Between Brockham and the river bed changes from impermeable Wealden clay to permeable chalk and the increased gradient allows the water table to drop below the river bed. This allows water to escape from the river through swallow holes in the chalk bed and banks, thus reducing the volume of water in the river. Aerial photos show a line of green patches in the fields between Pixham and Mickleham which are the relict swallow holes where the underground water comes to the surface. 18 Surrey Hills C of E Primary School News We continue to have a busy Summer term, at Surrey Hills. Below are some of the highlights: Royal Wedding Street Party Pupils from Surrey Hill C of E Primary School in and Westcott celebrated the Royal Wedding on Friday 18th May. Staff and pupils enjoyed this very British occasion by holding a whole school street party. The children enjoyed delicious party food whilst listening to royal fanfare music. The afternoon concluded in a resounding, whole school chorus of the national anthem. A great start to a royal wedding weekend.

School Council visit to Sight for Surrey On Tuesday 24th April, the School Council visited their chosen charity Sight for Surrey. Sight for Surrey is an ambitious charity offering a lifetime of support for people who are blind or partially sighted, deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing. This visit will give the children the opportunity to learn more about the charity and to experience the various resources available to the people the charity support. Below are some quotes from the children on what they learnt:

• I learnt that when you’re pouring water into a glass, you can put something in it to tell you when it’s full. Beep!

• I learnt that there is a talking pen.

• I learnt that if you’re blind there are watches that tell you the time.

• I learnt that blind people used white canes and blind and deaf people use red and white canes.

Mole Valley Primary Music Festival In April the choir wowed a packed out Dorking Halls audience when they performed at the 2018 Primary Music Festival. The Surrey Hills choir joined with other Mole Valley Primary School choirs to perform ‘Go, Lightning Vikings!’ a rock n roll musical telling the story about life in Viking times. We were incredibly proud of the children, who sang beautifully with great enthusiasm. “Just got back to the South Coast and wanted to thank you all for another excellent evening's entertainment. Your children were a pleasure to work with and the audience obviously had a great time.” George, musical director.

On behalf of Kids for Kids charity, I wish to say thank you to the magazine for the free ads for our bridge drive you published earlier this year. The drive was on 9th May and was very successful. We made more money than last year. Inevitably and thanks to the faithful punters, that will provide more goats, blankets and mosquito nets for the children of Darfur in the Sudan. Slowly but surely these little communities are becoming more self sufficient. Sincerely, Gerald Culliford

St Martin’s church is celebrating Vaughan Williams, first with a recital by Dan Collins, countertenor with the well-known singing group The Sixteen. This is at noon on 7th and will be free with a retiring collection. In the evening at 7.30 there will be a concert with the Martineau Singers and Dan Collins again, with tickets at £10. Then on Sunday 8th the celebration will conclude with a special choral evensong at 6.00.

There is also a Vaughan Williams event at Leith Hill Place, the composer’s home on the slopes of Leith Hill and now cared for by the National Trust. Writer and broadcaster Andrew Green, with poet and musician Rosie Green, will present poetry and prose set to music by Vaughan Williams. The ticket price includes a cold buffet. The Trio Martinu will also be appearing at Leith Hill Place. The group, consisting of violin, cello and piano, will be performing music by Haydn, Brahms and Schubert.

Some of our nearby choral societies are holding their summer concerts in July. Leatherhead choral society celebrates 90 years with a concert featuring Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Handel’s Zadok the Priest. Bookham choral society sings American music and songs. Holmbury St Mary has a concert featuring uplifting mediaeval music, together with folksongs and love songs for choir and harp.

The Dorking Halls has a screening from Glyndebourne – a staging of Handel’s dramatic oratorio Saul. After David has defeated the giant Goliath, the jealous King Saul turns against him, unleashing a trail of violent destructive passions. André Rieu’s annual summer concert, with his famous Johann Strauss Orchestra, is broadcast live and also in a recording the following day.

Watermill Jazz meets every Tuesday evening as usual, with some great names from the jazz world – full details will be on the website.

66 THE PAST IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY; THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY THERE Or do they? The following verse describes a cricket match between ‘Westcott & Milton’ and the ‘Sutton Ramblers’.

Now, gents, I will sing, and my sonnet shall praise The prettiest village that e’er met my gaze- Not Sutton or Cheam, or any of these, But Westcott, near Dorking, with all its fine trees.

Twas early one morn of a bright summer’s day The Sutton young Ramblers went there to play; They played like young kittens, and so did the rest- Both Westcott and Milton, but Sutton did best.

They played in a meadow at the foot of a hill, Where the murmuring brook turned round the old mill, Close by stood a cottage with ivy so green As rural a cottage as ever was seen.

A stately old tree, with body so bare, But foliage so green waved idly there; While hill upon hill leaped gracefully round The beautiful spot of our cricketing ground.

So fair was the scene! But what of the play Of Sutton with Westcott and Milton that day? Each one with a will did manfully try Our Sutton young Ramblers’ play to outvie.

But Cowden, with bat was up to the door- He added his twenty and five to the score; While Brown with the ball soon made the stumps fall Of Jasper and Balchin and Gammon and all.

Sadly, the Westcott & Milton CC’s scorebook has not survived and we know nothing of Jasper, Gammon or Balchin (although readers will recognise the last name). Nor can we be sure where the fixture took place. Is the fact that the one of our former public houses was called ‘The Cricketers’ a clue? And how did the visitors reach Westcott? Probably by steam train, because the match took place on 20th July 1869, two years after the London, and South Coast Railway had been extended from Sutton, through the Mickleham Gap to Dorking.
