The Secret Garden, written by American-English novelist and playwright Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911, is a beloved childhood classic. Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman penned the Tony award-winning music and book in 1991 for the Broadway stage adaptation. It is a very challenging production, and therefore a fitting choice for our college-preparatory students. Timeless messages about the importance of family and enduring power of love make the show a wonderful selection for our broader K-12 educational community as well. Although neatly packaged as a Victorian tale about a young girl named Mary Lennox and a beautiful garden, the musical actually addresses many of the “big” questions in life that puzzle children and which adults avoid with kids. For example, questions surrounding fear, neglect, death and grief permeate the story. Despite these darker undercurrents, however, the concept of transformation and the mystery of faith also remain central to the narrative. Mary Lennox draws from both Eastern and Western traditions in her journey towards truth, as well as trusting in the “healing power of living things.” In this respect her Aunt Lilly’s secret garden functions as a natural sanctuary, a sacred space and for growth and renewal. We have worked since September to completely reimagine The Secret Garden. Virtually all of the artwork and animations are original, hand-drawn content. Conceptually, we chose the famous American artist Edward Gorey as a departure point and inspiration for creating our aesthetic. Gorey specialized in spooky, child-like Victorian and Edwardian ink drawings. By simplifying what is typically a lavish set design, we hoped to focus attention towards the literary significance of the original novel, as well as the wonderfully crafted relationships between the characters. This production marks a bold departure into unchartered territory for The Arts at St. Margaret’s, namely video projection design. This medium lies at the intersections of technology, art, and design. It’s the future of American theater, in that it potentially reduces costs associated with building traditional “unit sets” and introduces another interactive mode for storytelling in live performance. It is therefore a fantastic learning opportunity for our students. The process, however, is highly complex. It involves a tremendous amount of collaboration, and a diverse set of skills such as a deep understanding of different hardware and software applications, visual art capabilities, and programming expertise. Thanks to a generous grant from the PTF and Arts Alliance we were able to hire a recent graduate from the MFA Program in Video Performance at CalArts, Masha Tatarintseva, to help guide and consult us through this massive undertaking. We are also so proud to feature the original animation work of Senior Shelby Nicholas in a few of the longer song sequences. Our unique approach to The Secret Garden reflects the risk-taking we aspire to role model for our students, exposes them to an innovative work environment, and cultivates learning through the inherently collaborative art form of theater. A special heartfelt thanks to all of the dedicated professionals and production team who so tirelessly give of themselves to make this all possible. Thank you for supporting The Arts at St. Margaret’s, and we hope you enjoy the show!
