European Commission - Announcement

Visit of the College of Commissioners to Helsinki, 5 July 2019 The College of Commissioners travelled to Helsinki for the launch of the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the EU. President Juncker had meetings with the President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö, the Prime Minister Antti Rinne and the Speaker of the Parliament . In his meeting with Antti Rinne, President Juncker highlighted the challenges ahead for the next 6 months. He insisted that cooperation of all actors will be needed for a successful Presidency and discussed, among other issues, how an agreement on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021- 2027 can be achieved by autumn this year. At the press conference with Antti Rinne, President Juncker said: " has proven itself a leader in our Union, acting as more of a founding Member State than most founding Member States do. Finland has always chosen the European path.[…] During these challenging times, Europe needs Finland: experienced, pragmatic and cool-headed, the Finnish Presidency has all it takes to drive forward the solutions we need to tackle the big issues that matter to our citizens.” On climate change, President Juncker said: "Totale harmonie aussi avec la présidence finlandaise sur la question de la lutte contre le changement climatique. Nous n'avons plus de temps à perdre. C'est maintenant que nous devons agir tous ensemble pour la planète. Demain sera trop tard. Il nous faudrait au moins 4 planètes pour maintenir notre façon actuelle de vivre, de produire et de consommer. Et nous n'en avons qu'une." The priorities of the Finnish Presidency are to strengthen the common values of the Union and the rule of law, to make the Union more competitive and socially inclusive, to strengthen the Union's position as a world leader in combating climate change and to protect European citizens at all levels. These priorities are supported by the European Commission, as underlined in the Commission's contribution to the informal meeting of Heads of State or Government of the EU27 held in Sibiu (Romania) on 9 May 2019.
