T Vlasta Nussdorfer, Human Rights Ombudsman Dear Reader, many blades of grass seek to draw the world’s attention to the injustices they undergo and also of the power of the bulldozers which the blades of grass cannot defy due to their smallness, fragility and powerlessness. The Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia (the Ombudsman) thus has a lot of work when investigating several thousand complaints and calls from frequently desperate people claiming that local or state authorities are violating their human rights and fundamental freedoms. I met them at the beginning of 2013, when I assumed the management of this institution as the fourth Human Rights Ombudsman in the Republic of Slovenia. More and more calls to the toll-free telephone number were recorded every month (8,701 calls in 2012; 10,875 calls in 2013), and there were more visits to the head office of the institution and interviews with people round Slovenia.

The Biennial develops from the physical exploration of seven conditions all over Slovenia on which designers were invited to reflect. This is a contemporary phenomenon characteristic of our era: young, informed and emancipated people who have grown up within urban models bring their values into non-urban spaces. The theoretical appropriation of the so-called Alter-urban within the context of BIO 25 has been made possible by the de-centralization of the biennial itself, together with the physical observation and response of the participants.

Methods In the beginning of the 2011, we analyzed 102 bones and teeth using the PowerPlex ESX 17 System (Pro- mega), AmpFiSTR NGM PCR Amplification Kit (Applied Bio- systems), and Investigator ESSplex Kit (Qiagen). We cleaned the bones and teeth, removed surface contamination, and ground them into a powder using liquid nitrogen. Prior to DNA isolation with Biorobot EZ1 (Qiagen), 0.5 g bone or tooth powder was decalcified. Nuclear DNA of the samples was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction. All three kits used the same extract with the amplification conditions recommended by the manufacturers. Results We extracted up to 131 ng DNA/g of powder from the bones and teeth. All three amplification kits showed very similar efficiency, since DNA typing was success- ful with all amplification kits in 101 out of 102 bones and teeth, which represents a 99% success rate. Conclusion The commercially available ESX 17, ESSplex, and NGM kits are highly reliable for STR typing of World Received: August 26, 2011 War II skeletal remains with the DNA extraction method optimized in our laboratory.

Secession Ljubljana is one of the most recognisable parts of the city and that part of our cultural heritage which put Ljubljana alongside the biggest Art Nouveau capital cities, such as Brussels, Vienna, Paris, Barcelona. On Easter, 14th of April 1895 at 11.17pm CET time, Ljubljana, with ! its 31,000 citizens and 1,400 buildings, was shaken by a very strong earthquake (its aftershocks were existing all the way to Vienna in Austria, Split in Croatia and Florence in Italy). About 10% of the buildings had to be demolished and all the rest were in need of a restoration.

Three distinct approaches to Tolminc cheese are described: Tolminc cheese with Protected Designation of Origin, Tolminc cheese with a collective trademark, and non-certified and unregistered Tolminc-like cheese. Introduction Today, Tolminc cheese is one of the best known cheeses in Slovenia: it is the trademarked and most recognised cheese of the successful Planika Dairy, it is one of the four cheeses certified with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), and it is one of several good-value-for-money cheeses that – despite a somewhat higher price – are very popular and widely consumed in Slovenia. The article is based on the long-term ethnography of alpine dairy practices in the Julian Alps, several unstructured interviews with cattle breeders, cheesemakers, employees of Planika Dairy, regional development agencies, Triglav National Park, agricultural cooperatives and government ministries, and is supplemented by interpretations and analysis of primary 209 Špela Ledinek Lozej sources, such as laws, regulations, decrees, product specifications, statutes, programs and similar technical literature.
