Director's Message

Distance learning is a pretty workable option for people of all ages desirous of getting education. It is relatively flexible than conventional styles of education. Students can complete their assignments whenever free instead of being restricted to an inflexible timetable. It allows the students to work according to their own schedules and circumstances. Requirements for joining a program of study are not rigorous and there is no need to travel to and from the classes daily. It provides opportunity of contact with tutors through tutorials, email or by landline or cell phones. At Gomal University, Distance learning is all about on and off campus activities, convenience and flexibility. Our aim is to remain at the forefronts to facilitate our learners. Join us and earn a degree of your choice without disrupting your career or other life pursuits.

Distance Education Program Distance education, also called distance learning, is a combination of on-campus & off-campus activities, and a method of offering education either through correspondence or other means of modern technology. Distance education focuses on delivering quality education for students who are not physically present. It enables students to receive education from far flung remote areas. Started in 1946, the University of South Africa is one of the oldest distance education universities. The origin of distance education can be traced back to the 19th (1840) when Sir Issac Pitman, the inventor of shorthand, came up with an idea of offering courses through mail. In the 1900s, a department for correspondence courses was started at the University of Chicago. In the later years, a number of universities also started such departments. Until 1969, distance education remained an important means of education in only a few countries. In 1969, the establishment of the United Kingdom's Open University brought about a significant change in the field of distance education. In modern distance education, educational materials are given to the students through various means such as tutorials, audiotapes, videos, satellite broadcasts and CD-ROMs. Remote databases, e-mail, and video conferencing using broadband network are also used. Interactive videoconferencing helps a teacher deliver lectures to different groups in other classrooms, known as a virtual classroom. The various facilities and services available through the network include online registration, availability of online video materials, dissemination of course materials and constant communication with tutors, instructors and fellow students through e-mail

“Distance education has opened the gates of “Learning Anytime and Anywhere”.

Establishment of Directorate for Distance Education by HEC

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) decided to establish a separate Directorate for Distance Education at six selected universities, to speed up the effort to make distance learning a success in Pakistan

1: University of the Punjab, Lahore. 2: University of Peshawar, Peshawar. 3: University of Karachi , Karachi. 4: University of Sindh, Jamshoro. 5: Gomal University, D.I.Khan. 6: Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan.

The decision was taken keeping in view the large number of students appearing annually in graduate and postgraduate examinations in arts subjects as private candidates, in public sector universities.

Out of these private candidates, a large majority of students fail to qualify the examination consequently there is a massive increase in the dropout ratio at graduate and undergraduate level, incurring a big loss of money, time and hope for the candidates as well as society.

Realizing this inopportune situation, the Higher Education Commission has taken up the issue with the stakeholders organized meetings with experts on Distance Education, and finally has come up with the conclusion that concrete measures must be taken to make distance learning a success in the country, for the provision of quality higher education.

It has been decided that private students will be recognized and dealt as Distant Student and quality will be equally important for distance education to serve a significant number of students in the country.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

The postgraduate program of Commerce was initially started in the former University College of Commerce in September1982; afterward in 1983 the classes were shifted to Department of Business Administration and the Department was renamed as Commerce and Business Administration Department (CBA). The Department was running under the Administrative control of CBA up to April 2006, but due to creation of so many programs, it was necessitated to establish a full fledged Department of Commerce apart from the CBA So the Department of Commerce was established on April 27, 2006. The Department of Commerce is striving to provide a frame work within which all students are enabled to devote their academic, moral, physical and professional potentials. The Department aims to promote the highest standards of academic excellence in teaching and learning while taking into consideration not only the educational needs but also to meet the cultural, potential, social and economic needs of the society.

In the Modern complex world especially in the era of information technology and internet, changes take place rapidly due to emergence of new techniques and developments in Commerce, banking, information technology and industrial sectors. These developments have resulted in the change of recruitment policies of employers against various managerial positions. Now they tend to employ those graduates who possess the required skills and are equipped with the latest tools and techniques to tackle different business situations. Thus to meet those challenges and to cater the needs of modern industry, information technology and global business the Department is presently offering M.Com and B.Com(Hons) program to regular students and M.A Accounting & Finance to Distance Students.
