September 2017 Chanticleer The Chanticleer Monthly Newsletter of Barony Beyond the Mountain September, 2017 AS52 The History of Our Barony In this (hopefully) first in a series of articles about the history of the Barony, Lady Evaine ferch Brangwen interviews our founding Baron, Balin the Fairhaired. Balin showing mail at The Cloisters. Sometime in the 1970s. Dale Plummer/Balin the Fairhaired, founding baron of the Barony Beyond the Mountain, and his wife Sharon/Morgana Eressea di Sanpere, joined the SCA with Dale's brother, John Plummer/Mitchell Gray Cloak, in Seattle in 1970. John Plummer learned about the SCA through the writings of a favorite author, Poul Anderson, then a member of the SCA in California. John, Dale and Sharon discovered what would later become the Barony of Madrone in Seattle and joined. Events were held in the arboretum at the University of Washington, where they both were students. Balin started to fight, wearing an 18-gauge propane tank helmet. “The blows were taps compared to what you see today,” Balin said. “It was a lot of fun.” When he graduated in 1971, Balin and Morgana moved back to his hometown, Woodbury, CT in 1971. Richard was best known for creating expert replica medieval coins of both pewter and silver, and later became a member of the Order of the Laurel. Balin served as both baron and seneschal for a time before Richard took the position. Dale Plummer went to graduate school at the University of Connecticut in Storrs in 1972-73 for medieval studies. Rosemaling will be taught in the morning all 4 days and has 6 spaces open. Dancing will be taught after dinner all 4 nights and there is room for 15 more students. Carving has 1 person signed up. Music will be taught each afternoon. Cooking will be led by 2 instructors and will involve cooking Norwegian food for the camp attendees. The Literature class will meet in the afternoon all 4 days. The book selections that need to be read ahead were listed in the Cultural News in December. I will also post those on the District Six website. Viking Apron will be taught all day on Thursday and Friday. There are 6 spaces open. Viking Apron students will need to bring their own sewing machine and a basic sewing kit.

    © Lonely Planet Publications 137 Southern Zealand Towns in this nontouristy region are primarily modern, and most people shoot through them on their way to the southern beaches or to Jutland. However, there are nuggets of gold to be panned from the gravel. Køge is the prettiest town in the area, a delightfully preserved cobbledy place, with a medieval church and half-timbered houses straight from the lid of a chocolate box. Nearby is the adorable hamlet of Vallø, with a fairy-tale moated castle complete with frogs on lily pads. The third historical settlement worth your time is Sorø, again rich in history and tilted wooden homes. Viking fans have a gem in the remains of 1000-year-old Trelleborg, the best-preserved ring fortress in Scandinavia. It’s an evocative site, deep in Denmark’s rural heart and pretty much unencumbered by modern buildings and roads – squint, and you can almost believe SOUTHERN ZEALAND yourself back in Harald Bluetooth’s time. If you have kids, then Næstved is a must. Within a radius of 10km you’ll find the theme park BonBon-Land; FantasyLand, an indoor playground for younger kids; Holmegaard Glassworks, where your young ‘uns can engrave their names on glass or blow their own masterpiece; Næstved Zoo; and child-friendly beaches at Karrebæksminde. The triangular region between Næstved in the south and Sorø and Korsør to the north is spotted with forests, small lakes and streams, as close to undomesticated nature as you’ll find in Zealand. Hire a canoe in Næstved and explore the waterways at your leisure.

Guilmartin, Advisor; Stephen Dale; Jennifer Siegel Copyright by Andrew de la Garza 2010 Abstract This doctoral dissertation, Mughals at War: Babur, Akbar and the Indian Military Revolution, examines the transformation of warfare in South Asia during the foundation and consolidation of the Mughal Empire. It emphasizes the practical specifics of how the Imperial army waged war and prepared for war—technology, tactics, operations, training and logistics. These are topics poorly covered in the existing Mughal historiography, which primarily addresses military affairs through their background and context— cultural, political and economic. I argue that events in India during this period in many ways paralleled the early stages of the ongoing “Military Revolution” in early modern Europe. The shoebox-sized castle was once a royal summer residence. Today, it showcases heritage collections as well as the Danish Crown Jewels. The King’s Garden next to the castle is a peaceful oasis where you will find a statue of storyteller Hans Christian Andersen. Tivoli Gardens One of the world’s oldest and most magical amusement parks with flower gardens, rides and restaurants. The gardens are open during four annual seasons – Summer, Halloween, Christmas and Winter. Each season is unique. Tivoli Gardens is located in the heart of the city. Blue Planet Aquarium One of Europe’s biggest aquariums, the wave-shaped National Aquarium of Denmark is located by Copenhagen’s 5km sandy beach.     "Historians believe distinctive geometric fortresses may have been built by Sweyn Forkbeard as a military training camp from which to launch his invasion of England. Archaeologists in Denmark have discovered a distinctive ring-shaped Viking fortress which historians believe may have been used to launch an invasion of England. The fortress found on the Danish island of Zealand, around 30 miles south of Copenhagen, is the fifth circular fortress to be unearthed, and the first in over 60 years. ?This is great news,? said Lasse Sonne, a Viking historian from the Saxo Institute at the University of Copenhagen. ?Although there were Vikings in other countries, these circular fortresses are unique to Denmark. Many have given up hope that there were many of them left.? Like previously discovered ring fortresses, the Vallø Borgring is thought to date back to the late tenth century and the reign of Harald Bluetooth, the king who Christianised Denmark and Norway. However, some historians contend the fortresses were constructed by his son Sweyn Forkbeard, the first Danish King of England, as a military training camp or barracks from which to launch his invasions of England. Sweyn Forkbeard seized London in 1013 and was declared King of England on Christmas Day of that year. The newly discovered fortress has a diameter of 475 feet, making it the third-largest of its type, and consists of a 35-foot wide circular rampart surrounded by a palisade of wooden spikes. Although only small portions of the new fortress have been uncovered, it appears to match the design of Denmark?s other ring fortresses, sticking to a strict geometric pattern.
