• Goals from Joris Mathijsen (23) and (40) put Anderlecht on the back foot, and while Jonathan Legear scored an away goal on the stroke of half-time, David Jarolím restored Hamburg's two-goal lead after the break. Previous meetings • Before last week's first leg the clubs had faced each other three times in total, all of those games coming in the space of six months in 1977 as Hamburg and Anderlecht each recorded a victory apiece and one draw. • They first met in the 1977 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in Amsterdam, when Kuno Klötzer's Hamburg overcame Raymond Goethals' Anderlecht 2-0 to land their first major European trophy. • The teams for that game at the Olympisch Stadium on 11 May 1977 were: Hamburg: Kargus, Kaltz, Nogly, Memering, Hidien, Ripp, Steffenhagen, Keller, Reimann, Magath, Volkert. Anderlecht: Ruiter, Van Binst, Broos, Vandendaele, Thissen, Dockx (Van Poucke, 80), Van Der Elst, Haan, Ressel, Coeck, Rensenbrink. • Goethals' Anderlecht avenged that defeat in the second round of the same competition the following season, beating a Hamburg team then coached by 2-1 in Germany and drawing the return leg 1-1 in Brussels. Match background • Anderlecht have met opposition 30 times and their record reads W11 D3 L16; in Brussels, W7 D3 L4. Prior to a 2-1 second-leg win at FC Bayern München in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 16 – a tie they lost 6-2 on aggregate – they had not won in ten games against German sides. • Hamburg have six past matches against Belgian opponents in UEFA club competition, earning themselves the record W2 D2 L2; W0 D1 L1 in Belgium. They also faced KAA Gent in the 1970/71 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the non-UEFA affiliated predecessor of the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League, winning 1-0 in Belgium and 7-1 at home. • Anderlecht's six home European games this season give them the record W3 D1 L2, while Hamburg have won three and lost three of their six UEFA Europa League away games this season. Team facts • Van Nistelrooy had never faced Anderlecht prior to the first leg but has come up against Belgium in three friendly games with the , featuring in a loss and two draws. • Zé Roberto played for Bayern in both of their 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group-stage meetings with Anderlecht, a 1-0 home win and a 1-1 draw in Brussels. was an unused substitute during the match in Belgium. • David Rozehnal won the league title and a with Club Brugge KV between 2003 and 2005. • Jelle Van Damme spent part of the 2005/06 season on loan at Werder Bremen prior to joining his current employers from Southampton FC. • Jan Polák also moved to Brussels following a spell in the Bundesliga, where he represented 1. FC Nürnberg from 2005 to 2007. • Final hosts Hamburg are one of three German sides in the last 16, along with VfL Wolfsburg and Bremen. The Bundesliga boasts the most UEFA Europa League contenders at this stage. Anderlecht are one of two Belgian sides left in the competition, along with R. Standard de Liège. • The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be staged at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday 19 March. There is no country protection. Penalties • Both of Anderlecht's previous UEFA club competition penalty shoot-outs ended in defeat; 4-1 at FC Barcelona in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup and 4-3 to Tottenham Hotspur FC in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup final. • Hamburg lost their only European penalty shoot-out 4-3 on home turf to Sparta following a 2-2 aggregate draw in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup first round.

RSC Anderlecht: Ariël Jacobs Date of birth: 25 July 1953 Nationality: Belgian Playing career: Diegem Sport, Racing White, SK Halle, FC Diest Coaching career: RWD Molenbeek, RAA Louviéroise, KSC Lokeren OV, R. Excelsior Mouscron, RSC Anderlecht • Discovered as a 17-year-old at Diegem Sport, Jacobs turned professional with Racing White in 1970, but returned to his first club three years later. The striker would leave the club on two further occasions, returning after a single season. • Player-coach at Diegem by the time he hung up his boots in 1987, Jacobs worked for the Belgian Football Association from 1982 coaching youth teams, and was assistant coach of the national team – under Guy Thys – from 1986 to 1989. • Took charge at RWDM – formerly Racing White – in 1989, resigning in 2001 with his side on course for promotion to the top division. He recuperated at La Louvière, winning the 2002/03 Belgian Cup. • Left coaching for two years in 2004 to become technical director at KRC Genk before a short spell at Lokeren in 2006. Later the same season he saved Excelsior Mouscron from relegation. • Joined to become assistant coach at Anderlecht in June 2007, taking sole command that November following Frank Vercauteren's dismissal. Led the club to a first Belgian Cup in 14 years that season, and now committed to Anderlecht until summer 2012.

Hamburger SV: Bruno Labbadia Date of birth: 8 February 1966 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Darmstadt 98, Hamburger SV, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, FC Bayern München, 1. FC Köln, Werder Bremen, DSC , Karlsruher SC Coaching career: SV Darmstadt 98, SpVgg Greuther Fürth, , Hamburger SV • Born in Germany to Italian parents, Labbadia started out as a striker with hometown club Darmstadt. His finest hours were victories in the German Cup (1990) and a league title (1991) with Kaiserslautern, and a second Bundesliga crown with Bayern in 1994. • His international career consisted of two brief substitute appearances in friendlies but Labbadia earned a place in history as the first player to score more than 100 goals in each of Germany's top two divisions: 103 in the top tier, 101 in the second. • Went back to his roots to start his coaching career at Darmstadt in 2003, winning promotion to the third tier in his first season but quit after failing to go up another level in the following two campaigns. • In his only season with Greuther, 2007/08, he narrowly missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga before being hired by Leverkusen, who made a flying start to 2008/09 but tailed off in the spring, leading to Labbadia's resignation. • Hamburg, who he represented as a player in the late 1980s, took him on in summer 2009, allowing him to coach for the first time in European club competition.

The UEFA Cup evolved from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and was first contested as the UEFA Cup in 1971/72. This season the UEFA Cup has been reborn as the UEFA Europa League. The new name brings major changes to the competition, which has a new 48-team group stage with centralised marketing of broadcast rights, a presenting sponsor - Spanish car manufacturer SEAT - and an official matchball in addition to centralised sponsorship from the knockout stage and a new logo and visual identity. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, from the group stage a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season. • Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from the 2008/09 season at least eight places are reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list also continues to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. • Away goals rule: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, penalty kicks determine which team qualifies. • Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Europa League matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Europa League this season or by a club that has transferred from the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Europa League following the group stage. • Assistant referees experiment: The 144 UEFA Europa League group-stage games were overseen by six match officials, in an experiment endorsed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), with two additional assistant referees taking up positions alongside each goal. The additional assistant referees provided two extra pairs of eyes to monitor the game, informing the referee of incidents that he may otherwise have missed. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
