Barbara Jones (Slater) Barbara Jones (Slater) (born March 26, 1937 in Chicago), a Tigerbelle from 1957 to 1961 and a 1961 graduate of Tennessee State, was a member of the 1952 and 1960 Olympic-champion 4 x 100 meter relay teams, both of which set world records. She remains the youngest Olympic track gold medalist ever, at age fifteen, and she was a frequent member of the American 4 x 100 meter relay team that dominated 1950s competition. She was also part of three of TSU’s Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) national-championship winning teams1. (In the years prior to highly- organized intercollegiate sports, the AAU championship was the most important national-level competition for women.) In addition to her victories as a member of the national and TSU teams, Jones had a number of individual victories in the 100 meters/100 yards: the AAU national championship in 1953, 1954, and 19572, the Pan American Games in 1955, and the USA-USSR dual meet in 19583 and 1959, when the meet “rivaled the Olympic Games in international and domestic importance”4. -

4 The Tennessee State Tigerbelles Cold Warriors of the Track Carroll Van West In the lore of Tennessee sports history, few names are more evocative and lionized than the Tennessee State Tigerbelles, a group of women sprinters who dominated track and field events in the nation and world from the mid-1950s to mid-1980s.1 Scholarly interest in the impact of the Tigerbelles has multiplied in the twenty-first century, with dissertations and books addressing how these women track and field stars shaped mid-twentieth-century images of African American women, women involved in sports in general, and issues of civil rights and international affairs.2 The story of the Tigerbelles and their significance to American sport and cul- ture must center on the great talent and dedication to excellence of these young women. But as media coverage of their athletic exploits intensified from the early 1950s to the 1960s, the Tigerbelles were swept up in American preoccupation with the role of women in contemporary sport, the impact of race in American sport, and the role that amateur athletes could play as pawns in the propaganda postur- ings of the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Track and field at Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State College (renamed in 1968 as Tennessee State University) began in the aftermath of Jessie Owens’s success at the 1936 Olympics. The college’s first women’s track team formed in 1943 under the direction of Jessie Abbott, succeeded by Lula Bartley in 1945. Abbott brought with him a commitment to excellence gained at Tuskegee Institute, home to the first nationally dominant African American track and field program. -

Tennessee State University Digital Scholarship @ Tennessee State University Tennessee State University Olympians Tennessee State University Olympic History 6-2020 Martha Hudson Pennyman Jennifer Castle Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalscholarship.tnstate.edu/tsu-olympians Part of the Sports Studies Commons, and the United States History Commons Martha Hudson Pennyman The daughter of a truck driver and a homemaker, both with limited education, Martha Hudson Pennyman was born in Eastman, Georgia, on March 21, 1939, the oldest of three children.1 The Hudson family moved several times between Georgia and South Carolina while her father sought employment, but eventually settled in McCrae, Georgia, where Pennyman attended Twin City Elementary and High schools.2 At less than five feet tall, Pennyman earned the nickname “Pee Wee” for athletic accomplishments. By the time she was 14, she had won the district championship in the 50-, 75-, and 100-meter dashes held in Fort Valley, Georgia.3 She played basketball (her favorite sport) for the Twin City High School team, as a guard and later, team captain.4 However, Robert Jackson Sr., a physical education teacher, noticed Martha's natural running ability and encouraged her to concentrate on track.5 By the end of Pennyman’s freshman year, she had competed in the Tuskegee Relays where she finished third in the 100- meter.6 It was there she caught the attention of Edward Temple, the acclaimed track coach of the Tennessee State University Tigerbelles, and he invited her to participate -
