The plants featured are traditionally those that grew in the township of Mountmellick itself, such as oak, blackberry, dog rose, and ivy.Part of the fun of working Mountmellick embroidery is playing around with the stitches and working variations of them. On some historical examples of Mountmellick, there were only a limited number of stitches used. However, due to all their variations, the effect produced was highly patterned and varied.The following features are regarded as being characteristic of Mountmellick work: it is worked in white matt (no shine) thread on white cotton satin jean fabric; the shapes are big and bold and usually floral - the leaves and flowers are usually at least life-size, if not larger; it has a buttonholed edge, usually with a knitted fringe attached; and, lace is not used.Yvette Stanton and Prue Scott are award-winning embroiderers with over 15 years' experience of producing beautiful intricate embroideries. Both Prue and Yvette have a particular love for whitework embroidery. Prue is also a trained botanist and botanical artist, and her beautiful designs are a feature of this book. I use Adobe Photoshop to turn my photographs into ink style drawings, but if Adobe Photoshop is not available, there is a free programme called Gimp. www.gimp.org This can be downloaded and works in a similar manner to Adobe Photoshop. Tutorials for both Gimp and Photoshop are widely available on the internet and by clicking on to www.youtube.com How do you make a start on changing a photograph into a line drawing? Let’s follow the process in simple stages to turn a photograph of a bridge in an industrial area into a line drawing suitable for blackwork embroidery. a. Import the photograph into Photoshop or Gimp 1 Blackwork Journey Blog - August 2013 b. Using the toolbar at the top of the screen go to Layer > Duplicate layer. Work on the duplicate layer to keep the original image intact. c. Next to the Layer button is the Image button. Click on: Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. and the photograph will become black and white. 2 Blackwork Journey Blog - August 2013 d. Next go to Filter > Stylize > Fine edges This will create a “pencil drawing”. e. Now improve the effect by going to: Image > Adjustments. Go to Brightness/Contrast f.     An IntroductIon to MountMellIck EmbroIdery By Liz Almond of Blackwork Journey Irish Mountmellick embroidery was developed around 1825 by Johanna Carter, who taught it to a group of women and girls. It uses matt white cotton threads on white cotton sateen fabric with a slight sheen. There are no open spaces, eyelets, drawn or pulled areas in this style of embroidery, but dense areas of embroidery created by a wide variety of threads and stitches. The plants featured in the design, were those that were found around the town of Mountmellick and included blackberries, oak, fern, dog roses and shamrocks. This style of embroidery is textured and tactile which contrasts with many of the other whitework techniques, such as Ayrshire work, which is densely embroidered on very fine fabric. Mountmellick Work “Embroidery Book” Mary Thomas 1936 Finding the correct material and threads for a new project can be difficult, especially if the materials used are rather obscure. I wanted to use traditional threads and materials which I obtained from Empress Mills, Colne, Lancashire, UK (www.empressmills.co.uk) They are an old established English company from an area that once produced the finest cotton in the world and they still serve clients from across the world. Materials: Medium and heavy weight Mountmellick fabric The fabric needs to be heavy enough to support the weight of the stitching and to withstand frequent washing which white embroidery on white requires. Use the medium weight fabric and pre-wash it before drawing the design with either a water soluble pen or an HB pencil.

    About Weldon’s Practical Needlework In an effort to bring needlework to a then-emerging middle class, several London companies in the last decades of the nineteenth century began publishing needlework patterns and instructions. Unlike other women’s magazines of the time, which ran one or two needlework projects in an issue otherwise filled with fiction, recipes, housekeeping hints, and so forth, these new publications were devoted solely to needlework. Many of these publishers were thread companies, whose ultimate goal in making patterns and instructions more readily available was of course to sell more thread. Weldon’s, however, began as a paper pattern company, and it went on to become one of the most recognized needlework publishers in England. About 1885, Weldon’s began publishing a series of fourteen-page monthly newsletters, available by subscription, each title featuring patterns and instructions for projects using a single technique. They includedWeldon’s Practical Knitter, Weldon’s Practical Crochet, Weldon’s Practical Macramé Lace, and so on. By about 1915, Weldon’s had published 159 issues of Practical Crochet. About 1888, the company began to publish Weldon’s Practical Needlework, each volume of which consisted of twelve issues (one year) of several newsletters bound together with a cloth cover. For example, Volume 12 comprises Practical Crochet; Knitted, Crochet, and Canvas W aistcoats; Practical Drawn Thread Work; Practical Knitter; Practical Mountmellick Embroidery; Practical Smocking; and Practical Stocking Knitter. Each volume contains hundreds of projects, illustrations, information on little-known techniques, glimpses of fashion as it was at the turn of the twentieth century, and brief histories of needlework.

Guadalupe Rd, Suite 109 Mesa, AZ 85202 TELEPHONE (480)898-1838 THE ATTIC 2018 August 1 Issue No. 18-13 www.atticneedlework.com Our August Sampler of the Month Beth was doing some rearranging and merchandising a few weeks ago and came across this beautiful From Chessie & Me sampler reproduction from Linda/Chessie & Me, and exclaimed that we should have this as Sampler of the Month. Well, I knew that it had been a special Esther Eddison 1832 Stitch-Along at Country Sampler several years ago, and that it has been in the marketplace for a while. Many of us fell in love with it when Linda visited us in April of 2017 and joined us at our Sampler Sunday, along with her in-progress ESTHER EDDISON. But somehow I missed some of the very unique feature of this sampler. Here’s what Linda tells us about this sampler: Vivid and unusual, this early 19th Century crewel and cross-stitched sampler is stitched in wool on linen. Within the acorn and block borders Esther has sewn a large two-bay, three- chimney, ivy-covered home with a dated outbuilding topped by a watchful raven. A girl stands next to the house ~ possibly Esther herself ~ and watches as a figure passes led by a dog on a leash. Beneath is possibly the most unique feature … a caption, “Poor blind man.” This is the only example of an editorial comment I’ve ever seen in a sampler.
