UPDATE November 2012 THE TREASURER has asked to remind you that by the time you receive this ‘UPDATE’ your affiliation fees should have been paid. By the middle of October only half the guilds had paid. Please help Jenifer to get the accounts done on time by paying now if you haven’t already done so. Many Thanks. THE COPY DATE for THE JOURNAL Spring Edition i.e. March is 9th December. Please send copy to [email protected] asap. This request has reached me so I will pass it on........ My name is Gordon MacDonald and I live on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland and would like to take up weaving Harris Tweed, but the problem is obtaining a loom, either new or second hand. I have found a company, Griffith, which manufactures a suitable loom that will weave both double width and single width fabric, but requires an order for 16 individual looms before manufacture will start. As there is a limited population on the island I am including your association in the hope that some of your members or their contacts may have an interest in purchasing a new loom. Each individual would have to contact the manufacturer directly to take the order process forward, but I am hopeful that the target can be reached and new looms produced for a new generation of weavers. I have attached the information sheet that I have received from Griffith. Could you please circulate this to any affiliated guilds of weavers Thank you for your time Gordon MacDonald 5 Lewis St Stornoway Isle of Lewis HS1 2JF Mobile: 07718898115 Home: 01851 705142 Email: [email protected] ******************************************************************************** ************************************ Dear All Please find attached brochure for the Griffith Rapier loom. Griffith designed and manufactured its rapier hand loom initially for use in the Harris Tweed industry but is also used around the world in artisan enterprises and in schools and colleges. Griffith continue to provide support in the form of technical advice to weavers of its Rapier Hand loom from South Africa to Stornoway. The loom is available for sale however we need minimum batches of 16 off to make the loom cost effective. Delivery on a batch is 3-5 months and is priced around £15,000 plus vat and delivery. (Per loom) Griffith will take returnable deposits on looms and will commence manufacture once 16 loom orders are in place. It may also be possible to provide a loan loom for training purposes once a batch of 16 is in place. Regards Dave Watson, Managing Director 9 Walton Road, Pattinson North Ind. Est., Washington, Tyne & Wear and another......... Good morning, I am contacting you as I am searching for a freelance weaver, or a member from your association, that would be willing to work and develop a few pieces for a Fashion Show presentation. Of course, I am willing to offer the salary required in regards to the work and time dedicated. The Show is in April, however knowing the essentials of the collection's management, I would like to be in contact as soon as possible in order to start developing the technique and samples necessary. Our studio is based in London (Islington). We can provide the yarns and material but do not have access to any spinning machine (so the person needs to be able to manage the production on there own). Please do not hesitate to contact me: Alexandra Grignon, 07890057365 / [email protected]. Thank you for your help, looking forward to hearing from you. Best Regards, Alexandra Grignon Voluntary Arts have an interesting web site which you can access. It's on until 16 December 2012. Anyone who took the last Journal, 243, will see that on p.2 there is an advert – a 2 for 1 admission if they take the magazine or the ad with them. The Stratford-upon Avon Guild was asked to put together the final resources room so that the public would understand a little more of weaving processes. Visitors are intrigued to know how it is done and about weaving in general. Guild members will be there on Thursdays and Sundays and look forward to meeting members from other Guilds. More info at www.comptonverney.org.uk. Compton Verney Facebook and Twitter are linked to the Journal. Should all be good for our Guild, the Association and the Journal. AND WEAVERS MIGHT LIKE THIS WEB SITE: www.osloom.org AND LAST BUT BY NO MEANS LEAST another plea for volunteers to join both the JEC and the GPC. We are looking for a suitable person to shadow Jenifer, our Treasurer, for the next year with a view of taking on the job in 2014. The suitable person would ideally have some book-keeping experience and be able to use a computer to prepare spreadsheets and type reports. Shadowing will build on those skills, so they need not be extensive. The successful person will become a key member of a committee whose aims are to improve the services it provides to Guilds and to others. Travel expenses for meetings will be paid by the Association. To a apply, a GPC nomination form will need to be completed and sent to me by 19th January 2013. Those interested should contact me if they would like more information. ([email protected]) AND for the JEC From April 2013 the post of Advertising Manager will be vacant - however we would like to recruit an apprentice as soon as possible in order to allow a phased handover before then. This is now an urgent request so please consider offering your help. We work hard but it is very rewarding – making good friends, learning more about our crafts, widening our horizons and skills base are just a few benefits. You are welcome to join one of our meetings as an observer before deciding to join us (our next meeting is 6th October). Please contact Christina Chisholm, [email protected] for a no obligation chat! If you have any comments or enquiries concerning anything in this Newsletter please contact Valerie Selden at [email protected] or Glebe Place, The Street, Mersham, Kent. TN25 6ND.
