Endowed Student Internship Awards: a Portion of the Miller Upton Memorial Endowments Supports Exceptional Students Pursuing High-Impact Internship Experiences Senior Seminar on The Wealth and Well-Being of Nations: Each year, seniors in the department of economics participate in a semester-long course that is built around the ideas and influence of that year’s Upton Scholar. By the time the Upton Scholar arrives in October, students will have read several of his or her books and research by other scholars that has been influenced by these writings. This advanced preparation provides students the rare opportunity to engage with a leading intellectual figure on a substantive and scholarly level. Endowed Student Internship Awards: A portion of the Miller Upton Memorial Endowments supports exceptional students pursuing high-impact internship experiences. Students are encouraged to pursue internships with for-profit firms and non-profit research organizations dedicated to advancing the wealth and well-being of nations. Charles G. Koch Student Research Colloquium and Speaker Series: With generous support from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, the department has initiated a research colloquium that gives students the opportunity to read and discuss seminal articles aimed at deepening their understanding of the market process. Students also develop original analysis that applies economic ideas to novel contexts. Colloquium participants receive close mentoring as they craft an article with the eventual goal of publication in a newspaper, magazine, or academic journal. The themes of the research colloquium and annual forum are supported with a monthly speaker series featuring the next generation of scholars working on questions central to our understanding of the nature and causes of wealth and well-being. Annual Proceedings of The Wealth and Well-Being of Nations: The keynote address presented by the Upton Scholar is an important contribution to the public discourse on the nature and causes of wealth and well-being. Further, the annual forum includes presentations by noted scholars who expand upon or challenge the work of the Upton Scholar. These presentations are assembled in the Annual Proceedings of the Wealth and Well-Being of Nations, which serves as an important intellectual resource for students, alumni, and leaders within higher education. Introduction Emily Chamlee-Wright s the Elbert Neese Professor of Economics, it is my privilege to introduce the fourth Annual Proceedings of the Wealth and Well-Being of Nations. This volume is particularly poignant as its publication marks the passing Aof our featured Upton Scholar, Elinor Ostrom. Under the banner of the Miller Upton Programs, each year the Department of Economics at Beloit College features a distinguished, internationally recognized scholar who works within the classical liberal tradition. Upton Scholars are among those who have fundamentally shaped the world’s understanding of the nature and causes of widespread prosperity and human development, and Elinor Ostrom certainly fits well within this company. Professor Ostrom exemplified everything the Miller Upton Programs have sought to honor: a commitment to civil discourse, a deep respect for the power of ideas to change the world, and the emancipating potential of liberal learning. It was indeed our honor to feature Elinor Ostrom, co-recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, as the fourth Upton Scholar. In addition to Professor Ostrom, we featured leading scholars whose work complements hers. Our primary goal in assembling this cadre of scholars was to demonstrate that the intellectual enterprise of understanding the nature and causes of wealth and well-being is an ongoing project. The essays collected in this volume capture in written form many of the ideas exchanged, challenges posed, and questions considered during the Upton Forum and over the course of the academic year. But as the year unfolded and it became increasingly clear that Lin’s health was failing, this volume took on a second and increasingly important purpose, which was to honor this great scholar and teacher. On behalf of its contributors, I therefore dedicate this volume to Lin’s memory and to her work that has inspired generations of thoughtful teacher-scholars dedicated to both sides of their craft. 12 The Annual Proceedings of the Wealth and Well-Being of Nations A Pioneer in All Respects A child of the Great Depression, a first generation college student, and a pioneer for women seeking graduate training in the social sciences, Elinor Ostrom’s story is a remarkable one. In an autobiographical account, Ostrom described the mental shift that was required to be the first in her family to pursue a college degree and the hard work that was necessary to finance it (Ostrom 2009). She described further her shock in learning that upon graduation, employers considered placement within a secretarial position as the only appropriate choice. In response to her initial inquiries, graduate programs in economics actively discouraged her from pursuing a PhD. The political science department at UCLA did admit her into its PhD program, but she recalled, not without heated debate about the wisdom of admitting and offering an assistantship to a woman (ibid.). The presumption was that upon graduation no reputable college or university would hire her, thereby damaging the reputation of UCLA’s PhD program. It was in the course of her graduate training that she began studying the water industry in Southern California, calling upon the work of Vincent Ostrom, Charles Tiebout, and Robert Warren (1961). Ostrom became increasingly interested in the social coordination problems associated with managing what she would later recognize as common pool resources (CPRs)—resources that are subject to appropriation by a large number of community members and, if left unmanaged, are subject to over-exploitation and degradation. This work would later form part of the foundation for her seminal book Governing the Commons (1990), but that would come later. Ostrom recalled, “In 1965, Vincent was offered an attractive position as full professor at Indiana University, Bloomington. I tagged along as it was very hard for any department to hire a woman in those days. Fortunately, the Department of Political Science later needed someone to teach Introduction

As Masons we know that we do no such thing. Since 1717 we have been a modern, rational, scientifically minded craft, practicing moral and theological virtues. But there is a background of occult science in Freemasonry, and it is related to the secret fraternity of the Rosicrucians. The Renaissance Heritage1 During the Italian renaissance of the 15th century, scholars rediscovered and translated classical texts of Plato, Pythagoras, and the Hermetic writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, thought to be from ancient Egypt. Over the next two centuries there was a widespread growth in Europe of various magical and spiritual practices – magic, alchemy, astrology -- based on those texts. The mysticism and magic of Jewish Cabbala was also studied from texts brought from Spain and the Muslim world. All of these magical practices had a religious aspect, in the quest for knowledge of the divine order of the universe, and Man’s place in it. The Hermetic vision of Man was of a divine soul, akin to the angels, within a material, animal body. By the 16th century every royal court in Europe had its own astrologer and some patronized alchemical studies. In England, Queen Elizabeth had Dr. John Dee (1527- 1608) as one of her advisors and her court astrologer. Dee was also an alchemist, a student of the Hermetic writings, and a skilled mathematician. He was the most prominent practitioner of Cabbala and alchemy in 16th century England.

Puritans and the Royal Society THE official programme of the recent tercentenary celebrations of the founding of the Royal Society included a single religious service. This was held at 10.30 a.m. at St Paul's Cathedral when the Dean, the Very Rev. W. R. Matthews, D.D., D.LITT., preached a sermon related to the building's architect, Sir Christopher Wren. Otherwise there seems to be little reference to the religious background of the Society's pioneers and a noticeable omission of appreciation of the considerable Puritan participation in its institution. The events connected with the Royal Society's foundation range over the period 1645 to 1663, but there were also earlier influences. One of these was Sir Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam, 1561-1626. Douglas McKie, Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science, University College, London, in The Times Special Number, 19 July 1960, states that Bacon's suggested academy called Solomon's House described in New Atlantis (1627) was too often assumed to be influential in the founding of the Royal Society, much in the same way as Bacon's method of induction, expounded in his Novum Organum of 1620, has been erroneously regarded as a factor in the rise of modern science. But this may be disputed, for Bacon enjoyed considerable prestige as a learned man and his works were widely read.

    The Roots of a Science of Consciousness in Hermetic Alchemy Dennis William Hauck, Ph.D. Go directly to the text of the paper Abstract Alchemy is not only the origin of systematic experimentation and chemistry but also the first attempt to create a cohesive science of consciousness. Those early philosophers of nature treated mental contents as objective phenomena, and they believed the universal operations used in their laboratories could transform a dark leaden mind into a shining golden one. The Hermetic philosophy behind alchemy taught that our thoughts and feelings are the thoughts and feelings of the whole universe, and that intrinsic perspective generated deep insight into the structure of mind. Alchemists viewed consciousness as a natural force that could be harnessed through a marriage of logic and intuition – a union of objective and subjective realities. Like modern seekers of a unified field theory, alchemists sought one true philosophy of universal principles that were as valid in Nature as they were in their own minds and souls, and in the One Mind of the Cosmos. The resulting cauldron of ideas on mind and matter leads to a truer understanding of the Philosopher’s Stone – not as an object but a state of mind. EISENBERG, M.D., Vl 0 Rose Croix, also called Rose Cross or The Rosy Cross, is an Order whose symbol is a red cross with a white rose at its center. Its founder was the semi-mythical Christian Rosenkreuz, who was a Kabba list and alchemist and founder of the Rosicrucian Order. This symbol exemplified the teachings of a tradition formed within the Christian tenets and represented by the following quote which defined itself: "What think you loving people, and how seem you affected, seeing that you now understand and know, that we acknowledge ourselves truly and sincerely to profess Christ, condemn the Pope, addict ourselves to the true Philosophy, lead a Christian life, and daily call, entreat and invite many more unto our Fraternity, unto whom the same Light of God likewise appeareth?"1 However, the symbol had several meanings depending on the source. From a non­ sectarian or non-religious viewpoint, represented by a group such as the Ancient and Mystical Order Rosae Crucis, it was said that the rosy cross predated Christianity and that the cross represented the human body and the rose represented man's unfolding consciousness. 2 The Rosicrucian Fellowship and similar rosicrucianists holding an esoteric Christian viewpoint maintained that the Rosicrucian Brotherhood was founded in the early 14th century.3 It began as an Invisible College of mystic sages, as previously mentioned, by a highly evolved entity with the symbolic name of Christian Rosenkreuz, with the mission of "preparing a new phase of the Christian religion to be used during the coming age now at hand, for as the world and man evolve, so also must religion change."4 We can define Rosicrucianism in a generic sense as the study or membership in a philosophical secret society founded in late medieval Germany by Christian Rosenkreuz.

Case-studies of the circle of Samuel Hartlib, one of the most prolific groups of reformers in post-Reformation Europe, are flourishing. The uncovering of rich details has, however, made it difficult to draw a meaningful generalization about the circle’s bewilderingly wide range of activities. Focusing on the circle’s promotion of ‘useful knowledge’, this article offers an analytical framework for building a new synthesis. The eclectic and seemingly chaotic pursuit of useful knowledge emerged, it will be shown, as differing responses to, and interpretations of, pervasive distrust and the pursuit of reformation. The article thus explores how loosely-shared experience shaped the circle’s ambivalent practices of collaboration and exclusion. Thomas Leng Summary o f thesis. This thesis is a biographical account of Benjamin Worsley, an individual whose wide- ranging interests touched on many dynamic areas of H^-century English history. Best known as an expert in colonial and commercial government, Worsley was employed in this capacity both under the Commonwealth (as secretary to the 1650-51 Council of Trade), and the Restored monarchy (on the various councils of 1668-73). By tracing Worsley’s career across these years, we see how the Commonwealth’s positive approach to commerce, embodied by the Navigation Act of 1651, survived the Restoration, when the advancement of trade was increasingly identified as the national interest. This involves analysis both of the content of Worsley’s ideas about trade and the colonies, and of how he used these ideas to gain employment, thus contributing to the institutional and intellectual development of the first British Empire. As well as considering his public career, the thesis examines Worsley’s attitudes to and interest in a broad range of areas. This is made possible by his association with the circle of Samuel Hartlib, whose papers provide the major source for this study. Beginning with the account provided by the historian Charles Webster, the study considers Worsley’s interest in natural philosophy and especially alchemy (including his friendship with Robert Boyle), other activities such as his employment on the Down Survey of Ireland, and his religious and political opinions.

MILLER Under the Direction of Nicholas Wilding, PhD ABSTRACT Discovered in 1933 after having been hidden from the academic world for 271 years, the Hartlib Papers have been called the greatest 17 th century research revelation of the 20 th century. Yet 81 years later the author and collector of the papers remains a mystery and the content of the papers have been little appreciated. Who was this auctor prudens and what do his voluminous papers have to say about his time? This thesis argues that Hartlib is a critical link in a long chain of scholars who formed and shaped the development of science. An evolution which began with Roger Bacon, more fully developed into a new epistemology with Francis Bacon, is passed on by Hartlib to others who were founding members of the Royal Society.
