A Scout is Reverent A collection of worship services and worship helps for weekend camping. A Scout is Reverent A collection of worship services and worship helps for weekend camping. The Boy Scout Oath begins with “On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God….” The Scout Law ends with “A Scout is Reverent”. All that we do in the Scouting movement is framed within the values of the Scout Oath and Law, which begin and end with our relationship to God. It is important, therefore, that we include worship as part of weekend camping events. This booklet is designed for a Judeo-Christian group, that is, for Scouts and Leaders who are Jewish or Christian. (Though Muslims and Hindus, because of their respect for and acknowledgement of the Bible as sacred writings, can use this resource as well.) There are some services specifically for a Christian group. A companion booklet of Meditations can be used with these services, or the worship leader can use his or her own meditation, as appropriate. 1 Mealtime Grace 4 Songs for Worship 7 21 Holy, Holy, Holy ........................................................................7 22 Morning Has Broken................................................................7 23 Allelu ...........................................................................................8 24 I Will Call Upon the Lord.......................................................8 25 This Is The Day .......................................................................9 26 For the Beauty of the Earth.................................................10 27 This is my Father’s World .....................................................11 28 Amazing Grace..........................................................................12 29 I Sing Praises To Your Name................................................13 30 Amen ...........................................................................................13 31 Draw Me Close...........................................................................14 32 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.........................................14 33 America The Beautiful ...........................................................15 34 He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands............................16 35 Now Thank We All Our God ..................................................16 2 Worship services 17 101 Praise .........................................................................................17 102 Scout Oath (1) ........................................................................18 103 Scout Law (1)...........................................................................20 104 Serving Others.......................................................................22 105 Like the Eagle .........................................................................24 106 Our Creator (1).......................................................................26 107 Our Creator (2) ......................................................................28 108 Being a Good Example ...........................................................30 109 Scout Law (2)..........................................................................32 110 Scout Oath (2) ........................................................................34 111 Neighbor....................................................................................36 112 Help from God (1) ...................................................................38 113 Help from God (2) ..................................................................40 114 Getting Along with Others...................................................42 115 Praise and Thanks...................................................................44 Prayers 46 Meditation on the Scout Oath ...................................................46 Meditation on the Scout Law......................................................54 Prayers for my Circumstances....................................................64 3 Mealtime Grace 1 Philmont Grace For food, for raiment, for life, for opportunity, For friendship and fellowship, we thank Thee, O Lord. Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! 22 Morning Has Broken Morning has broken like the first morning, Blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them springing, Fresh from the Word! 7 23 Allelu Allelu, Allelu, Allelu, Alleluia! Praise ye the Lord! Allelu, Allelu, Allelu, Alleluia! Praise ye the Lord! Praise ye the Lord! Alleluia! Praise ye the Lord! Alleluia! Praise ye the Lord! Alleluia! Praise ye the Lord! (This song works well for opening a worship service. Have half the scouts stand for “Allelu” and sit for “Praise”… and the other half sitting for “Allelu” and standing for “Praise”… All stand together for the last line.) 24 I Will Call Upon the Lord I will call upon the Lord, Who is worthy to be praised! So shall I be saved from my enemies; I will call upon the Lord! (continued next page) 8 The Lord liveth and blessed be the Rock And may the God of my salvation be exalted! The Lord liveth and blessed be the Rock And may the God of my salvation be exalted! 25 This Is The Day This is the day (echo) This is the day That the Lord has made (echo) That the Lord has made We will rejoice (echo) We will rejoice And be glad in it (echo) And be glad in it. (All) This is the day that the Lord has made We will rejoice and be glad in it This is the day (echo) This is the day (All) That the Lord has made! For the wonder of each hour Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flow'r, Sun and moon, and stars of light; Lord of all, to Thee we raise This, our hymn of grateful praise. For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth and friends above, For all gentle thoughts and mild; Lord of all, to Thee we raise This, our hymn of grateful praise. 10 27 This is my Father’s World This is my Father’s world, And to my listening ears, All nature sings and round me rings The music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world, I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas, His hands the wonders wrought. This is my Fathers world The birds their carols raise, The morning light, the lily white, Declare their Maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world, He shines in all that’s fair; In the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me ev’rywhere. 11 28 Amazing Grace Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found T’was blind, but now I see. T’was grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come Tis grace has brought me safe thus far And grace will lead me home! When we’ve been there ten
