Aspects such as morphological stasis and phenotypic plasticity further complicate their taxonomic designation. In this study, we demonstrate that the application of DNA barcoding can alleviate these problems within the Carychiidae (Gastro- poda, Pulmonata). These microsnails are a taxon of the pulmonate lineage and most likely migrated onto land indepen- dently of the Stylommatophora clade. Their taxonomical classification is currently based on conchological and anatomical characters only. Despite much confusion about historic species assignments, the Carychiidae can be unambiguously subdi- vided into two taxa: (i) Zospeum species, which are restricted to karst caves, and (ii) Carychium species, which occur in a broad range of environmental conditions. The implementation of discrete molecular data (COI marker) enabled us to cor- rectly designate 90% of the carychiid microsnails. The remaining cases were probably cryptic Zospeum and Carychium taxa and incipient species, which require further investigation into their species status. Within Ariantinae, C. obtusus stands out because of its aberrant cylindrical shell shape. Here, we present phylogenetic trees based on these five marker sequences and discuss the position of C. obtusus and phylogeographical scenarios in comparison with previously published results. Our results provide strong support for the sister-group relationship between Cylindrus and Arianta confirming previous studies and imply that the split between the two genera is quite old. The tree reveals a phylogeographical pattern of Ariantinae with a well-supported clade comprising the Balkan taxa which is the sister group to a clade with individuals from Alpine localities. -

Riporto questo taxon solo perché compare nel “Catalogo annotato” mediterraneo. Non è riportato da Thompson né da Pruvot-Fol per il Mediterraneo; compare invece sul CLEMAM. Pleurobranchus membranaceus (Montagu 1815) La foto rappresenta un esemplare di piccola taglia (3 cm) presumibilmente giovanile da me raccolto in località Antignano Miramare, il cui aspetto corrisponde poco alla descrizione della forma adulta per avere un mantello che ricopre quasi interamente il piede, mentre nell’adulto questo è debordante su tutti lati. Tuttavia l’epidermide è cosparsa di piccoli tubercoli retrattili come nell’adulto. La forma della conchiglia corrisponde poi a quella raffigurata in Pruvot-Fol, con spira praticamente assente. In Thompson invece la conchiglia ha un aspetto diverso, ma è riferita ad esemplare molto giovane di pochi millimetri. Il colore della conchiglia fresca è rosato-ocraceo e le dimensioni sono circa pari a metà di quelle dell’animale. Pleurobranchus testudinarius Cantraine, 1835 Non ho mai trovato questa specie e la foto proviene dalle ricerche via Internet. L’aspetto del mollusco è tipico per la serie di grossi tubercoli a base poligonale presenti sull’epidermide e per la profonda incisione del lato anteriore del mantello nella quale compaiono i rinofori. La conchiglia dovrebbe essere presente solo allo stadio giovanile, ma il condizionale è d’obbligo; il suo aspetto è simile a quello della conchiglia della specie precedente ed è ben raffigurata in Pruvot-Fol. -

Clements Co-Advisor: Prof. K. Steensma 1 Abstract Preserving the earth’s remaining biodiversity is a major conservation concern. Especially in areas where urban development threatens to take over prime species habitat, protecting green spaces can be an effective method for conserving local biodiversity. Establishing biological inventories of these green species can be crucial for the appropriate management of them and for the conservation of the species which use them. This particular study focused on a recently preserved forest plot, just 25 acres in size, which is now known as the Blaauw ECO Forest. The Blaauw ECO Forest was acquired by Trinity Western University in 2013 to serve as an ecological preserve where students and staff can conduct ecological research and conservation work. After ten months of research and over 100 hours of onsite observations, over 250 species of flora and fauna have been documented inhabiting or using the forest (e.g. as a breeding site). Throughout the duration of this study, several large mammals such as coyotes (Canis latrans), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and black bears (Ursus americanus) have been documented using the forest which highlights the forest’s use as patch habitat. Several provincially blue- listed species have also been seen in the forest, the Pacific Sideband snail (Monadenia fidelis) and Northern Red-legged Frog (Rana aurora) in particular, and these species may testify to the forest’s rich ecology. -

Purpose/Executive Summary 1.1 This report provides an update on the work undertaken on the Area Capital Roads Programme for 2019/20 financial year. 2. Recommendations 2.1 Members are asked to note the contents of the report. 3. Implications 3.1 Resource – As detailed in report. 3.2 Legal – Under Section 34 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 the Council, as Roads Authority, has a duty of care to manage and maintain the adopted road network. 3.3 Community (Equality, Poverty and Rural) – there is a risk that should road conditions contuse to deteriorate access to minor rural roads and residential streets may become more restrictive as precedence is given to maintaining the strategic road network. 3.4 Climate Change / Carbon Clever – in relation to Carbon Emissions the Service provides specialist training for all operatives in respect to fuel efficient driving, and route plans are in place to achieve the most efficient routing of vehicles. 3.5 Risk – Where a Roads Authority is unable to demonstrate that it has made adequate provision for the upkeep and safety of its adopted road network, as can be reasonably expected, it may lead to a greater risk to unable to defend claims made against it. 3.6 Gaelic - This report has no impact on Gaelic considerations 4. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Sandelzhausen is an Early/Middle Miocene (Mammal Neogene zone MN5) fossil site near Mainburg, S Germany, and despite its small size it harbors a rich fossil record. Hundreds of fossil continental mollusks, almost exclusively pulmo- nates snails, were recovered during the excavations, but never received due attention by researchers. Here, the second part of a formal taxonomical treatment of the fossil pulmonates from Sandelzhausen is presented, dealing with the superfam- ilies Succineoidea, Testacelloidea and Helicoidea, and including the description of a new hygromiid species. The follow- ing species were found in the material: Succinea minima (Succineidae); Palaeoglandina sp. (Spiraxidae); Testacella zellii (Testacellidae); Klikia cf. coarctata (Elonidae); Cepaea cf. eversa, Cepaea cf. sylvestrina and Tropidomphalus cf. incras- satus (Helicidae); ?Helicodonta sp. and Helicodontidae indet. (Helicodontidae); Leucochroopsis kleinii and Urticicola perchtae sp. nov. (Hygromiidae). Key words: Gastropoda, MN5 European Mammal Neogene zone, Pulmonata, Stylommatophora, Urticicola perchtae new species Introduction The Sandelzhausen fossil site is one of the most important continental sites in Europe (Moser et al. 2009a) and its bounty include hundreds of specimens of gastropods.
