    OTHER CHURCHES IN CATRINE THE UNITED SECESSION CHURCH (Later: The United Presbyterian Church) he 1891 Census states that in its early days the population of Catrine “…contained a goodly sprinkling of Dissenters…some of whom travelled to Cumnock to the TWhig Kirk at Rigg, near Auchinleck; but a much larger number went to the Secession Church at Mauchline. The saintly Mr Walker, minister there, becoming frail and not able to attend to all his flock, this (ie.1835) was thought to be a suitable time to take steps to have a church in Catrine”. An application for a site near the centre of the village was made to the Catrine Cotton Works Company, but this was refused by the then resident proprietor who said that: “He could not favour dissent.” A meeting of subscribers was held on 16th June 1835 when it was decided to approach Mr Claud Alexander of Ballochmyle with a request for ground. Mr Alexander duly granted them a site at the nominal sum of sixpence per fall. (A fall was equal to one square perch – about 30.25 square yards.) Another meeting of subscribers on 12th April 1836 authorised obtaining a loan of up to £350 to cover the cost of erecting a building on the site at the foot of Cowan Brae (i.e. at the corner where the present day Mauchline Road joins Ballochmyle Street). James Ingram of St.Germain Street, father of the eminent architect Robert Samson Ingram of Kilmarnock, was appointed to draw out plans. A proposal was approved to place a bottle containing the County newspaper in the foundation.

The aim of the work is to collect those pieces, ancient and modern, which, scattered throughout various publications, are inaccessible to many readers ; and to glean from, oral recitation the floating relics of a former age that still exist in living remembrance, as well as to supply such in- formation respecting the subject or author as maybe deemed interesting. The songs of Burns—save, perhaps, a few of the more rare—having been already collected in numerous editions, and consequently well known, will form no part of the Repository. In distinguishing the Ballads and Songs of Ayrshire, the Editor has been, and will be, guided by the connec- tion they have with the district, either as to the author or subject ; and now that the First Series is before the public, he trusts that, whatever may be its defects, the credit at least will be given Jiim of aiming, how- ever feebly, at the construction of a lasting monument of the lyrical literature of Ayrshire.

    Auchinleck House Ayrshire Photo: Bill McVey Simpson & Brown restored Auchinleck House between the late 1980s and the final phase of work which completed in 2001. The house was built between 1755 and 1762 by Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, the father of James Boswell. It has been suggested that it might have been designed by John Adam, but there is no documentary evidence for this. The old-fashioned “parade” planning suggests that it may have been designed by Lord Auchinleck himself. It is, however, highly likely that some of the craftsmen who built the house had worked with John and Robert Adam on Dumfries House nearby. The pavilions are later additions (1773 - 1774), built in a different stone, and although very small they contribute immensely to the composition as a whole. James Boswell inherited Auchinleck House in 1782 and it continued to be occupied by branches of the Boswell family until about 1970. By 1985, however, the lead had been stripped from the roof, all the windows had been smashed and dry rot was rampant throughout the structure. In 1986 the house was sold to the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. Simpson & Brown carried out an initial phase of work in the late 1980s primarily to deal with the dry rot and other emergency works. The roof was repaired to stop further water penetration and the building was allowed to dry out naturally. Structurally unsafe timber was replaced and all sound timber panelling was dismantled and retained for refixing at a later date. The windows and the stone work were carefully repaired.

Its compilation has been attended with much more labour and expense than those unacquainted with its details might suppose—the Lists for the Forty- six Parishes having been prepared, and at a later date revised, in each Parish. The Parishes are arranged alphabetically. PREFACE. The diiSculties attending a first attempt at present- ing so very full a List of the Inhabitants of a whole County, are pleaded in excuse of any inaccuracies that may be discovered. The indication of the Voters, though attempted care- fully, had better, perhaps, in the present edition have been omitted, as the Official Registers from which they are taken have never since the passing of the Reform Bill been purged of " dead," and "absent"; while at the date when consulted, this year's Electors had not been added. Prefixed to the Directory are Fifty-eight pages of County Statistics, Interest Tables, and other informa- tion valuable for reference; and Seventy pages of Advertisements are annexed.

    East Ayrshire Council East Ayrshire Local Plan Volume 1 Quality | Equality | Access | Partnership | Access | Equality | Quality 2 EAST AYRSHIRE LOCAL PLAN 2010 Foreword Since the adoption of the last East Ayrshire Local Plan in April 2003, there has been substantial developer interest in East Ayrshire, generated largely by improved communication links between Kilmarnock and the Glasgow conurbation through the recent upgrading of the A77 to motorway status. Increased developer interest has, in particular, been evidenced by a rapid take up and development of housing sites. In order to respond positively to increasing development demands, the Council has therefore made a conscious decision to prepare an early alteration to the local plan, to reflect changing circumstances and to provide an adequate supply of development land to meet anticipated demands to 2017 and beyond. In this regard, the Council has now produced the East Ayrshire Local Plan 2010 which fully reflects and respects the provisions of the new Ayrshire Joint Structure Plan. Production of both documents in tandem has ensured full co-ordination of strategic and local development planning in the area and will provide a strong, positive and proactive planning base for future development throughout East Ayrshire in the years to come. As with the adopted local plan 2003, this local plan aims to actively promote and enhance the economic, social and physical environment of East Ayrshire as a means of improving the quality of life of all residents of the area. The plan has been designed, in particular, to help achieve the aims and aspirations of the Council’s Community Plan, especially with regard to the improvement of opportunities and the environment.

David W Purdie "Never Met-and Never Parted": The Curious Case of Bums and Boswell Over two hundred years ago--in May 1791-there were published in the city of London the greatest single works of two of Scotland's literary giants­ her national poet and her greatest biographer. Two men of Ayrshire who never met, spoke or corresponded had produced, like two rapid thunderclaps, Tam 0' Shanter-A Tale, which appeared in Francis Grose's Antiquities of Scotland, followed a few weeks later by The Lift ofSamuel Johnson, LL.D. Some time ago I was asked to give a paper to the Boswell Society of Auchinleck on the subject of the physical and mental ailments of that remark­ able biographer, advocate and laird, James Boswell. It was while assembling material on the rather prosaic problems of his ingrowing toenails and skin af­ flictions, together with his more serious-and much more interesting-ma­ larial attacks, manic-depression and (nineteen) bouts of gonorrhea, that I began to notice with increasing interest, the personality traits, interests and personal friendships which he shared with his contemporary, Bums.
