She restores my soul, She rights my wrongs, She leads me in a path of good things, And fills my heart with songs. Even though I walk, through a dark and dreary land, There is nothing that can shake me, She has said, She won’t forsake me, I’m in Her hand. She sets a table before me, in the presence of my foes, She anoints my head with oil, And my cup overflows. Surely goodness and kindness will follow me, All the days of my life, And I will live in Her house, Forever and ever. • Missa Luba : New Edition and Conductor's Analysis
FOSTER, MARC ASHLEY, D.M.A., Missa Luba: A New Edition and Conductor’s Analysis. (2005) Directed by Dr. William P. Carroll. 123pp. Since 1964 and the first printed edition of Missa Luba by Guido Haazen, this work has been performed countless numbers of times all over the world. Missa Luba continues to have a large number of performances each year, despite the fact that there is very little research available, and the only published edition is wholly insufficient in producing an authentic performance. To date, the following has not been published in any known academic publications: 1) a biography of Guido Haazen, 2) research into the first choir to sing Missa Luba, 3) a detailed explanation of the collective improvisational nature of the work, and 4) a comparison of the folk melodies used as models to the corresponding sections of each Mass movement. The purpose of this document is to provide a new edition of Missa Luba and an analysis of the work useful to a conductor. The reasons why a new edition is needed and what changes are made to the existing edition will be discussed, along with an analysis, which will cover the work’s historical background, structure, and performance practice concerns. The document will incorporate recent research into this subject, especially that of interviews with Guido Haazen prior to his death in 2004, and a more accurate transcription of the original 1958 recording. Also, significant to this project is a description of the ethnic instruments used in the original performances of Missa Luba and suitable modern substitutions.

A CHANTICLEER CHRISTMAS THURSDAY DECEMBER : PM MEMORIAL CHURCH R E L H O K A S I L Y B O T O H P Program Notes by Kip Cranna, Andrew Morgan, Joseph Jennings, Kory Reid, Gregory Peebles, and Jace Wittig Virga Jesse floruit Plainsong Gregorian Chant, named after Pope Gregory I (d .604), is the term applied to the vast repertoire of liturgical plainsong assembled over the course of several hundred years, roughly 700-1300 A.D. There are almost 3,000 extant chants in the Gregorian repertoire, with texts specific to each day of the liturgical year in the Roman Catholic Church. Virga Jesse floruit is an Alleluia for the Feast of the Annunciation during Paschal Time (which in fact is a rare occasion). Alleluia. Alleluia. Virga Jesse floruit: The rod of Jesse has blossomed: Virgo Deum et hominem genuit: a Virgin hath brought forth God and man: pacem Deus reddidit, God hath restored peace, in se reconcilians ima summis, reconciling in Himself the lowest with the highest, Alleluia. Alleluia. o Virgo virginum Josquin Desprez ( c. 1450–1521) Considered one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, Josquin Desprez lived a life steeped in mystery for present-day scholars. The earliest surviving written record dates from 1459, which lists him as an “adult” singer at the cathedral in Milan, where he was employed until 1472. He subsequently worked at the chapel of Duke Galeazzo Sforza. Other posts included serving as a singer in the Papal Chapel in Rome and as court composer to Duke Ercole I of Ferrara.
