Welcome

to a computer- minded Iceland

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 13th World Computer-Chess Championship held at Reykjavík University in Iceland. The event takes place from August 13 to August 21, 2005 and is held under auspices of the ICGA (International Computer Games Association).

Reykjavík University is happy to offer you an exciting computer-chess event consisting of a World Championship with 12 participants, a World Speed-Chess Championship, a Fisher Random , and for the human participants an excursion to some of the most beautiful places in Iceland.

The participants of the event come from six countries: Israel, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Belgium and The USA. In terms of playing strength (Elo rating), this is possibly the strongest chess tournament ever held in Iceland. Moreover, taking into account the continuous increase in playing strength and considering the selected group of twelve participating programs, we can even assume that it is one of the strongest computer-chess tournaments ever held.

We are grateful for the support of our sponsors that have made the event possible. The sponsors are listed on the second page of this booklet: EJS, Icelandair, and Penninn. Of course, Reykjavík University is pleased to be able to contribute by hosting the tournament in cooperation with the National Championship for human chess players.

Finally, we would like to wish all attendees an exciting World Championship, which is likely to further the game of chess as well as stimulate numerous ideas for future scientific research.

1 The Players Meeting The Players Meeting took place on Saturday, August 13, from 18.00 hours to 19.00 hours. The most important result was the establishing of the round robin schedule for 12 players and the drawing of lots. Both are published below.

After the Players Meeting the official opening took place. The first speakers were Yngvi Björnsson and David Levy. The official opening was performed by IGM Fridrik Olafsson. In 1980 Olafsson was as FIDE President (1978-1982) a guest watcher of the 3rd World Championship in Linz, Austria.

The first round The most exciting game of the first round was between Shredder and Crafty. They played the Scotch opening with a of the . For a long time it seemed that Shredder was able to materialize the positional advantage in a full point, but in the end Crafty found some very clear counterplay and managed to arrive at a . World Champion Junior showed its playing strength by choosing a very calm opening and proving its superiority in the endgame. It simply outclassed its opponent.

Two newcomers managed to make a good impression by winning their game straightforwardly. Fruit did so by defeating Jonny and Zappa by defeating The Crazy Bishop. Diep won a though game from IsiChess. The draw between The Baron and Deep Sjeng took many moves (85 in total). With all small excitement at both sides the game was quite balanced.

The second round For many years now, Junior and Shredder are each other´s opponents in WCCC tournaments. Both have a respectable list of successes. Their direct contacts are always interesting, but certainly exciting is also how they perform their race through the pack of the other programs. Drawing a game is considered by the authors as a loss. So, in the first round Shredder had lost “something” against Crafty. The big question for participants and audience was: would Crafty repeat this performance in the second round? It turned out that the result was even better for Crafty, since it won its game. However, we must admit that it was not Crafty´s own credit, but it was a “suicidal action” of Junior, which came fully unexpected for their authors Amir Ban and Shay Bushinsky. They saw how their brainchild sacrificed the small exchange (two pieces against and ) for nothing. Crafty made no error and won the game.

The game Diep - Shredder was completely different. Diep was the revelation of the 12th WCCC in Ramat- Gan by landing at a third place and the main question here is: would it improve its position? Shredder clearly won the opening, but Diep countered very well and managed to turn tables. It even obtained advantage which it could substantiate into the winning of a Pawn. However, the ending was objectively seen drawn, something that both programs understood and agreed upon. Since no program offered a draw, the game went on and it turned out to that Shredder was able to go deeper in its computations than Diep. This gave it a considerable advantage when assessing and evaluating the many variants and its subvariants Finally, Diep risked too much and was completely knocked down by a program that one hour before the end had hoped to draw that game. Replay is advised and surprise is assured.

Two newcomers took the opportunity to take the lead with 2 out of 2, namely Fruit and Zappa. Both programs showed their strength by giving their opponent no real chance after the opening. The actual victory took some time but they were undisputed. The Crazy Bishop won against IsiChess. Jonny was to strong for Futé. After this round it was clear that the tournament would not be walk over for the established programs but that newcomers had announced their arrival.
