07 MAR 2000 Umno-Sik SIK UMNO DIVISION NOMINATES DR MAHATHIR AND ABDULLAH SIK, March 7 (Bernama) -- The Sik Umno division today nominated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for the presidency and deputy presidency respectively in the party elections in May. It also nominated Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Datuk Seri Abdul Ghani Othman and Datuk Seri Abu Hassan Omar for the three vice-president's posts. Sik is the first of the 15 Umno divisions in the state to hold its delegates conference. The candidates were proposed by the division's information chief, Mohamad Hadzir Jaafar, and unanimously supported by 300 delegates by a show of hands. Tan Sri Sulaiman Ninam Shah was nominated for the post of permanent chairman while Pokok Sena Umno division deputy chairman Wan Hanafiah Wan Mat Saman was nominated for the deputy permanent chairman's post. Those nominated for the 25 supreme council seats are Datuk Paduka Dr Abdul Hamid Othman, Datuk Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, Datuk Dr Yusof Noor, Datuk Dr Affifuddin Omar, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, Datuk Seri Osu Sukam, Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob and Datuk Wira Mohd Ali Rustam. KEEPING THE FAITH: PM puts reputation on the line Brendan Pereira February 15, 2006 New Straits Times Feb 14: YESTERDAY was not about the ebullient Datuk Effendi Norwawi being hoisted onto the political mainstage once again, two years after his health scare. It was not about International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz proving that there is life after the Approved Permits fiasco. It was not about Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor showing that there is no such thing as political oblivion in Malaysian politics. It was about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi putting his reputation on the line and banking on 33 ministers and 39 deputy ministers to deliver big over the next two years. The stakes are high for the ruling coalition, and for the man who currently occupies the top job in the country. Fail, and the consequences will be grave. He knows that the reservoir of goodwill which followed the Barisan Nasional’s grand election victory in 2004 is emptying. He knows that after the pundits and armchair critics have exhausted all their arguments in coffee houses, the only thing that would really matter in Malaysia is this — whether the economy is humming. He is aware that the next 24 months will define how well he is judged and how well the BN fares in the next election. There will be little wiggle room for Abdullah and his band of ministers. Day One of their task will be on March 31 — the day the Ninth Malaysia Plan is tabled. Privately, Abdullah likes to use this analogy when describing the challenge that lies ahead for him and his team.

05 MAR 2000 Umno-Ledang LEDANG, SENAI,TENGGARA GO FOR DR MAHATHIR, ABDULLAH MUAR, March 5 (Bernama) -- The Ledang, Senai and Tenggara Umno Divisions in Johor have unanimously renominated Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the post of Umno President and Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for the post of Deputy President. The Ledang Division also nominated Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Abu Hassan Omar as vice presidents and renominated incumbent vice president, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. Everyone would benefit from read- ing the article with an open mind, taking to heart the serious ques- tions it raises about PAS’ direc- tion, and asking themselves where they would like to see Ma- laysia headed — and then think about how one might go about achieving it. This is especially true of those sympathetic to PAS and its agenda of an Islamic Malaysia. Does PAS’ programme and ac- tions go towards achieving its dream? Or, looking at real histori- cal experiences elsewhere, will it instead realise a condition that is only Islamic in name and diktat, but will, in fact, be as distant from the civilization that produced an ibn Khaldun and an al- Khwarizmi, a Rumi and an ibn Rushd, as the Malaysia of today’s is? Sadly, responses to criticisms by some senior PAS figures indicate that such reflection is unlikely to happen. Introduction This paper describes and analyses the process of policy formation in Malaysia, focussing on CRISE’s particular areas of concern. As an introductory comment, it is important to note the criteria behind Malaysia’s inclusion as a CRISE case study and the implications they carry for this document. Malaysia is widely accepted as a country which has been remarkably – perhaps uniquely – successful in managing and containing ethnic conflict in a post-colonial context against expectations. In comparing the records of Malaysia and Ceylon/Sri Lanka, for instance, Donald Horowitz (1989), argues that during decolonisation, expectations were that Ceylon would remain peaceful, whilst Malaysia risked extensive conflict. The reverse has proved to be the case. Without prejudging the conclusions of CRISE’s work, it seems clear that much of Malaysia’s success has been due to its ethnic redistributive policies, which have gone a long way towards redressing the gross economic inequalities left by the colonial period whilst being accompanied by high growth rates for a sustained period of decades. Whilst pertinent questions remain about the political practices of the regime and, perhaps, the level of political inequality in the country, the inclusion of Malaysia in the research project was very much on the grounds of it being a ‘good’ case study, from which to learn both the advantages and pitfalls of ethnic redistribution.
