It takes a look back at the most memorable films produced during that time. The film includes commentary bits by film scholars as well as contemporary filmmakers. The Weimar Republic, between 1918 and 1933, was the most free and liberal state on German soil – a wild epoch, shaped by political change, economic crisis and cultural lustre. It also was an important time for German film. A time full of wonder and ideas. Film in the Weimar Republic gave rise to aesthetic elements like leitmotifs, archetypes and the term genre – that still have an influence on cinema today. Weimar directors like Murnau, Lang, Lubitsch, Pabst, Sternberg, Wilder and Ruttmann rose to become legends. Their movies made stars like Marlene Dietrich, Louise Brooks, Emil Jannings and Conrad Veidt go down in cinema history. The Weimar Republic produces a variety of iconic films like Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Metropolis or People on Sunday. Wunderschön, unschuldig und mysteriös zugleich, wirkt diese Frau. Das schwarze, kurze Haar, welches ihrem Gesicht einen strengen Rahmen verleiht – unverkennbar. DIE BÜCHSE DER PANDORA hebt sich in strahlenden Buchstaben von dem einfachen, dunklen Hintergrund ab. Das Uraufführungsplakat des Films DIE BÜCHSE DER PANDORA aus dem Jahr 1929, entworfen von dem ungarischen Plakatdesigner Josef Bottlik, welcher u.a. auch für die berühmten Plakate zu METROPOLIS (DE 1927) verantwortlich war, zählt heute wohl zu einem der ikonischen Filmplakate der Filmgeschichte. Sie gilt als Wedekinds Hauptwerk. The American Venus (1926), Source: BFI National Archive/Paramount Pictures Opening Pandora’s Box BFI uncovers rare Technicolor footage of Louise Brooks in living colour For Immediate release: 30 April 2018, London The BFI today announces the discovery of a cache of extremely rare Technicolor film fragments from the 1920s held by the BFI National Archive, including previously unseen footage of Louise Brooks dancing in colour. The very image of the modern woman, this tantalising glimpse of Louise Brooks comes from The American Venus (1926), her first credited film role and is one of the only images we have of her in colour. The feature is believed lost with the exception of footage from the film’s trailer, held by Berkeley Art Museum and The Library of Congress. It is thought that this extremely short extract discovered by the BFI may come from a costume test. The fragment from The American Venus (1926) was found alongside material from The Far Cry (1926), The Fire Brigade (1926) and Dance Madness (1926) within a copy of Black Pirate (1926), donated to the Archive by The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in 1959. In the same print of Black Pirate, there is also a test shot for historical drama Mona Lisa (1926) starring Hedda Hopper, the ‘Queen of the Quickies’ and legendary acerbic Hollywood gossip columnist for the LA Times, whose biting wit was recently portrayed by Judy Davis in award-winning TV series Feud. The fragment shows Hedda Hopper as Mona Lisa in repose, one assumes, about to be painted by Leonardo da Vinci.

1JSL, Volume 1 (2005), 1–18 Hideaki Fujiki American Film Star Unsettling Japanese Culture: A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Clara Bow’s Image in 1920s Japan1 Hideaki FUJIKI In this essay, I examine the star formation of Clara Bow in relation to the rise of consumer culture and modern girls in Japan during the latter half of the 1920s. While her original images were produced in the United States, she was identified as a representative of modern girls and associated with the new audiences who were recognized as modern girls and/or the petit bourgeois class. In being so, this American star functioned to disclose contradictions between her fans’ consuming activity and their national identity, but concurrently induced reactionary discourses. Her screen persona balanced its flapper-sensationalism and other properties, such as her seemingly spontaneous characterization, socially marginalized positions, and active physical movements. This ambiguity about the star’s attributes allowed Japanese media to take advantage of this star as a controversial yet lucrative subject. It follows that the vernacular formation of this star persona involved cultural and even political conflicts among her fans’ self-defining identities, critics’ valuations and evaluations, and governmental directions. While her fans’ activity increased the diversity and mobility of people’s identities and values in the nation, critics mostly was bent on prescribing them into either/or categories of binary oppositions, such as American versus Japanese and modern versus pre-modern. Thus, the American stars unsettled Japanese culture, but turned out to enhance the reactionary trend in which to confine Japanese people into a monolithic identity.

Bow, Clara (29 July 1905-27 Sept. 1965), film actress, was born Clara Gordon Bow in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Robert Bow, a frequently unemployed waiter and handyman, and Sarah Gordon, his mentally ill wife. Bow attended Public School 98 in Sheepshead Bay until the eighth grade, when she left to become a doctor's receptionist. Bow regarded herself as "the worst looking kid on the street," but at age fourteen she won a personality contest, and in 1921 she received a prize from Fame and Fortune magazine: a small part in Beyond the Rainbow, starring Billie Dove. Bow was cut from the film, but another director saw her photo in a movie magazine and cast her as a spunky stowaway in Down to the Sea in Ships (1922). The show business daily Variety noted "It is Clara Bow that lingers . when the picture has gone." Signing for $50 per week with producer B. P. Schulberg's Preferred Pictures in 1923, Bow sometimes worked on three films simultaneously. In 1924, the year she was chosen by the Western Association of Motion Picture Advertisers as a WAMPAS Baby Star, or star of the future, Bow appeared as Orchid McGonigle, a reformed gang member, in Grit, based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald story. A representative, according to British film historian David Thomson, of "the first generation to be raised on films," she became a symbol of the exuberance and moral emancipation of the Roaring Twenties. Thomson called Bow "the first actress intent on arousing sexual excitement who is not ridiculous." Bow's reputation and range grew with The Plastic Age (1925), produced by Schulberg.

Screening Modernity: Cinema and Sexuality in Ann-Marie MacDonald’s Fall On Your Knees CANDIDA RIFKIND NN-MARIE MACDONALD’S Fall On Your Knees folds documented twentieth-century events into a fiction about the uncertainties of A the past. MacDonald’s array of historical references is matched by the breadth of her literary allusions which, as Jennifer Andrews points out, “cultivates a consciously metafictional approach to the writing of fic- tion” (9). While MacDonald appeals to other literary texts and to the his- torical record, she also disrupts the dominance of the written word by incorporating songs and visual images into the story. MacDonald writes early twentieth-century Cape Breton and New York through attention to the popular culture of the era, thereby creating an effect of the historically real and opening up the female characters’ possibilities for self-fashioning. Fall On Your Knees is obsessed with all aspects of the visual, from dreams and visions to paintings, photographs, and films. This fascination appears in descriptions of visual artifacts throughout the novel but also in the ab- sorption of visual culture, particularly the semiotics of silent films, into the narrative itself. The circulation of early twentieth-century cinematic images and thematics within the narrative economy is most active around the char- acter of Frances Piper, whose sexual transgressions are represented in de- scriptions that cross the boundary between word and image. The very beginning of Fall On Your Knees mobilizes such interplays between the written and the visual; the prologue title, “Silent Pictures,” signals that the novel will absorb photographic and cinematic images into its very form.

HOLLYWOOD ON THE HUDSON SURVEYS NEW YORK’S ROLE IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF MODERN AMERICAN FILMMAKING BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS Hollywood on the Hudson: Filmmaking in New York, 1920–39 September 17 - October 19, 2008 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters New York, September 11, 2008—Hollywood on the Hudson: Filmmaking in New York, 1920- 1939, a month-long exhibition that showcases New York City’s seminal yet rarely recognized role in the establishment of the modern American film industry between the two world wars, is presented at The Museum of Modern Art, from September 17 through October 19, 2008. More than 25 feature films and many shorts, including early sound films—musicals, comedies, animated films, and documentaries—offer a survey of filmmaking in New York during the hegemony of Hollywood, from D. W. Griffith’s return from the West Coast in 1919 to the World’s Fair of 1939. Screenings include pioneering sound films shot at the Paramount Studios in Astoria, Queens, and performances by Broadway luminaries such as Louise Brooks, Marion Davies, the Marx Brothers, Gloria Swanson, and Rudolph Valentino. Hollywood on the Hudson is co-organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art; and Richard Koszarski, on whose book, Hollywood on the Hudson: Film and Television in New York from Griffith to Sarnoff (Rutgers University Press, 2008), the exhibition is based. The exhibition recalls a point during which an industry built on centralized authority began to listen, for the first time, to a range of independent voices in cinema, each with their own ideas about what the movies could say and do.
