SPRING 2021 3 CROSIER VOCATION DIRECTOR REFLECTS ON TRUTH AND BEAUTY OF CROSIER RELIGIOUS LIFE By Fr. Alex Juguilon, osc

According to the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC), a professional organization dedicated to the future of religious life in the Catholic Church, there are approximately 750 religious institutes and societies of apostolic life in the United States. We Crosiers are one of them. With so many options to choose from, why would a young man

decide to choose our way of consecrated life? Crosiers invite young men to consider Crosier Religious Life!

As I pondered this question, I thought of the words of Nobel Prize-winning and fidelity to our way of life. There is beauty in the symbolism of our red and physicist Richard Feynman, “You can recognize truth by its beauty and white cross, which reminds us of the blood and water that flowed from Jesus’ simplicity.” As I reflected on his statement, I thought about the ways in which heart after His death (John 19:34). Racism has become more prevalent in recent months. It’s taken center stage in political arenas, in the media, in local communities and even within families. This destructive behavior isn’t unique to the United States; it extends globally. We asked two Crosiers to share their insights on the subject and their experiences.

Going abroad and having an opportunity to be immersed in a new country’s society and way of life was already beyond my expectations when I was ordained as a priest in Indonesia, but following the will of God in our lives is the most fulfilling thing we will ever do.

By Fr. Ferdy “Ilo” Susilo, osc

For 35 months, I was a member of the Conventual Priory of the Holy Cross in Phoenix before returning to Indonesia at the beginning of 2021. It was a journey of acknowledging God’s will and letting Him make straight my path in service within the Crosier Order, reflecting on Proverbs 3:5–6, “Trust the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Coming from Indonesia with limited international experience and a short preparation to serve the Crosier Global Development Office (GDO) in the United States, I considered myself lucky to be mentored by the late Br. Albert Becker, osc, and encouraged by the late Fr. Tom Carkuff, osc, to adapt, contribute and reach my potential in many ways. The first year of living in the priory, I learned what I called “survival skills”—communicating in English, understanding American culture, internalizing deeper religiosity by participating in daily liturgies and various activities—while with great curiosity, learning about the GDO and fundraising as a ministry. Having Br. Albert as my mentor, I learned directly from him the soul, concepts, practices and system or organization of our development office. In my second year, I learned interpersonal skills Fr.
