The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner

CLOSED

 Wednesday, July 4  Saturday, July 7

Actors aren't the only ones trying to make it in Hollywood . . . At twenty-three, Ruth Saunders left her childhood home in Massachusetts and headed west with her seventy-year-old grandma in tow, hoping to make it as a screenwriter. Six years later, she has hit the jackpot when she gets The Call: the sitcom she wrote, The Next Best Thing, has gotten the green light, and Ruthie's going to be the showrunner. But her dreams of Hollywood happiness are threatened by demanding actors, number-crunching executives, an unrequited crush on her boss, and her grandmother's impending nuptials. Set against the fascinating backdrop of show business culture, with an insider's ear for writer's room showdowns and an eye for bad backstage behavior and set politics, Jennifer Weiner's new novel is a rollicking ride on the Hollywood roller coaster, a heartfelt story about what it's like for a young woman to love, and lose, in the land where dreams come true.

The Hypnotist's Love Story by Liane Moriarty

From the author of critically acclaimed What Alice Forgot comes a wonderfully fun, insightful novel about the crazy things we do for love.

The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

USA Today’s #1 Hot Fiction Pick for the summer, The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to in 1922 and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous silent-film star and an icon of her generation, a fifteen-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita, Kansas, to study with the prestigious Denishawn School of Dancing in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone, who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle, a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip, has no idea what she's in for. Young Louise, already stunningly beautiful and sporting her famous black bob with blunt bangs, is known for her arrogance and her lack of respect for convention. Ultimately, the five weeks they spend together will transform their lives forever. For Cora, the city holds the promise of discovery that might answer the question at the core of her being, and even as she does her best to watch over Louise in this strange and bustling place she embarks on a mission of her own. And while what she finds isn't what she anticipated, she is liberated in a way she could not have imagined. Over the course of Cora's relationship with Louise, her eyes are opened to the promise of the twentieth century and a new understanding of the possibilities for being fully alive. Drawing on the rich history of the ,'30s, and beyond--from the orphan trains to Prohibition, , and the onset of the Great Depression to the burgeoning movement for equal rights and new opportunities for women--Laura Moriarty's The Chaperone illustrates how rapidly everything, from fashion and hemlines to values and attitudes, was changing at this time and what a vast difference it all made for Louise Brooks, Cora Carlisle, and others like them.

The Orphanmaster by Jean Zimmerman

From a debut novelist, a gripping historical thriller and rousing love story set in 17th-century Manhattan. Orphan children are going missing, and among those looking are a quick-witted 22-year-old trader and a dashing British spy.

The Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult

A life hanging in the balance…a family torn apart. The #1 internationally bestselling author Jodi Picoult tells an unforgettable story about family, love, and letting go. Edward Warren, twenty-four, has been living in Thailand for five years, a prodigal son who left his family after an irreparable fight with his father, Luke. But he gets a frantic phone call: His dad lies comatose, gravely injured in the same accident that has also injured his younger sister Cara. With her father's chances for recovery dwindling, Cara wants to wait for a miracle. But Edward wants to terminate life support and donate his father's organs. Is he motivated by altruism, or revenge? And to what lengths will his sister go to stop him from making an irrevocable decision? Lone Wolf explores the notion of family, and the love, protection and strength it's meant to offer. But what if the hope that should sustain it, is the very thing that pulls it apart? Another tour de force from Jodi Picoult, Lone Wolf examines the wild and lonely terrain upon which love battles reason.

The Columbus Affair by Steve Berry (Ballantine Books)

He was called by many names - Columb, Colom, Colón - but we know him as Christopher Columbus. Many questions about him exist: Where was he born, raised, and educated? Where did he die? How did he discover the New World? None have ever been properly answered. And then there is the greatest secret of all. From Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author, comes an exciting new adventure - one that challenges everything we thought we knew about the discovery of America. Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Tom Sagan has written hard-hitting articles from hot spots around the world. But when a controversial report from a war- torn region is exposed as a fraud, his professional reputation crashes and burns. Now he lives in virtual exile - haunted by bad decisions and the shocking truth he can never prove: that his downfall was a deliberate act of sabotage by an unknown enemy. But before Sagan can end his torment with the squeeze of a trigger, fate intervenes in the form of an enigmatic stranger with a request that cannot be ignored. Zachariah Simon has the look of a scholar, the soul of a scoundrel, and the zeal of a fanatic. He also has Tom Sagan's estranged daughter at his mercy. Simon desperately wants something only Sagan can supply: the key to a 500-year-old mystery, a treasure with explosive political significance in the modern world. For both Simon and Sagan the stakes are high, the goal intensely personal, the consequences of opposing either man potentially catastrophic. On a perilous quest from Florida to Vienna to Prague and finally to the mountains of Jamaica, the two men square off in a dangerous game. Along the way, both of their lives will be altered - and everything we know about Christopher Columbus will change.

News from the "Bookies" Discussion Group: The "Bookies" met in June to discuss The Songlines by Bruce Chatwin. This book, published in 1987, set off sparks of controversy in our discussion. The author, Chatwin, had stated this travel exploration of Aboriginal culture in Australia was actually a novel. Among our members, we bandied about the 'validity' of this richly laden tale. A mixture of philosophical inquiry and narrative reporting or just plain good storytelling, we surmised there was plenty to discover. A fascinating reflection on Aboriginal 'songlines' or 'dreamtracks' that map the Australian landscape into being.

Our next book is a Mystery novel entitled A Long Finish: an Aurelio Zen Mystery by Michael Dibdin. Anti-hero detective Aurelio Zen has to drink in the climate and suspicious wine culture if he is to solve the murder contaminating Italy's wine industry. This series of detective Zen novels by British author, Dibdin, may also be seen on PBS television! The "Bookies" will discuss the novel on Tuesday, July 31 at 7 pm. Feel free to stop at the Circulation Desk to pick up a copy. Feel free to ask for a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk. We hope you will attend and enjoy a lively, informal discussion.

Books in Bloom Book Group Friday, July 13, 10:30 am Do you love to read? Do you enjoy arranging fresh flowers or silk flowers? Would you like to combine your two interests and share them with a group? We are a Book Discussion/Flower Arranging group that meets on the 2nd Friday of each month at 10:30-12 noon in the Small Conference Room. Our goal is to choose a book to discuss each month and then to interpret it with individual flower arrangements (fresh or silk). The arrangements are made by you at home and are brought to the meeting: they can be symbolic of the characters or themes in the book.

Books will be ordered by Maureen Hines, Group Leader, and will be available at the Library. Just bring yourself, your creativity, and a sense of fun to the meeting. We will share a love of books and a love or arranging flowers--No expertise is needed. This program is free and sponsored by the Goodnow Library.

July's title is: In an instant : a family's journey of love and healing by Lee and Bob Woodruff.

In January 2006, the Woodruffs seemed to have it all–a happy marriage and four beautiful children. Lee was a public relations executive and Bob had just been named co-anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. Then, while Bob was embedded with the military in Iraq, an improvised explosive device went off near the tank he was riding in. He and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, were hit, and Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury that nearly killed him.

In an Instant is the frank and compelling account of how Bob and Lee’s lives came together, were blown apart, and then were miraculously put together again–and how they persevered, with grit but also with humor, through intense trauma and fear. Here are Lee’s heartfelt memories of their courtship, their travels as Bob left a law practice behind and pursued his news career and Lee her freelance business, the glorious births of her children and the challenges of motherhood.

Bob in turn recalls the moment he caught the journalism "bug" while covering Tiananmen Square for CBS News, his love of overseas assignments and his guilt about long separations from his family, and his pride at attaining the brass ring of television news-being chosen to fill the seat of the late Peter Jennings. And, for the first time, the Woodruffs reveal the agonizing details of Bob's terrible injuries and his remarkable recovery. We learn that Bob's return home was not an end to the journey but the first step into a future they have learned not to fear but to be grateful for. In an Instant is much more than the dual memoir of love and courage. It is an important, wise, and inspiring guide to coping with tragedy-and an extraordinary drama of marriage, family, war, and nation. A percentage of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury.
