenous Policy. In 2005, the passage of the Basic Law on Indigenous Peoples made it seem as if this goal could soon be fulfilled. The Taroko Nation, recognized by the ROC in 2004, initially seemed poised to create Taiwan’s first indigenous autonomous region. Those goals, however, have been slowed down by the emergence of communities and individuals in their defined territory who refuse Taroko identity and have launched a competing drive for recognition as the Sediq Nation. Some Taroko people also resist the project of autonomy on the grounds that it merely empowers a small elite and does nothing to address their more immediate economic problems. These counter movements suggest that more is at stake in “autonomy” than indigenous rights. This paper thus looks at the creation of indigenous autonomy as part of an emerging civic society for an independent Taiwan. -

This is an activity pack to learn about the culture and traditions of Chinese New Year as observed in Malaysia. Due to the pandemic, many Girl Guide/Girl Scout units may not be able to meet face to face, therefore, leaders/units may adapt the activities to be done by individuals at home or in a group through virtual events. Suggested activities are simple and accompanied by references for leaders/units to do further research on each topic. A couple of references are suggested for each topic and these are not exhaustive. Leaders/units can do more research to find out more information. Individuals/units can choose activities they like from the list. It is not necessary to do all the activities listed in each topic. Most important is enjoy them with people whom you care! Due to the lack of time, we were not able to turn this into a nicely designed activity pack. We hope that by learning about culture, we could develop better understanding between people of different ethnicities as part of the peacebuilding process, and at the same time, having fun. Please note that the activities and descriptions are mostly based on the authors’ own knowledge and experience plus information from the internet. We apologize in advance should there be any parts that are inaccurate or cause discomfort in anyone. The Heritage of Non-theistic Belief in China Joseph A. Adler Kenyon College Presented to the international conference, "Toward a Reasonable World: The Heritage of Western Humanism, Skepticism, and Freethought" (San Diego, September 2011) Naturalism and humanism have long histories in China, side-by-side with a long history of theistic belief. In this paper I will first sketch the early naturalistic and humanistic traditions in Chinese thought. I will then focus on the synthesis of these perspectives in Neo-Confucian religious thought. I will argue that these forms of non-theistic belief should be considered aspects of Chinese religion, not a separate realm of philosophy. Confucianism, in other words, is a fully religious humanism, not a "secular humanism." The religion of China has traditionally been characterized as having three major strands, the "three religions" (literally "three teachings" or san jiao) of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Buddhism, of course, originated in India in the 5th century BCE and first began to take root in China in the 1st century CE, so in terms of early Chinese thought it is something of a latecomer. Confucianism and Daoism began to take shape between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. But these traditions developed in the context of Chinese "popular religion" (also called folk religion or local religion), which may be considered a fourth strand of Chinese religion. And until the early 20th century there was yet a fifth: state religion, or the "state cult," which had close relations very early with both Daoism and Confucianism, but after the 2nd century BCE became associated primarily (but loosely) with Confucianism. -

This paper aims to present a relatively comprehensive linguistic picture of SM by overviewing current studies, particularly on the variations that distinguish SM from other Mandarin varieties, and to serve as a reference for future studies on SM. This paper notes that (a) current studies have often provided general descriptions of the variations, but less on individual variations that may lead to more theoretical discussions; (b) the studies on SM are primarily based on the comparison with Mainland China Mandarin; (c) language contact has been taken as the major contributor of the variation in SM, whereas other factors are often neglected; and (d) corpora with SM data are comparatively less developed and the evaluation of data has remained largely in descriptive statistics. -

From Eurocentrism to Sinocentrism: The case of disposal constructions in Sinitic languages Hilary Chappell 1. Introduction 1.1. The issue Although China has a long tradition in the compilation of rhyme dictionar- ies and lexica, it did not develop its own tradition for writing grammars until relatively late.1 In fact, the majority of early grammars on Chinese dialects, which begin to appear in the 17th century, were written by Europe- ans in collaboration with native speakers. For example, the Arte de la len- gua Chiõ Chiu [Grammar of the Chiõ Chiu language] (1620) appears to be one of the earliest grammars of any Sinitic language, representing a koine of urban Southern Min dialects, as spoken at that time (Chappell 2000).2 It was composed by Melchior de Mançano in Manila to assist the Domini- cans’ work of proselytizing to the community of Chinese Sangley traders from southern Fujian. Another major grammar, similarly written by a Do- minican scholar, Francisco Varo, is the Arte de le lengua mandarina [Grammar of the Mandarin language], completed in 1682 while he was living in Funing, and later posthumously published in 1703 in Canton.3 Spanish missionaries, particularly the Dominicans, played a signifi- cant role in Chinese linguistic history as the first to record the grammar and lexicon of vernaculars, create romanization systems and promote the use of the demotic or specially created dialect characters. This is discussed in more detail in van der Loon (1966, 1967). The model they used was the (at that time) famous Latin grammar of Elio Antonio de Nebrija (1444–1522), Introductiones Latinae (1481), and possibly the earliest grammar of a Ro- mance language, Grammatica de la Lengua Castellana (1492) by the same scholar, although according to Peyraube (2001), the reprinted version was not available prior to the 18th century. -

ABSTRACT: Sixty years after the conclusion of World War II, memories of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan remain a part of social and political life in the country. In the weeks leading up to the 2005 county and township elections, for example, the KMT headquarters in Taipei were adorned with an enormous image of Mona Ludaw, the aboriginal hero who had led a rebellion against the Japanese in 1930. The use of this particular image has historical precedents in KMT historical narrative of that rebellion illustrating resistance against Taiwan’s colonial overlords on behalf of the Republic of China. The electoral image, meant to appeal to the party’s hard-core Mainlander supporters, uses social memory of anti-Japanese rebellion to reinforce its image as the carrier of Chinese nationalism. In this discourse, the DPP and its supporters end up looking sympathetic to Japan and nostalgic for colonial rule. But what of the memories of Taiwan’s aboriginal people, the families and communities of Mona Ludaw? How are images and perspectives of the Japanese period evoked in personal and social memories in their communities? This paper, based on anthropological field research and interviews with villagers of the Truku people (Mona Ludaw’s tribe), shows how aboriginal memories of the period both differ from and articulate with the social memories of Mainlanders and Native Taiwanese. -

chapter 6 A Preliminary Study of Kaoka 高甲 Playscripts in the Philippines Caroline Chia 1 Introduction As part of a book on Sinitic languages in Southeast Asia, particularly those that are increasingly endangered, this chapter emphasizes “Sinophone” and “Sinitic voices” in the Philippines. Briefly defined, the Sinophone landscape involves Sinitic languages, including Hokkien, and the associated cultures and com- munities which historically experienced colonialism and have increasingly been marginalized in more recent times.1 Here I focus on Sinophone speech, including the soundscapes in which speech is embedded, through theatrical performance in Hokkien. Kaoka was once a popular form of entertainment in Southeast Asia, but the Philippines is the only country in the region that still performs this theatrical art today. I furthermore aim to highlight the diversity of Sinophonic representations as seen in Kaoka playscripts. In these sources, only the phonetic elements have been preserved, whereas the logographic representations (known as Sinographs or Hanzi 漢字) have been omitted. As regards the “Sinitic voices” that this chapter – and this book in general – aims to highlight in the context of Southeast Asia’s Chinese minorities, the academic focus has previously been on the migration and economic devel- opment of Chinese communities in this region. These developments remain important and will be taken into consideration, but the focus here is on filling the cultural and linguistic gaps in scholarship on Kaoka in the Philippines.
