The Farmers You Will Meet in Our List Make Their Wines with a Deep Respect for the Soil Where Their Grapes Come From, and the Living Biodiversity of Their Vineyards The farmers you will meet in our list make their wines with a deep respect for the soil where their grapes come from, and the living biodiversity of their vineyards. They work to preserve and pass along the traditions and culture of their local land and communities where the wine is produced, keeping them alive. They care about their vines and grapes, only following natural ways of farming, because a “healthy wine” comes first from “healthy agriculture”. All use at least organic practices (although many winegrowers are even stricter in their methods than what is permitted with organic labeling), and follow biodynamic principles, which is a deep connection between the winegrower and nature. The same respect they apply in the vineyard is then continued into the cellar. These wines are made with natural fermentation, using native yeasts, and adding little to no Sulphites at all. They are un-fined, and un-filtered. As a result, our wines are vibrant, alive, and memorable difficult to forget! The Farmers’ wines you are about to relish are not simply made by winemakers that respect. They are made by nonconformist, defiant mavericks that we are proud to call “artists”, apostates and rebels for whom “respect for Earth” is not a marketing claim, but a way of life. As you a take a sip, read their stories. It’s a different story every time, each with its own traits and character, but with something in common: all of these stories follow the heart of the farmer behind their wine. It’s the story of Dario, who respects Nature, whatever it brings his way, and refuses to use chemicals, no matter what. When a fungal disease attacked his vineyard and destroyed 90% of his crop, Dario turned the surviving grapes into “Favola” (Fable) - a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Tocai, and Ribolla Gialla. It’s the story of Isabella, who harvests her crop by hand and carries boxes piled high with grapes on her shoulders, because the slopes of the vineyards are so steep that no machinery can climb them. It’s the story of Šaša, who one day climbed up his mountain, dug under the rocks, and found (36 feet later and exactly where nobody thought there could possibly be any life) the roots of his Ribolla. These are just a handful of our “Stories of the Heart.” But the list is endless. All of our wines, more than 100, are available by the glass. Cheers!     Dolcetto d'Alba DOC The Bongiovanni farmstead dates back to the early 1950s, when it was purchased by Giovanni Bongiovanni. Giovanni planted a Nebbiolo vineyard where there had been nothing but untamed woodland. He struck gold, yet never bottled his own wine. When he died, the estate was left to his daughter Olga who grew to cover prime hillside vineyards of the Langhe for her own wines. Here, the family only planted native grape varieties and one noble international grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. A good number of innovations have come about thanks to Olga’s nephew, winemaker Davide Mozzone. The Bongiovanni philosophy aims to minimize outside intervention and maximize character and terroir, steering clear of stereotypical wines. While not certified organic, the winery proudly participates in Piedmont’s Green Experience, which is a network of sustainable and organic growers. Dolcetto was and is still considered the wine you’d drink on a lazy Sunday in any given osteria in the stunning countryside of Piedmont. And in fact, because of its versatility and capacity to adapt to very different soil types, it is one of the most widely cultivated varieties in the Langhe area. Bongiovanni has two small parcels in Roddino and Castiglione Falletto with vines aging ten to forty years old. After harvest, the wine ages strictly in stainless steel, preserving the color, aromas and flavors. The wine is neither clarified nor filtered before bottling.     BAROLO DOLCETTO D’ALBA DENOMINAZIONE DI ORIGINE CONTROLLATA 2018 We love Dolcetto. In the local tradition, this grape was cultivated on the best exposures, just above Nebbiolo parcels. Resonating with our own heritage, we dedicate only fine blocks to this variety, so to let it express with plenitude. DESCRIPTION: Historically, Dolcetto was cultivated in prime land, just above Nebbiolo vineyards. At Vajra, we remain loyal to this approach, farming this grape in places of true vocation. Our Dolcetto d’Alba DOC is a homage to a wonderful, often overlooked heritage of Piemonte. It is a pure, vibrant and fruity expression of the variety, ideal for many food pairings from appetizers to pastas and vegetables and light protein such as white meats and egg-based dishes. VARIETY: 100% Dolcetto. VINEYARD AND TERROIR: Multiple estate vineyards with an average age of 25 years. VINTAGE: 2018 was marked by an abundant flowering, a gradual ripening and one of the latest harvests of the decade. Precipitations were exceptional during the entire year, as the dedication of our vineyard team. Such determined work and a meticulous sorting gifted us with healthy grapes, with delicate perfumes and a juice that was pink already upon crushing. This harvest was particularly favorable for the best exposed vineyards, those at high elevation, and the late ripening varietals - but it is giving us great surprises also on the whites and Dolcetto. All the wines are fragrant, deliciously aromatic, with elegant tannins. 2018 reminds 2016 and perhaps even more 2004, and promises to become an elegant and classic vintage. Like the topography, soil and climate, the types of wine produced in these areas vary considerably from one region to another. This part of Italy is extremely prosperous, since it includes the so-called industrial triangle, made up of the cities of Milan, Turin and Genoa, as well as the rich agricultural lands of the Po River and its tributaries.

About the producer MASSERAI LI VELI WINE Puglia has always felt somewhat separate to the rest of Italy, particularly the southern half, the heel: Salento. This limestone peninsula has its own, independent character. Closer to Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece than to Barolo or even Chianti, it’s an area with ancient influences from overseas, strange dialects such as Greki, from its time as an Ancient Greek colony, and unique architecture in the conical shape of trulli stone houses. It is also a region with its own distinct viticulture - the Primitivo grape is its most famous export (named Zinfandel in other parts of the world), but there are many other indigenous Puglian grape varieties too. Puglia has traditionally been a region of outliers, those going against the grain. The Masseria Li Veli winery was built by one such, and is now operated by a family with a similar philosophy. The Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco, an internationally recognised professor of economics in Rome since the 1880s, refused to take an oath of loyalty to Mussolini’s Fascist party in 1931 and left the capital to follow his passion for winemaking instead.

    Villa dei Misteri: The Ancient Wine of Pompeii Everybody knows Italy has a long winemaking historydating back to Roman times, but few are aware of the fact that the same wine the citizens of ancient Rome used to drink is still being produced today. Pompeii (in the Campania region in the south of Italy) is 2000 years old. The city was covered with lava after the volcano, Vesuvio, erupted in 79 B.C. These 18th-century ruins are now visited by more than 2 million tourists each year. What’s new today is the active wine production taking place at that archaeological site! In the 1980s, the Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritagestarted a search beneath the archaeological site to discover the original plants, trees and flowers and recover them after 2000 years had passed. During their research, they discovered grapevines. They turned to Mastroberardino, an historical local winery, known for their efforts to protect and enhance thenative varieties. Researchers asked the winery to handle this piece of the research. The study progressed through several phases and the analysis of the berries and vines remainsin laboratory along with the casts of plants, similar to the amazing casts of the bodies trappedunder the lava. Based upon where the vines were located, the winery was able to reproduce the grapevines with the same density as the original ones Thanks to the numerous books written by Romans, such as Naturalis Historia by Plinio, it was possible to learn more about ancient farming techniques of the vines. In 2001, from this fascinating recovery, "Villa dei Misteri" wine (named after one of the most impressive villas in Pompeii) was born.
