(2) Determine the length of reproductive cycles and the characteristic diel rhythinicity of spawning activities. (J) Evaluate the influence of precipitation, barometric pressure, and water temperature on the presence of a nest and the onset of spawning. (~) Determine if activity cycles exist by measuring fluctuations in daily activity. (5) Compare the changes in the composition of behavior during the spawning cycle. Dr. Rudolph J. Miller served as major adviser and was extremely helpful during all phases of the study. Drs. Roy w. Jones, Troy Dorris, L. Herbert Bruneau, and Larry T. Brown served on the advisory committee and edited the manuscript. Donald E. Maritt suggested the method for computer analysis of the data. The diploid chromosome number, chromosomal formula and fundamental numbers of the three species under study were 2n=46, 20m+26sm and FN=92, 2n=48, 2m+46a and FN=50 and 2n=42, 12sm+14st+16a and FN=68 respectively. These results may open the way for using cytogenetic analysis in the modern taxonomy. INTRODUCTION Fish are represented by 32,900 species; more than 20,000 are marine and 8,000 are living in Neotropical continental waters. -

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) determines the health status of the bodies of water by way of measuring the variations in body shapes of the fish. Species in this environment are said to normally buffer the genetic and environmental stresses during their ontogeny to maintain precise development. FA measures the pattern of morphometric differences of bilateral symmetry of an organism caused by these environmental disturbances. In this study Trichopodus trichopterus was used as bioindicator, to determine the FA in its body collected from Masao River, Agusan del Norte, Philippines. The river is situated and inhabited by congested nearby households. There were 60 species collected using a cast net and local traps. Geometric Morphometric (GM) and Analyses Procrustes ANOVA were used to calculate, show and obtain morphological intraspecific variations. A total of 20 landmarks from 60 samples of fish, 30 per sexual category, were used. These selected points of landmarks were digitized both in left and right side of the specimen images. Then, the 20 landmark coordinates from fish were subjected to Symmetry and Asymmetry Geometric Data (SAGE) software after being digitized using tpsDig2 and being saved as TPS file. The result in procrustes ANOVA showed a significant high level (p < 0.0001) of FA which indicates a high significant variation showing the percentage variation of shapes in deformation grid with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) scores of 70.8115% and 79.8394% in female and male, respectively. -

The limnological habitats are receptors of pollution, thus local fish species richness is a plausible biological indicator to reflect the quality of a particular water body. However, database on species occurrence that corresponds with the water physico-chemistry constituents is often not available. The problem is compounded by the lack of species identification description to assist those working on river and freshwater resource conservation projects. This paper attempts to fill the gaps in the context of Kampar River drainage. Based on sampling exercises conducted from October 2015 to March 2017, an annotated list with visual data for 56 species belonging to 44 genera and 23 families is presented. The water physico-chemistry data is also summarized with the corresponding visual data of limnological zones studied. The species diversity results are further compared with other local drainages and the correlation between area size and their relationship is expressed by y = 17.627e0.0601x. -

Because morphological characters for reliable discrimination of species are lacking, the number of species considered valid has varied by an order of magnitude. In this study, sequences from the DNA barcode region of cytochrome c oxidase I (CO1) and/or internal transcribed spacer (ITS) from specimens from Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Kenya, China and Thailand were analysed together with published sequences from Europe, Africa, Indonesia and North America. Although ITS and CO1 distances among specimens were strongly correlated, distance-based analysis of each marker yielded different groups. Putative species indicated by CO1 distances were consistent with available morphological identifications, while those indicated by ITS conflicted with morphological identifications in three cases. There was little overlap in sequence variation within and between species, particularly for CO1. Although ITS and CO1 distances tended to increase in specimens that were further apart geographically, this did not impair distance-based spe- cies delineation. Phylogenetic analysis suggests a deep division between clades of Clinosto- mum inhabiting the New World and Old World, which parallels the distribution of their principal definitive hosts, the Ardeidae.
