The Chanticleer Monthly Newsletter of Barony Beyond the Mountain September, 2017 AS52 The History of Our Barony In this (hopefully) first in a series of articles about the history of the Barony, Lady Evaine ferch Brangwen interviews our founding Baron, Balin the Fairhaired. Balin showing mail at The Cloisters. Sometime in the 1970s. Dale Plummer/Balin the Fairhaired, founding baron of the Barony Beyond the Mountain, and his wife Sharon/Morgana Eressea di Sanpere, joined the SCA with Dale's brother, John Plummer/Mitchell Gray Cloak, in Seattle in 1970. John Plummer learned about the SCA through the writings of a favorite author, Poul Anderson, then a member of the SCA in California. John, Dale and Sharon discovered what would later become the Barony of Madrone in Seattle and joined. Events were held in the arboretum at the University of Washington, where they both were students. Balin started to fight, wearing an 18-gauge propane tank helmet. “The blows were taps compared to what you see today,” Balin said. “It was a lot of fun.” When he graduated in 1971, Balin and Morgana moved back to his hometown, Woodbury, CT in 1971. They contacted the SCA to find the local group and quickly learned there wasn't one. “I was told there was a man in Meriden who wanted to start a group, but he didn't do anything,” Balin recalled. “So we decided to do it.” Continued on page 5 Baronial Officers: Baron & Baroness - Baron Dorigen of Lewes, [email protected], and Mistress Eloise of Coulter, [email protected] Seneschal – Marcus Allectius Felix, [email protected] Deputy – Mistress Elizabeth Vynehorn, [email protected] & Lady Leandra deLeon, [email protected] Chatelaine – Lady Gwenllian ferch Llewellyn, [email protected] Deputy – Sybill Teller, [email protected] Chronicler – Lady Johanna de Glastingburi, [email protected] Company Captain of Archers – Rumhann MacDuibhsithe an Bhlog Seolta, [email protected] Exchequer – Lady Ciara McRobbie, [email protected] Deputy - Lord Gwilym of Fflint, [email protected] Herald – Mistress Camma an Daraich, [email protected] Knight Marshall – Lord Angus Gove MacKinnon, [email protected] Marshal of Fence – Lord Grimolfr Skulason, [email protected] Marshal of Thrown Weapons – Vacant Mistress of Arts & Science – Lady Alys du Bois, [email protected] Minister of the List – Lord Mark of the Red Hand, [email protected] Web Minister – Lady Sisuile Butler, [email protected] Youth Marshal - Vacant Combat Arts Fencing NOTE: Practices are subject to change without Sundays, 1-3 pm – 29 Florida Road, East notice.
