Ecosystems are among the most important and most vulnerable of the Earth’s resources, as they are criti- cal for sustaining life on the planet. The benefits that living organisms derive from ecosystems are most- ly related to energy, carbon, and water cycling, but such other elements as nitrogen and phosphorus are also of great importance. Global climate change will unquestionably affect the major cycles comprising the ways in which energy and chemicals flow through plants, herbivores, micro-organisms, and other liv- ing organisms. Depending upon ecosystems’ sensitivity to the manifestations of global climate change, these impacts can be either slowed or accelerated. Ecosystems are complex systems which are difficult to model, and our ability to predict responses to global climate change is limited. Therefore, a complex study of ecosystems that combines long-term monitoring, climate manipulation experiments, and modelling is essential to mitigating, minimizing, and ameliorating the effects of global climate change on ecosystems. In this book, we present our current knowledge of climate change scenarios at global and regional scales (chapters 1–3), their potential impacts on terrestrial, and in particular forest, grassland, and agricultural, ecosystems as well as advanced experimental approaches to investigating these impacts (chapters 4, 5, and 17). In particular, we present the results of monitoring studies and manipulation experiments docu- menting the effects of light (chapters 4, 6, and 9), elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (chapters 7 and 8), drought (chapters 10 and 11), temperature (Chapter 12), ozone (Chapter 13), and acidity (Chapter 14) on the physiology, growth, and health status of plants and ecosystems. The final chapters of the book then deal with the impacts of climate change on biodiversity (chapters 15 and 16) and land-use changes (chap- ters 17 and 18), including changes in ecosystem services provided by ecosystems (Chapter 18). The book’s chapters thus cover areas of atmospheric, environmental, and social sciences. We believe this book will be valuable to all those studying climatology, plant physiology, agriculture, forestry, ecology, and other related disciplines particularly from the perspective of ongoing global climate change. INTRODUCTION In the past, Earth’s climate underwent large climatic changes as a result of only natural factors. During the past several hundred thousand years, climate variability was driven largely by changes in orbital forc- ing, which resulted in long periods of colder climate, or ice ages, interrupted by shorter periods of warmer climate, or interglacials. This regular pattern, wherein interglacials were repeating each ca 120,000 years, was explained by the Milankovitch theory of orbital cycles (Milankovitch 1941). Other natural factors which can substantially alter the energy balance of the global atmosphere over shorter periods of time in- clude volcanic eruptions (producing aerosols), changes in solar activity, and cosmic rays. The onset of the last interglacial period, known as the Holocene, about 11,000 years ago, during which time global temperature oscillated by not more than 1°C (Marcott et al. 2013), enabled humans to estab- lish agriculture and their first highly organized civilizations. At the beginning of Industrial Revolution, however, which is defined mainly by an exponential rise in human population, energy consumption, and mineral and other resource use, the world entered what many scientists call today the Anthropocene (Crutzen 2002). The use of fossil fuels over the last ca 250 years has led to a rapid increase in atmospheric –1 –1 CO2 concentration ([CO2]) from about 280 µmol mol in 1850 to more than 400 µmol mol today. In the past, CO2 as a greenhouse gas acted as a feedback during climatic oscillations and enhanced both warming and cooling of the atmosphere (Scheffer et al. 2002). Consequently, rising [CO2] together with concentra- tions of such other greenhouse gases as CH4 and N2O are now dominant drivers of global warming, which is manifested as global climate change (GCC) (IPCC 2013). [CO2] was last as high as it is currently 15 to 10 million years ago (Tripati et al. 2009), and it is widely recognized that ongoing and expected unmitigated GCC will bring significant and often disruptive and irreversible impacts to natural ecosystems as well as human-made socio-economic systems (IPCC 2014a). 8 Fig. 1. Furthermore, this effect may be enhanced by involvement of sex chromosomes that are known to undergo fast evolution compared to autosomes and play a special role in speciation due to their engagement in postzygotic reproductive isolation. The work presented in this study uses various molecular- genetic and cytogenetic techniques to describe karyotype and sex chromosome evolution of two groups of Lepidoptera, namely selected representatives of the family Tortricidae and Leptidea wood white butterflies of the family Pieridae. The acquired knowledge points to unexpected evolutionary dynamics of lepidopteran karyotypes including the presence of derived neo-sex chromosome systems that originated as a result of chromosomal rearrangements. We discuss the significance of these findings for radiation and subsequent speciation of both lepidopteran groups. Many new species, even within well-investigated species groups, have been discovered based initially on differences in DNA barcodes. We barcoded 437 collection Published specimens belonging to 40 pre-identified Palearctic species of the Elachista bifasciella group of moths 9 October 2013 (Lepidoptera, Elachistidae). Although the study group has been a subject of several careful morphological taxonomic examinations, an unexpectedly high number of previously undetected putative species is revealed, resulting in a 34% rise in species number in the study area. The validity of putative new species was subsequently supported with diagnostic morphological traits. Entomofaunistik, Wien, download unter www.zobodat.at Beiträge zur Entomofaunistik 15: 1 –7 Wien, Dezember 2014 Die Gracillariinae und Phyllocnistinae (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) des Bundeslandes Salzburg, Österreich Michael KURZ* & Gernot EMBACHER** Abstract The Gracillariinae and Phyllocnistinae (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) of the federal state of Salzburg, Austria. – The revision of all specimens housed in the collection “Haus der Natur” and in several private collections, as well as available literature records of the family Gracillari- idae (excluding Lithocolletinae) of the federal territority of Salzburg revealed 33 species, 29 of which belong to Gracillariinae and four to Phyllocnistinae. Four species recorded by EMBACHER & al. (2011b) and also by HUEMER (2013) had to be eliminated from the catalogue because the speci- mens were misidentified or the records could not be verified. Two species are new for the fauna: Caloptilia populetorum (ZELLER, 1839) and Caloptilia fidella (REUTTI, 1853). Na druhé stran však dochází sou asn k jejímu ochuzování v souvislosti s rozvojem lidské spole nosti. Z pohledu ochrany p írody se proto horské ekosystémy adí mezi jedno z nejcenn jších a nejohrožen jších prost edí v globálním m ítku. V rámci p edložené doktorské práce byly studovány vybrané potenciáln významné antropické vlivy na biodiverzitu horských bezlesí Hrubého Jeseníku prost ednictvím modelové bioindika ní skupiny brouk (Coleoptera). V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk .

Jahrgang n Seiten 443–454 n Klagenfurt 2014 443 Rhigognostis scharnikensis sp. n., eine morphologisch und genetisch differenzierte neue Schmetterlingsart aus den Hohen Tauern (Lepidoptera, Plutellidae) Von Peter HUEMER, Christian WIESER & Marko MUTANEN Zusammenfassung Rhigognostis scharnikensis Huemer & Wieser, sp. n. wird aus der Kreuzeck­ gruppe (Irschen, Hohe Tauern, Kärnten) beschrieben und sowohl Falter als auch Genitalstrukturen beider Geschlechter werden abgebildet. Die neue Art steht genitalmorphologisch und im DNA Barcode R. senilella (Zetterstedt, 1839) am nächs­ ten, weist aber eine Reihe von diagnostischen morphologischen Merkmalen auf und eine genetische Distanz von 5,78 % zum nächsten Nachbarn. Als weitere ähnliche Art wird R. annulatella (Curtis, 1832) abgebildet und verglichen. Weiteres wird R. schmaltzella (Zetterstedt, 1839) erstmals für Italien gemeldet. Abstract Rhigognostis scharnikensis Huemer & Wieser, sp. n. is described from the Kreuzeck­group (Irschen, Hohe Tauern, Carinthia, Austria) and adult and genital structures of both sexes are figured. The new species is most similar to R. senilella (Zetterstedt, 1839) in the genitalia and in the DNA barcode. However, it differs in seve­ ral diagnostic morphological characters and in a barcode divergence of 5.78% to the nearest neighbour. As a further similar species R. annulatella (Curtis, 1832) is figured and compared. Moreover, R. schmaltzella (Zetterstedt, 1839) is firstly recorded for Italy. E i n l e i t u n g Die Schmetterlingsfauna Kärntens im Allgemeinen und jene der Ho- hen Tauern im Besonderen gelten durch intensive Bestrebungen der letz- ten 20 Jahre inzwischen als relativ gut erfasst (HUEMER & WIESER 2008, WIESER 2008).
