    BETWEEN MUSIC AND SUB-CULTURE: ANALYSIS OF MANEA AND HIP-HOP IN ROMANIA -Anca Cretu- Post-1989 Romania is increasingly defined by the search for cultural identity and the clash of cultures. The communist regime of 1944-1989 opposed extraneous invasive elements, whether political, economic, or even cultural. Thus, people became more attached to what they considered to be “their own,” particularly in the cultural sphere. This broad trend is reflected in terms of post- 1989 attitudes in recording music. Among the issues relevant to the cultural clashes is the way in which a post-communist popular culture overcomes important nationalistic boundaries. Nowadays, Romania searches for its cultural identity in a particular way, torn between developing nationalistic spirit and the need for western novelty. These two trends are the result of such transformations such as economic globalization, revolutions in technology, and the opening of markets i — one of the most accessible being the audiovisual market. It is simultaneously the most prominent forum for the expression of a cultural identity, shaping the image of life styles, a relatively new concept for the Romanian people. In the context of accession to the EU, there is a growing interest and focus on the audiovisual, as a way of battling Americanization. For many people of the former eastern bloc, this term connotes sexuality, violence, and the ruin of “Europeanness.” ii As with most European youth, Romanian teens are great media consumers, increasingly interested in keeping themselves updated with products from around the world. For them, music is an important way of expression in the search for personal identity.

    Michaela PRAISLER ISSN 2029-4182 Daniela ŞORCARU GRUPĖS IR APLINKOS: 2010.2 Isabela MERILĂ Dunărea de Jos University of Galaţi Hip-Hop in Romania (1992-2008) Abstract The presented report includes an overview of the political and social situation of post-Communist Romania from the viewpoint of establishing the emergence and development of hip-hop as a ‘taste’ subculture. As there were very few detectable traces of the specific literature we needed in Romanian, our pioneering work started with adapting foreign literature in the field to the Romanian realities we faced. The results of our research are quantified, discussed and concluded complete with references and the state-of-the-art. Keywords: hip-hop, subculture, post-Communist Romania Introduction After 1989, in the post-Communist era, the academic research in Eastern Europe, Romania included, opened up to the new problems posed by the mechanisms of cultural change. Public recognition of decentring margins and of oppositional forces to mainstream culture gradually brought about an increased interest in subcultures (originated in terms of region, ethnicity, class, religion or ‘taste’). An analysis of such, it was felt, would contribute to a better understanding of the inner workings of the local and global state of affairs, despite the neuralgic points being tackled. ‘Taste’ subcultures were the last to gain visibility and to form a subject for scholarly investigation. This explains the scarcity of resources in the field and the necessity of giving more attention to this otherwise prominent phenomenon. The particular case of Romanian hip-hop and its novel discourse was made the object of our research within the Sixth Framework Project, Society and Lifestyles.

His seminal album GRADEATIA-NATURAL was the first fully- electronic album to be released in Romania under its culturally-repressive Communist regime in 1984. Gradeatia was commissioned by the Belgian Radio-Television and recorded at I.P.E.M. Ghent. It’s an exploration into sonic primordial and universal archetypes recording ambient narrative blends, melodic electronic drones with field recordings to paint an ‘electronic fresco’. After its reissue on Sub Rosa last year, EUROPALIA is proud to present the pieces in a 50 speakers acousmonium, interpreted by the Belgian composer and musician Caroline Profanter. The festival aimed to generate a greater un- derstanding of other countries through art and culture. The need for this had grown in the context of the European Eco- nomic Community, where countries started working together and their citizens living together. An introduction to each other’s culture could stimulate genuine interest and thereby strengthen dialogue and cohesion. No fewer than 26 festivals have taken place over the years, with top editions such as Europalia Spain (1985) and Europalia Austria (1987). In 1989, Europalia Japan marked the moment when the festival started to look beyond Europe. Several non-European countries have subsequently been invited, including Russia (2005) and India (2013). But a lot has changed since then. Today, it would be unthinkable for the festival to like it did 50 or even 20 years ago.

Chaney Abstract For the past two decades, Hip Hop has attained a significant presence in Romania. The fall of Communism as well as growing social unrest has led a growing number of Hip Hop artists to incorporate strong Orthodox and nationalist messages into their lyrics. However, not all Hip Hop fans advocate this stance. This essay argues for an investigation of how Romanian youth respond to the religious and spiritual lyrics in Hip Hop. This mixed-methods study examines whether Romanian youth gravitate toward “spiritual-oriented messages or religious-oriented messages” and are thus, “hardcore listeners” or “casual listeners.” The results of the study highlight Romanian youth’s support of religious/spiritual Hip Hop as well as the ability of religion to foster tolerance. Positioning and Identity-Making in Bucharest Saskia Butler http://ww.duo.uio.no/ IV Abstract In this thesis I explore aspects of identity-making processes among city dwellers in Bucharest, Romania. The unbounded and fragmented cityscape appeared as ambiguous as the social context, where a lack of positively loaded sense of belonging prevailed. Within this ambiguous framework, categories of ‘Others’, proved to be vital for social orientation. On the basis of five and a half months fieldwork in Bucharest, I suggest that ‘positioning’ in relations to ‘Others’, are significant aspects of identity-making processes among Bucharest dwellers, and in particular, the young middle class. ‘Others’ were represented in the social construct of ‘gypsies’, and categories of ill-mannered Romanians. These internal hierarchical orders also reflect a wider context, wherein Romanians subordinate themselves in relation to an idealized image of the West. Subjects and objects for disdain were saturated by notions of the ‘uncivilized’, contrasted, and compared to an idealized image of the ‘civilized West’. The common denominator that cut across various definitions of ‘Others’, both inferior ones in terms of ‘gypsies’, but also the superior one represented by the West, was this frequent reference to ideas of ‘civilized’ and ‘uncivilized’. This dichotomy, served as a navigator in identity-making processes, and was implemented by similarly positioned people to create a space where, positively loaded belonging emerged, while negative portrayals of ‘Others’ functioned to strengthen this sense of belonging.
