Cinematic Persona of Mercedes Gleitze Ciara Chambers, Un
1 An Advertiser’s Dream: The Construction of the “Consumptionist” Cinematic Persona of Mercedes Gleitze Ciara Chambers, University of Ulster Abstract: Mercedes Gleitze was a British endurance swimmer who garnered huge public interest in the 1920s and 1930s. Celebrated for her athletic endeavours and philanthropic work, she was one of the first sportswomen to endorse a range of products, and most famously became a “poster girl” for Rolex. At a time when Edward Bernays was developing the psychoanalytic theories of his uncle, Sigmund Freud, to expand the fields of advertising and public relations, the media became increasingly interested in celebrities and the products they promoted. This article will examine the way the media covered Gleitze’s attempts to break world records and how coverage of her in the press and newsreels expanded beyond her athletic prowess to delve into her personal life and financial affairs. It will also consider how Gleitze became a symbol of expanding consumerism and explore how the tensions between her “new woman” status and her commodified persona were framed in the cinema. The article will also offer a consideration of how newsreels, a resource that has been underutilised by film scholars and historians, can help to inflect debates about contemporary popular culture, shifting female identities and burgeoning consumerism. In a plot that might have been taken from a Hollywood movie, in the mid-1920s a young British soldier serving in India writes to famous endurance swimmer Mercedes Gleitze after falling in love with her photograph. As she often replies directly to fan letters, Gleitze strikes up a correspondence with the man, William Farrance, and several months later, despite having never met him, accepts his proposal of marriage. -

From the President of the Board of Trustees Another highly successful year of teams and workshops with scientists from all over the world has come to a close. On January 31, 2000, ISSI had its unofficial fifth anniversary (the foundation was set up in January 1995). I think this fact was pretty much forgotten as a result of the continu- ing, extraordinary commitment of the Institute’s directorate and staff to their activities. The Board of Trustees saw the departure of one of its founding members, Professor Andreas Ludi, through retirement. However, it now has two new members, Professor Urs Würgler, University of Bern, replacing Professor Ludi, and Dr. Claude Nicollier, ESA astronaut from Switzerland. We are most pleased to welcome our distinguished colleagues to the Board of Trustees. Fulfilling one of the recommendations of the special committee established by the European Space Agency (ESA) two years ago, members of the Science Committee now have terms limited to three years. All members accepted this new arrangement, and in late autumn 1999 the Science Committee continued its activities with its first new rotating members. Due to the increased number of applications for the financial support of national science projects and the limited governmental funding available, ISSI’s funding from the Swiss government was to be reduced. Based on action by the ISSI Directorate, in concert with the President of the Board, the Director of the Swiss Science Office, State Secretary Charles Kleiber, decided upon special measures to compensate for the reduced contributions to ISSI for the next business year and to pro- vide some increase in the years to come. -

It also was an important time for German film. A time full of wonder and ideas. Film in the Weimar Republic gave rise to aesthetic elements like leitmotifs, archetypes and the term genre – that still have an influence on cinema today. Weimar directors like Murnau, Lang, Lubitsch, Pabst, Sternberg, Wilder and Ruttmann rose to become legends. Their movies made stars like Marlene Dietrich, Louise Brooks, Emil Jannings and Conrad Veidt go down in cinema history. GREENING WILDLIFE DOCUMENTARY Morgan Richards The loss of wilderness is a truth so sad, so overwhelming that, to reflect reality, it would need to be the subject of every wildlife film. That, of course, would be neither entertaining nor ultimately dramatic. So it seems that as filmmakers we are doomed either to fail our audience or fail our cause. — Stephen Mills (1997) Five years before the BBC’s Frozen Planet was first broadcast in 2011, Sir David Attenborough publically announced his belief in human-induced global warming. “My message is that the world is warming, and that it’s our fault,” he declared on the BBC’s Ten O’Clock News in May 2006. This was the first statement, both in the media and in his numerous wildlife series, in which he didn’t hedge his opinion, choosing to focus on slowly accruing scientific data rather than ruling definitively on the causes and likely environmental impacts of climate change. Frozen Planet, a seven-part landmark documentary series, produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and largely co-financed by the Discovery Channel, was heralded by many as Attenborough’s definitive take on climate change. It followed a string of big budget, multipart wildlife documentaries, known in the industry as landmarks1, which broke with convention to incorporate narratives on complex environmental issues such as habitat destruction, species extinction and atmospheric pollution. David Attenborough’s The State of the Planet (2000), a smaller three-part series, was the first wildlife documentary to deal comprehensively with environmental issues on a global scale. -

The program, scheduled through August 26, will also include such film classics as Carl Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc;" Pudovkin's "Mother;" Erich von Stroheim's "Greed;" F.W. Murnau's "The Last Laugh;" Eisenstein's "Potemkin;" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," one of the most controversial films of its time. Thirty-seven pictures were selected by Beaumont Newhall, Director of the George Eastman House, who is responsible for organizing the current photographic exhibition, "Photo Eye of the 20s," to which "Kino Eye of the 20s" is a companion program. Mr. Newhall will appear at the Thursday evening performance, July 30 at 8 p.m., fjhen he will introduce the Murnau film "Sunrise" and discuss the series. A strong kinship between photography and film existed in this decade, when the film found its syntax and structure, according to Mr. NeT;hall. "In a quarter of a century the movies had grown from a vaudeville novelty to a distinct and po';erful art form." The decade saw the production of some of the greatest films ever made.
